Chapter 9: The Truth About That Night

I didn’t let my father sleep.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed answers.

“You know what happened.””

He sat across from me.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Tell me.””

He looked older than he had yesterday.

“I remember that night.””

My mother held my hand.

My father continued.

“Your mother came to me with evidence against Michael and Evelyn.””

“Evidence about what?””

“They were stealing money from the company.””

I felt sick.

“They planned everything?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop them?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I didn’t believe her.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought she was angry. I thought she was trying to destroy my family.””

My mother looked away.

“I begged you.””

“I know.””

My father’s voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

He continued.

“When I realized the truth, I went to confront Michael.””

“What happened?””

“They attacked me.””

I stared.

“Then why are you alive?””

“Because your mother saved me.””

My mother looked down.

“I found him unconscious.””

My father continued.

“But when I woke up, Michael and Evelyn were gone.””

“And Mom?””

Silence.

Then my mother answered.

“They caught me.””

I held my breath.

“They wanted me to disappear.””

My father looked at me.

“But they didn’t know you saw.””

I remembered the recording.

My younger voice.

“I saw them.””

My mother nodded.

“You saw Michael push me down the stairs.””

The room went silent.

My hand covered my mouth.

The memory came back.

Not everything.

Pieces.

A scream.

A fall.

Blood.

Evelyn telling me to forget.

My father looked broken.

“I thought you were too young to remember.””

“I did remember.””

I looked at him.

“She made me forget.””

That afternoon, the police reopened the investigation.

The evidence from the hidden room changed everything.

But Michael and Evelyn were still missing.

Until one final message arrived.

This time, it wasn’t a threat.

It was an address.

My father recognized it immediately.

“The warehouse.””

“What warehouse?””

“Where Michael used to store stolen company records.””

We went there with police.

Inside, we found Evelyn.

But she wasn’t alone.

Michael was there too.

He smiled when he saw us.

“I knew you’d come.””

My father stepped forward.

“Why?””

Michael laughed.

“Why?””

His expression turned angry.

“Because everything was supposed to be mine.””

“You tried to kill my daughter.””

Michael looked at me.

“She was never supposed to be part of this.””

Evelyn smiled.

“She was always the problem.””

The police moved closer.

Then Michael pulled out a folder.

“Before you arrest me, you should know something.””

My father stopped.

“What?””

Michael threw the folder toward him.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

My father read them.

Then his face changed.

“What is this?””

Michael smiled.

“The truth about your daughter’s inheritance.””

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

Michael laughed.

“You thought Evelyn wanted your money?””

He shook his head.

“She wanted something much bigger.””

My father looked at the papers.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“She wanted control of your trust.””

My blood ran cold.

But Michael wasn’t finished.

“There’s one more thing.””

He looked at my mother.

“The person who helped us disappear…”

Everyone froze.

May you like

Michael smiled.

“Was someone you trust.””
