Chapter 5 - The Man in the ShadowsThe footsteps stopped on the first stair.

Nobody moved.
Maya could hear Ethan breathing beside her. His hand tightened around the black notebook, his knuckles turning white.
Marcus stood at the top of the staircase.
“Show yourself,” he said.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man stepped into the dim light.
He was tall, dressed in a dark coat, with silver at his temples. He looked calm.
Too calm.
His eyes moved slowly across the room.
First Marcus.
Then Tara.
Then Maya.
Finally, Ethan.
“Well,” he said quietly. “This is an unpleasant family reunion.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled.
“You know exactly who I am.”
“I don’t.”
The man reached into his coat.
Ethan immediately moved in front of Maya.
“Don’t.”
The man stopped.
“I’m not carrying a weapon.”
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Who is he?”
Ethan’s eyes never left the stranger.
“Victor Hale.”
Marcus went still.
Maya frowned.
“Who?”
Victor smiled at her.
“Your father never told you about me?”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“What do you want?”
Victor looked at the notebook in Ethan’s hand.
“That.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Victor held out one hand.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“You know what happens if you keep it.”
“I know what happens if I give it to you.”
Tara stepped forward.
“Ethan.”
He looked at her.
“Stay out of this.”
“You promised me.”
“I promised to keep you alive.”
Tara’s voice cracked.
“And Maya?”
Ethan looked at Maya.
“She deserves the truth.”
Victor sighed.
“That is the problem with truth. People think they want it until they discover what it costs.”
Maya stepped around Ethan.
“What did you do to my mother?”
Victor looked at her.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
“You have her voice.”
Maya stared.
“Answer me.”
Victor smiled faintly.
“Your mother was very brave.”
Marcus moved closer.
“Don’t talk about her.”
“She trusted the wrong people.”
“Who?”
Victor looked directly at Tara.
“Tara.”
Tara recoiled.
Victor continued.
“She trusted Tara.”
Maya turned toward her stepmother.
“You told me my mother trusted you.”
“She did.”
Victor nodded.
“She trusted you with everything.”
Tara’s eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t know what happened.”
“I know exactly what happened.”
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Then start talking.”
Tara shook her head.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From Victor?”
“From everyone.”
Marcus gave a harsh laugh.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Victor looked amused.
“You always were difficult to convince.”
Marcus turned toward him.
“You know me?”
“Your father hired me.”
Maya felt a chill.
“My grandfather?”
Victor nodded.
“Your grandfather, Daniel.”
Marcus stared.
“For what?”
Victor slipped his hands into his pockets.
“To clean up problems.”
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“That’s what you called it.”
Victor looked at him.
“And you were one of those problems.”
Maya looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“My father discovered that money was being moved from several company accounts.”
Marcus frowned.
“I remember the audit.”
“You remember the audit?” Ethan asked.
“I was told it was an accounting mistake.”
“It wasn’t.”
Victor smiled.
“Your father knew.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“He knew money was disappearing.”
“Why would he allow it?”
“Because he was receiving a percentage.”
Marcus’s face went pale.
“You’re lying.”
Victor shrugged.
“You can believe whatever helps you sleep.”
Maya looked at Ethan.
“Did Grandpa steal?”
Ethan shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“He let other people steal.”
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Who?”
Ethan looked at Victor.
“Victor.”
Victor gave a small nod.
“And others.”
Maya felt sick.
“What did my mother find?”
Victor answered.
“Everything.”
Tara whispered, “Stop.”
Victor ignored her.
“She found payments, shell companies, fake invoices, property transfers.”
Maya’s eyes moved to the documents on the floor.
“The house.”
“Yes.”
“Why was someone trying to transfer this house?”
Victor looked at Marcus.
“Because your father’s estate was worth much more than you realized.”
Marcus stared at him.
“How much?”
Victor smiled.
“Enough to kill over.”
Maya felt her stomach drop.
“Did you kill my mother?”
Victor didn’t answer.
Maya stepped toward him.
“Did you?”
Tara grabbed Maya’s arm.
“Don’t.”
Maya pulled free.
“You know.”
“I know what I was told.”
“What were you told?”
Tara’s eyes filled.
“That she was going to leave.”
“Because she wanted to?”
“No.”
Maya’s voice broke.
“Then why?”
Tara looked toward Victor.
“He told me she had to disappear.”
Marcus turned sharply.
