Chapter 10 - The Truth Behind the Name“Rebecca?”

Maya could barely recognize her own voice.

The woman standing at the end of the hall looked exactly like the woman in the photograph, only older.

She held a clear plastic folder against her chest.

Behind her, two police officers entered the house.

Victor stared at them.

Then at Rebecca.

“You.”

Rebecca looked at him without fear.

“Yes.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“You were supposed to be gone.”

Rebecca took another step forward.

“So was Elena.”

The words silenced everyone.

Maya looked at her mother.

Elena was crying.

Marcus stood completely still.

Ethan looked as though the past fifteen years had suddenly collided with the present.

Rebecca raised the folder.

“I've been waiting a long time to bring this back.”

Victor stepped toward her.

“Put that down.”

One of the officers immediately moved between them.

“Sir, step back.”

Victor glared at him.

“You have no idea what you're involved in.”

The officer didn't move.

“I know enough.”

Rebecca looked at Maya.

“Your name is Maya Elena Carter.”

Maya held the photograph tighter.

“I know.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

She opened the folder.

“You know the name.”

She pulled out the second birth certificate.

“You don't know the truth.”

Maya looked at it.

The name was hers.

Maya Elena Carter.

Mother: Elena Carter.

Father: Ethan Carter.

It looked identical to the certificate she'd already seen.

Maya frowned.

“What’s different?”

Rebecca turned the paper around.

“Look at the registration number.”

Maya stared.

The number was different.

“So?”

Rebecca pointed to the date.

“Your certificate was registered six months after you were born.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

“Because the first one was destroyed.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Destroyed by whom?”

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Your father.”

Daniel didn't argue.

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because the first certificate named someone I couldn't allow anyone to find.”

Maya looked between them.

“Who?”

Rebecca took another document from the folder.

A hospital record.

Her voice shook.

“Your mother gave birth to twins.”

Maya stopped breathing.

Elena covered her face.

Marcus whispered, “Twins?”

Rebecca nodded.

“One baby was Maya.”

She turned the page.

“The second baby was a girl named Lily.”

Maya stared.

“Where is she?”

Nobody answered.

Rebecca looked toward Victor.

“She disappeared the same night Elena did.”

Maya's blood ran cold.

“Victor?”

Victor smiled.

“You are finally putting the pieces together.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Maya.

“The second baby wasn't taken.”

Maya frowned.

“Then where is she?”

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

“She was given to me.”

The room went silent.

Maya stared at her.

“What?”

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Ethan and I were married before you were born.”

Ethan looked down.

“Our marriage was already falling apart when I found out Elena was pregnant.”

Maya looked at him.

“And you knew?”

“Yes.”

“About the twins?”

Ethan nodded.

“I knew they existed.”

Marcus looked at him.

“But you disappeared.”

“I was forced to.”

Victor laughed.

“You were hiding from Daniel.”

Ethan turned.

“I was hiding from you.”

Victor's smile faded.

Rebecca continued.

“Daniel wanted one child to inherit the estate and the other to become leverage.”

Maya’s stomach twisted.

“So he took Lily?”

“No,” Daniel said.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s eyes were full of shame.

“I gave Lily to Rebecca.”

Maya stared.

“Why?”

“Because Victor was searching for both babies.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Daniel told me if I took Lily and disappeared, Victor would stop looking for Elena and Maya.”

Maya’s mouth fell open.

“You raised my sister?”

Rebecca nodded.

“From the day she was born.”

“Where is she?”

Rebecca looked at the officers.

One of them stepped aside.

A young woman stood behind them.

Maya froze.

She had dark hair.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same small scar above her left eyebrow.

Maya looked at Elena.

Then Ethan.

Then the stranger.

The young woman whispered:

“Maya?”

Maya couldn't move.

Elena sobbed.

“My girls.”

The young woman stepped forward.

“My name is Lily.”

Maya stared at her.

“No.”

Lily smiled through tears.

“I've been told about you my whole life.”

Maya felt the room spinning.

“You knew about me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you find me?”

“Because Mom said it wasn't safe.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“I was terrified.”

Maya walked toward Lily.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if one sudden movement might make her disappear.

“Are you really my sister?”

Lily nodded.

Maya laughed through tears.

“That's impossible.”

Lily reached out.

Maya looked at her hand.

Then took it.

The touch was strangely familiar.

Like meeting someone she had somehow known her entire life.

Maya began crying.

Lily hugged her.

For fifteen years, Maya had believed she had lost her mother.

