Chapter 7: The Truth My Father Hid

I spent my entire childhood believing my father was my hero.

He was the man who stayed.

The man who protected me.

The man who promised nobody would ever hurt me again.

But that night, I saw something different.

I saw a man carrying a secret so heavy it had changed the way he lived.

My father sat on the couch holding the letter.

He didn't speak for almost ten minutes.

Finally, I asked:

"What did Mom mean?""

He closed his eyes.

"I don't know.""

I stared at him.

"You do.""

The words sounded harsh.

But I needed the truth.

My father looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, he looked ashamed.

"I made mistakes.""

"What mistakes?""

He took a deep breath.

"Before your mother died, our marriage was falling apart.""

I felt like the room tilted.

"What?""

"Not because I didn't love her.""

"Then why?""

He looked away.

"I was angry all the time. Work was difficult. Money was difficult. I became someone I didn't recognize.""

I waited.

"And Michael knew.""

My father explained that after years of fighting, he had considered leaving.

Not leaving me.

Leaving the marriage.

But he never did.

Because my mother found out.

"She was hurt," he said.

"She thought I didn't love her anymore.""

"Did you?""

He looked at me immediately.

"No.""

The answer came so fast I believed him.

"I loved her. I was just lost.""

I looked down.

"Then what did Michael mean?""

My father didn't answer.

That was the problem.

There was always something he wasn't saying.

The next morning, Detective Harris returned.

She had found more information about Michael.

"He wasn't dead," she said.

"Obviously," my father muttered.

"He changed his name.""

"Why?""

"Because he was avoiding people from his past.""

She placed another folder down.

"People like Vanessa.""

My father looked confused.

"What?""

Detective Harris opened the file.

"Michael and Vanessa knew each other for years.""

I looked at my father.

"So she didn't meet him because of the renovation.""

"No," Detective Harris said.

"They planned this together.""

The pieces finally connected.

Vanessa didn't randomly enter my life.

She was chosen.

She was sent.

But why?

The answer came that afternoon.

A package arrived at the house.

No return address.

Inside was a small recording device.

And a note.

For Lily.

My father wanted to call the police immediately.

But I pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

My mother's voice.

I stopped breathing.

"Lily, if you are hearing this, something happened.""

Tears filled my eyes.

Mom.

Her voice was older than my memories.

But it was still her.

"I need you to know something. There are people who will tell you I was weak. They will tell you I made mistakes. But the truth is, I was trying to protect you.""

My father looked devastated.

The recording continued.

"Michael knows about the inheritance. He always has.""

A pause.

Then:

"But the person I fear most is not Michael.""

My heart raced.

My father leaned closer.

"Who?"" I whispered.

My mother's voice became softer.

"It is someone who has access to everything.""

The recording clicked.

Then another voice appeared.

A man's voice.

My father's voice.

Younger.

Angrier.

I looked at him.

He went pale.

The recording played.

"She can't know about the money.""

My father's younger voice.

My stomach dropped.

"Daniel, you can't keep lying.""

My mother's voice.

Then a crash.

A door slamming.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

My father looked broken.

"I don't remember that.""

I stared at him.

"How can you not remember?""

"I was angry. I was drunk.""

The words hung in the air.

My father covered his face.

"I never hurt your mother.""

"But you scared her.""

He didn't answer.

Because he knew.

That night, I couldn't look at him the same way.

Not because I thought he was evil.

Because I realized good people can make terrible choices.

And terrible people can use those choices against them.

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

Her voice sounded urgent.

"Lily, we found Vanessa.""

"What?""

"She escaped custody during a medical transfer.""

My blood froze.

"Where is she?""

There was silence.

Then:

"She left a message.""

"What message?""

Detective Harris paused.

"She said she knows where your mother hid the real evidence.""

My father grabbed the phone.

"Where?""

The detective answered.

"Inside the wall.""

I looked toward the broken room at the back of the house.

The wall that had trapped me.

The wall that started everything.

And suddenly I realized.

May you like

Maybe Vanessa hadn't built that wall to hide me.

Maybe she built it to hide something else.
