Chapter 9 - The Father She Never KnewThe hidden door burst inward.

Dust exploded through the room.

Maya stumbled backward as a man forced his way through the opening.

Victor.

He looked almost amused.

“You should have opened the door.”

Ethan moved between him and Maya.

“Stay back.”

Victor glanced at the key in Maya’s hand.

“There it is.”

Maya closed her fingers around it.

Elena grabbed her wrist.

“Run.”

Victor laughed.

“There’s nowhere to run.”

Behind him, two men appeared in the passage.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You’re not taking my daughter.”

Victor looked at him.

“Your daughter?”

A cold smile crossed his face.

“That’s still what you call her?”

Marcus’s fists tightened.

Victor continued.

“How long did you plan to keep pretending?”

Maya looked at Marcus.

“Pretending what?”

Marcus went silent.

Victor shook his head.

“Even now.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You’ve already lost.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“No.”

He pointed at the key.

“She hasn't opened the room.”

Ethan glanced at Elena.

“She knows.”

Victor moved closer.

“Then perhaps you should tell her what she is about to find.”

Maya looked at everyone.

“Stop talking about me like I’m not here.”

She stepped into the center of the room.

“I’m done being protected.”

Victor studied her.

“That attitude comes from your mother.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Elena whispered, “Maya, please.”

“No.”

Maya turned toward her.

“For fifteen years, everyone decided what I could handle.”

She looked at Marcus.

“You told me Mom left.”

At Tara.

“You treated me like I was unwanted.”

At Ethan.

“You watched me grow up from a distance.”

At Daniel.

“You pretended to be dead.”

Finally, she faced Victor.

“And you apparently destroyed all of it.”

Victor’s expression barely moved.

Maya lifted the key.

“So I’m opening the room.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“No.”

Maya turned.

“Where is it?”

Elena pointed toward the back wall.

“There.”

A narrow iron panel was hidden behind a row of old shelves.

Marcus stared at it.

“I never saw that.”

“Exactly,” Elena said.

Maya walked toward the panel.

Victor took one step forward.

Ethan blocked him.

Victor sighed.

“You really are your mother’s son.”

Maya stopped.

“My mother’s daughter.”

Victor gave a faint smile.

“There are things about your birth you still don't understand.”

Maya turned the key over in her palm.

“Then watch me learn.”

She inserted it into the lock.

It clicked.

The iron panel opened.

Inside was a tiny room.

No windows.

No furniture except a steel box bolted to the floor.

Maya stepped inside.

The air smelled of dust and metal.

On top of the box was a folded piece of paper.

Her name was written on it.

MAYA.

She reached for it.

Elena whispered behind her.

“Read it alone.”

Maya looked back.

“No.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“You deserve to hear this from me.”

“Then come in.”

Elena stepped inside.

Marcus followed.

Ethan remained at the doorway.

Tara stood beside him.

Daniel watched from the wall.

Victor was still held back by Ethan.

Maya opened the letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Not Elena’s.

Not Marcus’s.

She read.

My daughter,

Maya’s breath caught.

You have spent your life believing your father was Marcus Carter.

She looked up.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The letter continued.

He raised you with love, even though he did not know the truth.

Maya looked at Marcus.

He opened his eyes.

There was pain in them.

Real pain.

The kind that needed no explanation.

She looked back at the page.

Your biological father is Ethan Carter.

Maya stared.

“That part we knew.”

Elena nodded.

Maya did.

But Ethan was not the man who protected you.

Her brows pulled together.

“What?”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Maya…”

She continued.

When Elena discovered the accounts, she learned that Victor Hale was not acting alone.

Maya looked toward Victor.

His face had gone completely still.

There was another person inside the family.

She read the next line.

Then froze.

“What?”

Marcus moved closer.

“What is it?”

Maya couldn’t speak.

She handed him the paper.

Marcus read.

His hands began to shake.

“No.”

Ethan took the letter.

His expression changed.

“No.”

Tara whispered, “What?”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Maya turned.

“What did it say?”

Marcus looked at her.

“It says Daniel ordered Victor to follow Elena.”

Maya stared at her grandfather.

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“But there’s more,” Marcus said.

He looked back at the letter.

“It says Ethan wasn’t supposed to be your father.”

Maya’s heart stopped.

“What?”

Ethan took the page from Marcus.

His eyes moved across the final paragraph.

Then he whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Elena stepped forward.

“It isn’t.”

Maya stared at her.

“What are you saying?”

Elena’s voice shook.

“Your biological father is Ethan.”

“Then why does the letter say he wasn't supposed to be?”

Elena looked at Ethan.

“Because Daniel never knew Elena was pregnant when he made the plan.”

Maya frowned.

“What plan?”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Daniel wanted me gone.”

Daniel said quietly, “Yes.”

“You wanted to kill Ethan?”

Marcus turned toward his father.

“You wanted to kill your own son?”

Daniel's voice was flat.

“I wanted to stop the investigation.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You call that an investigation?”

“I was desperate.”

“You hired Victor.”

“I hired him to scare you.”

