Chapter 8: The Evidence Beneath the Wall
The old room felt different when I returned.
The same broken bricks.
The same dust.
The same place where I had spent six days fighting to survive.
But now I knew something.
The wall had been hiding a secret.
Not just me.
My father stood beside me.
"I can't believe I let this happen.""
I looked at him.
"Dad.""
He shook his head.
"No. I need to say it.""
His voice cracked.
"I spent years believing I was protecting you.""
He touched the broken wall.
"But I never saw the danger standing right beside us.""
Detective Harris searched the room carefully.
Every brick.
Every piece of wood.
Every hidden corner.
Then she stopped.
"Wait.""
She pointed.
Behind the remaining bricks was a small metal container.
My heart started pounding.
The detective pulled it out.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And a flash drive.
My father's face changed.
"What is that?""
Detective Harris looked at him.
"The evidence Vanessa was talking about.""
We brought everything to the police station.
The documents revealed years of planning.
Michael had been tracking my father's finances.
Vanessa had been gathering information about our family.
But the flash drive held something worse.
A video.
Recorded three years earlier.
The screen showed Vanessa and Michael sitting together.
I watched as they talked.
Calmly.
Like they were planning a business deal.
Vanessa said:
"Once Daniel signs everything over, the house is ours.""
Michael answered:
"And the girl?""
Vanessa looked away.
"She won't be a problem.""
I felt sick.
The video continued.
Michael said:
"What if she finds out?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Children believe what adults tell them.""
My father closed his eyes.
Detective Harris stopped the video.
Nobody spoke.
Then another file appeared.
A document.
My mother's final legal statement.
The one she had hidden.
My father read it silently.
Then handed it to me.
It said:
"If anything happens to me, Lily receives complete control of the family estate when she turns eighteen. No one may alter this without her consent.""
I finally understood.
The house wasn't just a house.
It was power.
And Vanessa wanted it.
But there was another page.
A handwritten note.
My mother wrote:
"I know someone close to me is trying to take this away.""
Then one name.
Michael.
But underneath it was another.
A name none of us expected.
My father.
I looked at him.
"What does this mean?""
He couldn't answer.
The police questioned him again.
Not as a suspect.
But as someone who had hidden information.
My father admitted something.
He had known Michael wanted the inheritance.
He had confronted him years ago.
And after my mother died, he buried everything.
"Why?"" I asked.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Because I thought I could handle it.""
The answer hurt.
Because it was exactly the kind of mistake that destroys families.
Thinking you can carry everything alone.
That night, my father and I sat outside.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
Finally, he said:
"I know I broke your trust.""
I looked at the stars.
"Yes.""
He nodded.
"I don't expect you to forgive me immediately.""
That surprised me.
Because he wasn't asking.
He was accepting.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A voice whispered.
"Lily.""
I froze.
Vanessa.
"Where are you?""
She laughed softly.
"Still protecting your father?""
I stood.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere you should have found years ago.""
"What does that mean?""
Her voice lowered.
"Your mother didn't just leave you the house.""
I held my breath.
"She left you the truth.""
Then the call ended.
Seconds later, a photo arrived.
A photo of my mother.
Taken the night she died.
May you like
And standing beside her...
Was my father.