She had never imagined she had lost a sister too.

Across the room, Victor watched them.

His expression had changed.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

One of the officers stepped toward him.

“Victor Hale, you're under arrest.”

Victor stared at Daniel.

“You told them.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Victor looked at Elena.

“You did.”

Elena held Maya's hand.

“Yes.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You think this ends here?”

Elena looked at him.

“It ends with the truth.”

The officer took Victor’s arms.

He resisted only once.

“Daniel!”

Daniel didn't look at him.

Victor was led downstairs.

The house became strangely quiet.

Tara stood alone near the wall.

Maya looked at her.

Tara lowered her eyes.

“You hate me.”

Maya shook her head.

“I don't know what I feel.”

“That’s fair.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You made me think I wasn't wanted.”

Tara wiped her face.

“I thought if you hated me, you would stay away from the danger.”

“You could have trusted me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was Mom.”

Tara nodded.

“I know.”

Maya looked at her for a long moment.

Then asked:

“Did you take the fifty dollars?”

Tara blinked.

“What?”

“The money.”

Tara shook her head.

“No.”

Maya looked toward the purse.

“Then where did it go?”

A police officer searched the bag again.

He opened the smallest zippered compartment.

A folded bill slipped out.

Fifty dollars.

Maya stared.

Tara looked stunned.

“I didn't put that there.”

Daniel turned pale.

“I did.”

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus frowned.

“Why?”

Daniel sighed.

“Because I needed Tara to make everyone search the room.”

Maya's eyes narrowed.

“You planted the money?”

“Yes.”

“To make me look guilty?”

“No.”

“To find the envelope.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Maya stared.

“So even the accusation was part of your plan.”

“I needed the documents discovered before Victor reached them.”

Maya shook her head.

“You used me.”

Daniel’s expression broke.

“Yes.”

Marcus stepped toward him.

“That doesn't make it right.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“But it got the truth out before it was too late.”

Maya said nothing.

Then she looked at Tara.

“I’m sorry I thought you hated me.”

Tara began crying.

“I understand.”

Maya hugged her.

Tara froze.

Then slowly wrapped her arms around Maya.

Marcus watched them.

His eyes filled.

Ethan stood nearby.

Maya released Tara.

Then turned toward him.

“You.”

Ethan swallowed.

“What?”

“You’re my biological father.”

“Yes.”

“But Marcus raised me.”

“Yes.”

Maya walked toward Marcus.

He opened his arms.

She hugged him tightly.

“You're my dad,” she whispered.

Marcus held her.

“Always.”

Ethan watched them.

Maya eventually turned toward him.

“You don't have to disappear again.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I won't.”

The sun was beginning to rise outside.

Morning light spilled across the broken windows and the hallway floor.

Elena stood near the front door.

Maya looked at her.

“You're coming home?”

Elena smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

Maya hesitated.

“Really?”

Elena opened her arms.

Maya ran to her.

The embrace was awkward at first.

Fifteen years had changed them both.

But then Elena pressed her cheek against Maya’s hair.

And Maya finally let herself cry.

“I waited for you,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“You should have come back.”

“I know.”

“I was angry.”

“You had every right.”

Maya pulled back.

“Are you staying this time?”

Elena smiled.

“This time, nothing is taking me away.”

Behind them, police officers carried boxes of documents from the house.

Daniel sat quietly on the staircase.

Tara stood beside Marcus.

Ethan talked softly with Rebecca and Lily.

The family that had been scattered by fifteen years of lies was finally standing in the same room.

Not healed.

Not yet.

But together.

Maya looked toward the attic staircase.

She thought about the fifty-dollar accusation.

The black purse.

The envelope.

The hidden room.

The key.

Every lie had been designed to hide one truth.

Her mother hadn't abandoned her.

Her stepmother hadn't hated her.

Her father hadn't betrayed her.

And the man who had claimed to protect the family had nearly destroyed it.

Maya looked at Lily.

Her sister smiled.

For the first time in fifteen years, Maya didn't feel like a guest in her own home.

She felt like she had finally found it.

Her phone buzzed.

Maya looked down.

One unknown number.

One message.

Your mother told you the truth about fifteen years ago.

Maya's smile disappeared.

A second message appeared.

She never told you what happened to the other twin.

Maya slowly looked at Lily.

Then at Elena.

Elena saw the expression on her daughter's face.

“What is it?”

Maya turned the screen toward her.

Elena read the message.

Her face drained of color.

May you like

She whispered only four words.

“There was another baby.”