“You said nobody knew what happened to Elena.”
“I lied.”
Marcus stared at her.
“For how long?”
Tara looked down.
“Fifteen years.”
The words landed like a gunshot.
Maya took a step backward.
Fifteen years.
Her entire life after her mother’s disappearance had been built around one lie.
She looked at Marcus.
“You knew she didn’t leave.”
Marcus shook his head quickly.
“No.”
“But Tara did.”
“Yes.”
“And you never knew?”
“I swear I didn’t.”
Victor gave a quiet laugh.
“Your wife was very convincing.”
Marcus turned toward Tara.
“Why?”
Tara began crying.
“Because I was scared.”
“Of him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew everything.”
Victor interrupted.
“I still do.”
Tara closed her eyes.
Maya noticed something on Victor’s right hand.
A ring.
A narrow black band with a small silver line through the center.
Her mother had a photograph from years ago.
A man standing beside Elena wore the same ring.
Maya pointed.
“That ring.”
Victor looked at her hand.
“What about it?”
“I’ve seen it.”
“Where?”
“In my mother’s photograph.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Maya walked to the dresser and picked up the photograph.
She held it toward him.
“You were there.”
Victor stared at the picture.
Then at Maya.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night your mother was taken.”
Marcus grabbed his brother’s arm.
“What happened that night?”
Ethan pulled away.
“I wasn't there when they took her.”
“You said you helped her escape.”
“I did.”
“What happened?”
Ethan looked at Maya.
“She called me.”
“When?”
“Just before midnight.”
Maya held her breath.
“What did she say?”
“She said someone had found her.”
“Who?”
“She didn’t know.”
Victor laughed softly.
“She knew.”
Everyone looked at him.
Victor continued.
“She knew exactly who.”
Marcus stepped toward him.
“Tell me.”
Victor met his eyes.
“Your brother.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“That’s a lie.”
Victor smiled.
“Is it?”
Maya felt confused.
“What are you saying?”
Victor pointed at Ethan.
“Ask him where he was the night your mother vanished.”
Maya looked at Ethan.
Ethan said nothing.
Marcus turned toward his brother.
“Where were you?”
Ethan swallowed.
“I was supposed to meet Elena.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was followed.”
“By whom?”
“I don’t know.”
Victor laughed again.
“You always blame the shadows, Ethan.”
Ethan moved suddenly.
He crossed the room and shoved Victor against the wall.
“Say one more word about her.”
Victor didn’t resist.
“Still emotional.”
Marcus pulled Ethan back.
“Enough!”
Ethan stepped away.
Maya was staring at him.
“You lied.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I didn’t tell you everything.”
“You said you helped my mother.”
“I did.”
“You said you didn’t know what happened to her.”
“I didn’t know all of it.”
“Then what aren’t you telling me?”
Ethan looked toward Tara.
Then Victor.
Then Maya.
Finally, he opened the black notebook.
“There was one thing Elena told me before we lost contact.”
“What?”
“She said if anything happened to her, I should find her daughter.”
Maya's voice was almost a whisper.
“Why?”
Ethan turned to the final page.
There was a message written in faded blue ink.
Trust no one in this house.
Maya stared.
Marcus reached for the notebook.
But Ethan pulled it away.
“There’s more.”
He turned the page.
A second message had been written underneath.
Especially the person who says she came to protect you.
Maya slowly looked at Tara.
Tara began shaking her head.
“No.”
Maya’s eyes narrowed.
“You said you were protecting me.”
“I was.”
“Then why did my mother warn me about someone like you?”
Tara backed toward the wall.
“I didn’t know she wrote that.”
Victor smiled.
Maya looked at him.
“You seem very sure about everything.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Because I know what happened.”
“Then tell me.”
He stared at her.
“Your mother wasn't taken because of money.”
Marcus frowned.
“Then why?”
Victor looked directly at Maya.
“Because she discovered who Maya’s real father was.”
The room fell silent.
Maya stopped breathing.
Marcus stared at Victor.
“That’s impossible.”
Victor’s eyes remained on Maya.
“Is it?”
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Dad?”
Marcus couldn’t speak.
Tara covered her mouth.
And Ethan slowly lowered the notebook.
Because everyone in the room had just realized the same thing.
The truth about Maya’s father was not hidden in the attic.
May you like
It was hidden in the one place nobody had searched.
Tara’s locked black purse.
