Chapter 7: The Hidden Room Under the House

The next morning, my father called everyone he trusted.

Lawyers.

Investigators.

People who had spent years protecting his company.

But none of them could answer the question that mattered.

What was the original recording?

My mother sat at the kitchen table, holding a cup of coffee she never drank.

“I know where it is.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“You do?”” I asked.

She nodded slowly.

“I hid it.””

My father stared.

“Where?””

She looked toward the window.

“Under the old house.””

The words made the room silent.

The old house.

The place where everything began.

My father’s childhood home.

The place where my mother disappeared.

“You hid evidence there?”” he asked.

“I had no choice.””

She looked at him.

“Evelyn had people watching me. I couldn’t keep it with me.””

Maria frowned.

“What was on the recording?””

My mother looked down.

“The truth.””

“That’s not an answer,” I said.

She closed her eyes.

“It showed who actually attacked me.””

Nobody moved.

My father whispered:

“Attacked?””

My mother nodded.

“I wasn’t leaving you.””

Her voice trembled.

“I was running.””

My heart broke.

“From who?””

She looked at my father.

Then she answered.

“Your brother.””

My father went completely still.

“My brother is dead.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

The room became freezing.

“He changed his name. He disappeared.””

My father stood.

“That’s impossible.””

“He wanted everyone to believe he was gone.””

Maria looked confused.

“Then who was the man in the video?””

My mother whispered:

“Your father’s brother.””

My father grabbed the table.

“My brother died in a car accident.””

“No,” my mother said.

“Someone wanted you to believe that.””

We returned to the old house that afternoon.

The place had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered everything.

The walls carried memories nobody wanted to touch.

I walked through the hallway where I had last seen my mother.

My chest tightened.

“I was here.””

My mother looked at me.

“Yes.””

“I remember screaming.””

She nodded.

“I heard you.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I wanted to run to you.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Because Evelyn was holding a knife.””

Everyone went silent.

My father looked horrified.

“She threatened you?””

“She threatened you too.””

We searched every room.

Nothing.

Then Maria noticed something strange.

“The floor.””

Everyone looked down.

One wooden panel was slightly different.

She knelt.

“This was moved recently.””

My father helped lift it.

Underneath was a hidden staircase.

A secret room.

Nobody spoke.

The air smelled old.

Forgotten.

We climbed down.

Inside was a small space filled with boxes.

Documents.

Photos.

Old recordings.

My mother walked straight to a small metal container.

“That’s it.””

She opened it.

Inside was a small memory card.

My father reached for it.

But before he touched it, a sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Someone was inside the house.

My father immediately turned.

“Stay here.””

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“I’m not hiding anymore.””

We climbed back up.

The hallway was empty.

Then Maria pointed.

The front door was open.

On the floor was an envelope.

My father picked it up.

Inside was a note.

Only one sentence.

*You should have left the past buried.*

Then another line appeared beneath it.

A name.

My father read it.

May you like

And dropped the paper.

Because the person who sent it was someone we thought was dead.
