Chapter 2: The Question My Father Finally Asked

For several seconds, nobody answered.

The mall continued moving around us. Shopping bags rustled. A child laughed near the escalator. Somewhere behind us, a store employee called for assistance at the register.

But my father stood perfectly still.

He was holding enough shopping bags to cover both hands.

Vanessa's children had new clothes, new shoes, and expensive accessories.

And I was standing there with a broken sneaker.

Vanessa recovered first.

“Daniel, sweetheart, you're misunderstanding.””

Dad placed his shopping bags on the bench.

“What's there to misunderstand?””

She gave him a bright smile.

“We've been shopping all afternoon. The children have everything they need.””

Dad looked at Tyler and Madison.

Then he looked at me.

“What did Nia get?””

Vanessa adjusted the strap of her handbag.

“Well, we were going to get her something later.””

“Later?””

“Yes. The store was crowded, and she was being difficult about what she wanted.””

I stared at the floor.

Dad's eyebrows drew together.

“Difficult?””

Vanessa sighed as if she had been forced to explain something obvious.

“She wanted an expensive pair of shoes. I told her we needed to stay within the budget.””

Dad looked toward the shoe store.

“How expensive?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“It doesn't matter. We had other priorities.””

Dad's voice became quieter.

“Vanessa, I transferred the shopping money this morning. I specifically told you that each child should get what they needed.””

“Exactly,” she replied quickly.

“And I did.””

Dad glanced at the shopping bags.

“Then where are Nia's things?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She doesn't need as much as my children. Tyler is growing. Madison needs new clothes for school. Nia has perfectly good shoes at home.””

I looked down at my feet.

One of the laces had snapped that morning.

I had tied the remaining piece into a knot.

Dad followed my gaze.

His jaw tightened.

“Nia,” he said gently, “come here.””

I stepped closer.

He crouched in front of me, ignoring the expensive suit trousers brushing against the mall floor.

He examined the worn sneakers.

The torn fabric.

The loose sole.

The thin rubber at the bottom.

He touched the edge of the damaged shoe.

“How long have you been wearing these?””

I hesitated.

“Since last school year.””

Dad looked up.

“Since last school year?””

I nodded.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She gave me a warning stare.

Dad noticed.

“Nia, look at me.””

I raised my eyes.

“You can tell me anything. You're not going to get in trouble.””

My throat tightened.

“Vanessa said your budget was for her kids.””

The words came out quietly.

But they landed like a stone.

Dad slowly stood.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“Daniel, that's not what I said.””

I continued before I could lose my courage.

“She said Tyler needed two pairs because he's growing. Madison needed boots. She said I could keep wearing my old ones because I already had shoes.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She is twisting everything.””

Dad looked at her.

“Did you tell my daughter that the shopping budget was for your children?””

“I told her we had to be responsible.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa glanced around.

People were beginning to notice the conversation.

She lowered her voice.

“Daniel, can we discuss this privately?””

“No. We can discuss it right here.””

Tyler shifted uncomfortably.

“Mom, can we just go?””

Vanessa snapped her fingers toward him.

“Stay where you are.””

Madison looked at me.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed unsure of herself.

Dad picked up his shopping bags.

“Show me the shoes you wanted, Nia.””

Vanessa immediately stepped between us.

“Daniel, there's no reason to make a scene.””

Dad moved around her.

“I'm buying my daughter a pair of shoes.””

“She doesn't need those particular shoes.””

“That's my decision.””

He took my hand.

We walked back toward the shoe department.

I could barely believe what was happening.

Dad hadn't yelled. He hadn't pushed anyone. He simply walked beside me, carrying his bags, while I tried to keep pace with his long steps.

When we entered the store, the sales assistant recognized us.

“Welcome back,” she said.

“Are you looking for something else?””

Dad nodded.

“The white sneakers my daughter was looking at.””

The woman glanced toward Vanessa, who had followed us.

“Certainly. I believe those were placed back on the display.””

She retrieved the box.

Dad took it from her.

Then he handed it directly to me.

“Try them on, sweetheart.””

I stared at the box.

“Really?””

He smiled.

“Really.””

I sat on the bench and opened it.

The shoes were even prettier than I remembered.

I removed my old sneakers carefully and placed them beside me. My socks had small holes near the toes.

Dad noticed.

He didn't say anything.

He simply knelt down and helped me slide the new shoes onto my feet.

They fit perfectly.

I stood and took a few steps.

The soles felt soft.

For the first time in months, my toes weren't pressing against torn fabric.

Dad smiled.

“There you go.””

I hugged him.

“Thank you, Daddy.””

He wrapped his arms around me.

“You never have to feel guilty for needing something.””

Behind him, Vanessa let out a sharp breath.

“Daniel, you're making this child think she can have whatever she wants.””

Dad turned.

“No. I'm teaching her that she deserves basic care.””

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

“You're making me look like a monster.””

Dad held her gaze.

“I'm asking why my daughter has been wearing shoes with holes in them while your children walk around with multiple shopping bags.””

“Those children are your family too,” Vanessa replied.

“I know. That's why I bought them things. But being part of this family doesn't give you permission to neglect Nia.””

The sales assistant suddenly became very interested in arranging the shoe display.

I held the shoebox against my chest.

Then I remembered something.

Something I'd been carrying for months.

I looked at Dad.

“Daddy?””

He turned immediately.

“What is it?””

I glanced at Vanessa.

Her face had become strangely pale.

I lowered my voice.

“Ask what she did with Mom's things.””

Dad went completely still.

Vanessa's hand tightened around her handbag.

“What things?”” she asked.

I swallowed.

“Mom's jewelry.””

Dad slowly turned toward her.

“What is Nia talking about?””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“I don't know. She's upset because I wouldn't buy her shoes. Now she's bringing up old things.””

Dad didn't move.

“Nia, what happened to your mother's jewelry?””

I looked at him.

“Vanessa said she would keep it safe after Mom died.””

Dad's expression changed.

“Which jewelry?””

“The silver heart necklace. The one Mom always wore.””

A long silence followed.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Where is it?””

She shifted her weight.

“I don't remember. It's been years.””

“You don't remember?””

“I packed up some of Claire's belongings. I may have donated a few things. I honestly don't know.””

Dad's eyes narrowed.

“You told me everything was stored in the upstairs closet.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was overwhelmed at the time.””

Dad took a breath.

“Did you sell anything?””

“No!””

Her answer came too quickly.

I looked at Dad.

“Mom told me it would be mine when I got older.””

His face softened.

He reached for my shoulder.

“I remember, sweetheart.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous. We're standing in a shoe store arguing about a necklace that probably doesn't even exist anymore.””

Dad looked at her for several seconds.

Then he said something I had never heard him say before.

“Don't dismiss my daughter's memories.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, a store employee approached us.

“Sir, I'm sorry to interrupt. There's something you should know.””

Dad turned.

“Yes?””

The employee glanced toward Vanessa, then toward the mall entrance.

“There's a young man outside who says he witnessed what happened earlier. He asked whether he could speak with you.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“What young man?””

The employee pointed through the glass storefront.

A teenage boy stood near the entrance.

The same boy I'd seen earlier.

He was holding his phone.

And he was looking directly at Vanessa.

Dad followed the employee's gesture.

“Bring him over,” he said.

The boy approached slowly.

“Are you Nia's father?””

“Yes. My name is Daniel.””

The boy nodded.

“My name's Marcus. I was in the store earlier.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Why were you recording my family?””

Marcus looked at her.

Then he looked at Dad.

“Because I think you should see something.””

May you like

He unlocked his phone.

And the first video he showed my father wasn't the one Vanessa was worried about.
