Chapter 5: The Recording That Changed Everything
The police searched the property until sunrise.
But they found nothing.
No footprints.
No cameras.
No sign that anyone had been near my room.
That somehow made it worse.
Because whoever was behind this knew exactly how to disappear.
My father refused to leave my side.
For the first time in years, I saw fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for me.
“I should have protected you.””
I looked at him.
“You should have told me the truth.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
My mother sat nearby, silently crying.
She had missed twelve years of my life.
Birthdays.
Graduations.
Everything.
But somehow, I couldn’t hate her.
Not after learning she had been fighting to survive.
Later that afternoon, Maria came into the room carrying her laptop.
“I found something.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
“The second recording.””
Everyone became still.
The one Maria mentioned before.
The one Evelyn didn’t want anyone to see.
Maria connected the laptop to the television.
The video began.
It showed Evelyn sitting in our kitchen.
But this time, she wasn’t alone.
A man was sitting across from her.
I didn’t recognize him.
My father did.
His face turned pale.
“No…”
“Who is that?”” I asked.
My father didn’t answer.
The man on the screen smiled.
“Once the girl is gone, everything becomes easier.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And Daniel?””
The man laughed.
“He’ll believe whatever you tell him.””
My hands curled into fists.
They had planned everything.
The man leaned closer.
“What about Anna?””
Evelyn smiled.
“She should have stayed hidden.””
My mother covered her mouth.
The video continued.
Then came the part nobody expected.
The man turned slightly toward the camera.
And his face became clear.
My father stood up.
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is he?”” I asked.
My father looked at me.
His voice barely worked.
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“My uncle?””
My father nodded slowly.
“Your mother’s brother.””
The room exploded into questions.
Why would my own family want me gone?
Why would Evelyn work with him?
Then Maria paused the video.
“There’s more.””
She pointed at the screen.
In the corner of the recording was a timestamp.
But not the date.
The location.
My father leaned closer.
His expression changed.
Because the recording wasn’t made in our house.
It was made somewhere else.
Somewhere I recognized.
A place from my childhood.
My old family home.
The place where my mother disappeared.
Then Maria whispered:
“Your mother wasn’t the only person who was there that night.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She pressed play again.
The screen went black.
Then a voice appeared.
A voice I knew.
A voice that made my entire body go cold.
My own voice.
From twelve years ago.
A child’s voice.

Saying one sentence:
“Dad… I saw what happened to Mom.””