“And my mother?”

Daniel looked at Elena.

“I never ordered her death.”

Elena's voice broke.

“But you ordered her disappearance.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Maya stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Victor threatened to expose the accounts.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed I could control him.”

Victor smiled.

“You couldn't.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

Maya felt sick.

“So Mom ran because of you.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan disappeared because of you.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad spent fifteen years grieving because of you.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Maya's fingers curled around the letter.

“Then why did Mom come back?”

Elena answered.

“Because of you.”

Maya looked at her.

“I came back six months after I disappeared. I found a way to see you.”

Her voice softened.

“You were sleeping.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“I stood outside your bedroom window.”

“You saw me?”

“Every time I could.”

“Why didn't you wake me?”

“Because Victor was watching.”

“Then how did you survive?”

Elena looked at Daniel.

“Because someone else helped me.”

Maya turned.

“Who?”

Elena hesitated.

Then said:

“Your grandfather.”

Marcus stared.

“What?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I realized too late what I had done.”

“You helped her?”

Daniel nodded.

“I gave her a new identity.”

Victor laughed.

“You betrayed me.”

Daniel ignored him.

“I moved Elena to a safe house.”

Maya looked at her mother.

“You stayed there all this time?”

“Not in one place.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor kept finding me.”

Victor's expression was cold.

“I only found you because Tara told me where to look.”

Tara flinched.

Maya turned toward her.

“You told him?”

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“She didn't have to.”

He looked at the old photograph on the desk.

“She was followed.”

Tara whispered, “I never knew.”

Maya looked at her.

“So you really were trying to protect me.”

Tara nodded.

“I was.”

For the first time, Maya believed her.

Then a metallic sound came from the steel box.

Everyone looked down.

A small red light blinked.

Daniel went pale.

“No.”

“What?” Marcus asked.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Move away from it.”

Maya stared.

“Why?”

“Because it's a transmitter.”

Victor's expression changed.

“Too late.”

The red light turned green.

A faint electronic beep filled the room.

Elena grabbed Maya.

“What did you do?”

“I opened it.”

“You activated it.”

“What does it transmit?”

Daniel answered.

“Your location.”

Maya looked at Victor.

“You knew this was here.”

“Yes.”

“And you wanted me to open it.”

Victor nodded.

“To lead us to your mother.”

Maya’s blood ran cold.

Elena grabbed her hand.

“We have to go.”

Victor looked toward the passage.

“There’s no need.”

They heard engines outside.

Several of them.

Then car doors slammed.

Marcus looked through the narrow opening.

“There are people outside.”

Ethan moved toward the passage.

“How many?”

Victor smiled.

“Enough.”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Give me the key.”

“No.”

“Maya, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She stepped backward.

“You all kept secrets because you were afraid of what would happen.”

Victor’s men began moving downstairs.

Maya looked at the steel box.

Then at the letter.

Then at her mother.

“What else is in this room?”

Elena pointed toward the floor.

“Nothing.”

Maya shook her head.

“There has to be.”

She remembered the line.

Your biological father is Ethan.

Then:

But Ethan was not the man who protected you.

Maya slowly looked at Marcus.

“Who protected me?”

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

Ethan looked at Elena.

Elena looked at Daniel.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Someone you have never met.”

Maya stared at him.

“Who?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“The real person who arranged your escape.”

Maya shook her head.

“You said Mom did it.”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.

He handed it to her.

Maya looked down.

There was Elena.

There was Ethan.

There was a younger Daniel.

And standing between them was a woman Maya had never seen before.

A woman holding newborn Maya.

Maya stared at the picture.

“Who is she?”

Elena's face went white.

She whispered the name.

“Rebecca.”

Maya looked up.

“Who is Rebecca?”

Elena took a breath.

“Your father's first wife.”

Marcus froze.

Ethan’s face went pale.

Maya looked between them.

“What?”

Elena pointed at the photograph.

“Rebecca was pregnant when Ethan disappeared.”

Maya stared at the baby in the photograph.

Her own face.

Her own eyes.

But Rebecca was holding her.

Maya's voice disappeared.

“Then how was I with Mom?”

Elena looked at Ethan.

Ethan slowly shook his head.

“I don't understand.”

Daniel whispered:

“That is because there were two babies.”

The room went silent.

Maya stared at him.

“Two?”

Daniel nodded.

“One was supposed to disappear.”

He looked toward Victor.

“And one was supposed to inherit everything.”

The door downstairs slammed open.

Footsteps thundered up the stairs.

Victor smiled.

“They've arrived.”

Maya clutched the photograph.

Her mind raced.

Two babies.

Two fathers.

One hidden fortune.

And a mother who had spent fifteen years protecting a truth no one had ever dared to tell her.

Then someone shouted from the hallway.

“Victor! We found the second room!”

Victor looked at Maya.

And for the first time, there was genuine fear in his eyes.

Because the people coming through the house were not his men.

They were police.

And at their front was a woman Maya recognized from the photograph.

Rebecca.

Alive.

May you like

And holding another birth certificate.

With Maya’s name on it.
