Chapter 1: The Sound Behind the Wall
The first thing my father heard when he came home was not my voice.
It was the sound of someone trapped.
A tiny knock.
Then silence.
Then another knock.
For six days, my stepmother had told everyone I was missing.
She cried in front of neighbors. She called the police. She stood beside my father with trembling hands and whispered that she had no idea where I had gone.
But while the entire town searched the streets for me, I was only a few feet away.
Behind a wall.
In the darkness.
My name is Lily Carter, and I was twelve years old when my stepmother tried to erase me.
Before that week, I thought I had a normal life.
Not perfect.
But normal.
My mother had died when I was seven, and my father, Daniel, had spent years trying to put our little family back together. He worked long hours repairing old houses, but he always came home with something small for me.
A chocolate bar.
A funny story.
A flower he picked from someone's garden because he said it reminded him of my mother.
Then he met Vanessa.
At first, I wanted to like her.
I really did.
She smiled constantly. She bought me expensive clothes. She told my father she wanted to become "the mother figure Lily deserves.""
Everyone loved her.
Everyone except me.
Because I saw the things she did when nobody was watching.
The way her smile disappeared when my father left the room.
The way she cleaned my mother's old photographs and quietly moved them into a box.
The way she told me, "Your father needs peace, Lily. Not constant reminders of the past.""
One night, I found my mother's wedding picture missing from the hallway.
I asked Vanessa about it.
She was cutting vegetables in the kitchen when I walked in.
"Where is Mom's photo?"" I asked.
The knife stopped moving.
Vanessa looked at me and smiled.
"Which photo?""
"The one that was on the wall.""
"Oh, that old thing?"" she said.
"I thought it made the house feel sad.""
I stared at her.
"You took it down?""
"I improved the room.""
"My dad put it there.""
She placed the knife down carefully.
"Lily, you need to understand something. This house belongs to your father and me now.""
Those words stayed with me.
Not because they were cruel.
Because of how calmly she said them.
Like she was warning me.
A month later, my father announced that he had to leave town for a construction project.
Only five days.
That was all.
He hugged me before leaving.
"Be good for Vanessa, okay?""
I looked over his shoulder.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway.
Smiling.
"I will," I whispered.
I didn't know that would be the last normal moment I had.
The first strange thing happened the next morning.
I woke up and noticed my bedroom door was locked from the outside.
I thought it was a mistake.
I knocked.
"Vanessa?""
No answer.
I knocked harder.
"Vanessa, can you open the door?""
After several minutes, I heard her footsteps.
The lock clicked.
She opened the door halfway.
"Everything okay?""
"Why was my door locked?""
Her face remained calm.
"Oh, that? The lock is old. It probably got stuck.""
I looked at the lock.
It was brand new.
I knew because my father had installed it two weeks earlier.
"Did you lock it?""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Why would I do that?""
I wanted to believe her.
I wanted to believe I was imagining things.
But then she stepped aside and pointed toward the hallway.
"I need your help with something.""
She led me to the unfinished room at the back of the house.
My father had been renovating it before leaving. The walls were exposed, and there were stacks of wooden boards, paint cans, and tools everywhere.
"This room is a mess," Vanessa said.
"Why are we here?""
She smiled.
"Because I have a surprise for you.""
I should have run.
I should have screamed.
But I was twelve.
And I still believed adults when they acted kind.
Vanessa walked to the far wall and touched a small opening near the floor.
"Your father wanted to make this into a secret storage space.""
I stepped closer.
"A secret room?""
"Yes.""
I smiled despite myself.
For one second, I forgot everything.
Then Vanessa pushed the door open.
The space inside was barely large enough for a person.
A narrow hidden compartment between the walls.
I looked inside.
"That's not a room.""
"No," she said.
Her voice changed.
"It's better.""
I turned around.
The smile was gone.
"What do you mean?""
She grabbed my arm.
Hard.
"You're always asking questions, Lily.""
I froze.
"Let go.""
"You think your father chooses you over me?""
"What?""
"You've been trying to ruin this family since the day I married him.""
My heart started racing.
"I never did that.""
Vanessa pulled me closer to the opening.
"You make him remember things he wants to forget.""
I screamed.
She covered my mouth.
The next few minutes felt unreal.
I remember the cold floor beneath my feet.
The smell of dust.
The sound of her breathing.
I remember begging.
"Please. Please don't do this.""
But Vanessa only whispered:
"Your father will finally understand how peaceful this house is without you.""
Then she pushed me inside.
The darkness swallowed me.
I screamed until my throat hurt.
I heard her moving outside.
Then came the sound I would never forget.
The sound of bricks being placed.
One after another.
She was building the wall.
I clawed at the surface.
"Vanessa!""
No answer.
Only her voice.
Muffled.
Calm.
"I'll tell Daniel you ran away.""
My blood turned cold.
Then she said something worse.
Something I never forgot.
"I'll tell him you left because you hated me.""
I didn't know how long I cried.
Minutes.
Hours.
Maybe longer.
But eventually, I remembered something.
Something Vanessa didn't know.
My father had given me an old phone for emergencies.
I kept it hidden inside my backpack.
My hands shook as I grabbed it.
The battery was almost dead.
I pressed record.
And I whispered into the darkness:
"If anyone finds this... Vanessa put me here.""
Then I heard footsteps outside.
She came back.
And she was talking to someone.
Someone who wasn't there.
She was practicing what she would say.
"I tried everything. I don't know why Lily ran away.""
I held my breath.
Then she laughed.
A quiet, satisfied laugh.
And I recorded every word.
But I didn't know the worst part yet.
Because the next morning, I heard her making the call that would change everything.
She called my father.
May you like
And she said my name.
"Daniel... I think Lily is gone.""
