Chapter 5: My Mother's Letter Was Never Meant for Vanessa

Dad didn't open the envelope immediately.

He simply stared at it.

His thumb moved across the handwriting, tracing each letter as if he were touching my mother's hand.

Michael sat down opposite him.

“Where did you get this?”” Dad asked.

“From the original estate file.””

Dad looked up.

“You've had this all along?””

Michael shook his head.

“No. Claire gave it to me shortly before she passed. She instructed me to keep it sealed until certain conditions were met.””

“What conditions?””

Michael opened his briefcase again.

He removed a folder containing several documents.

“Claire was concerned about the possibility that some of her personal property might not reach Nia.””

Dad's face hardened.

“Did she tell you Vanessa might take it?””

Michael hesitated.

“She didn't name anyone. But she specifically requested that the contents of a separate personal-property inventory remain protected until Nia was old enough to understand what they meant.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Does it say something about me?””

Michael smiled gently.

“Yes, sweetheart. It does.””

Dad carefully opened the seal.

Inside was a folded letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Mom sitting at our old kitchen table.

She was wearing her silver heart necklace.

I recognized the blue ribbon around a brown box on the table beside her.

Dad unfolded the letter.

His hands trembled slightly.

He began reading aloud.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. I have tried to prepare for every possibility, but there are some things even love cannot prevent.

Dad stopped.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he continued.

First, please make sure Nia is safe. Whatever happens, don't let her grow up believing she must earn the right to be loved.

My throat tightened.

Dad looked at me.

Then he continued.

There are documents and personal items in the brown box with the blue ribbon. They belong to Nia. Some are sentimental. Others are important for her future.

I have placed the inventory with Michael. He knows what must be protected.

The silver heart is only one part of what I left behind.

Dad paused.

Michael leaned forward.

“There's more.””

Dad unfolded the final page.

Daniel, I need you to understand something. I didn't choose the person who will eventually take care of these things based on who promises to love our daughter. I chose based on who can prove they will protect her.

Please don't make the mistake of confusing a person's affection for you with their intentions toward Nia.

The room went silent.

Dad lowered the letter.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he asked Michael:

“Why didn't you tell me about this?””

Michael folded his hands.

“Because Claire's instructions were very specific. She wanted the sealed letter released if Nia's property was found to be missing, or if someone attempted to interfere with her inheritance.””

Dad stared at him.

“Are you saying Vanessa was never supposed to have access to the box?””

“Correct.””

I looked between them.

“What inheritance?””

Michael turned toward me.

“Your mother wanted to make sure you would always have something of your own, Nia. She arranged for certain assets to be held in trust for you.””

I frowned.

“Like money?””

“Yes. Money, investments, and a few personal items.””

Dad looked shocked.

“How much money?””

Michael opened another document.

“I'm not going to discuss exact figures until we've reviewed the full records, but your wife established a trust that was intended to support Nia's education and future needs.””

Dad leaned back.

“Vanessa knew about this?””

Michael shook his head.

“She was not named as a beneficiary or trustee.””

I looked down at my hands.

“So the box was mine?””

Michael nodded.

“That's right.””

Dad stood and walked toward the kitchen window.

“Vanessa told me she had donated some of Claire's things.””

Michael's expression became serious.

“Did she have access to the original inventory?””

“She handled the house after Claire died. I was barely functioning. I trusted her.””

Michael didn't criticize him.

Instead, he opened another folder.

“Daniel, I need to ask you something. Did you ever sign documents transferring control of any property belonging to Claire?””

Dad shook his head.

“Not that I remember.””

Michael placed a document on the table.

“This is a copy of an authorization dated fourteen months after Claire's death.””

Dad looked at it.

His face changed.

It contained his signature.

At least, it looked like his signature.

“What is this?””

Michael pointed to the title.

“Authorization to release and transfer personal property.””

Dad read the page.

Then he pushed it away.

“I never signed this.””

Michael remained calm.

“Are you certain?””

“Absolutely.””

I watched Dad's expression.

He looked as if someone had just told him the floor beneath his feet wasn't real.

The document listed several items:

A silver necklace.

A gold bracelet.

A collection of antique watches.

Two jewelry boxes.

And a small brown storage container.

Dad ran a finger down the page.

“Who authorized this?””

Michael looked at the signature.

“According to the document, you did.””

“I didn't.””

Michael turned the page.

There was a witness signature.

Vanessa's name.

Dad closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Then he asked:

“Was this submitted to anyone?””

“Yes. The storage company accepted it as proof of authorization for the release of the listed property.””

Dad stared at him.

“So she used my name.””

Michael nodded carefully.

“That's one possibility. We need to establish how the document was created and whether it was valid.””

I remembered Vanessa standing in the kitchen months earlier, carrying a brown box.

She had told me not to touch it.

I had asked if it contained Mom's jewelry.

She had answered, “Your mother left nothing important behind.””

Now I understood why she had become so nervous when I mentioned the box.

Dad picked up the phone.

He called Officer Reynolds.

He explained the letter, the trust, and the document.

The officer asked him to preserve everything.

She also requested that Michael provide copies through the appropriate channels.

After the call, Michael closed his briefcase.

“Daniel, I strongly advise you not to confront Vanessa about the paperwork before the officers have reviewed it.””

Dad nodded.

“I understand.””

Then the front door opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

She was carrying her handbag and wearing the same red blouse from the mall.

She stopped when she saw Michael.

“Why is he here?””

Dad didn't answer.

She looked at the documents on the table.

“What are those?””

Michael closed the folder.

“Legal documents concerning Claire's estate.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Why are you discussing that without me?””

Dad stood.

“Because the property belonged to Claire and was intended for Nia.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Here we go again.””

Dad placed the letter on the table.

“Did you know Claire had created a trust for Nia?””

Vanessa froze.

It lasted only a second.

But I saw it.

Michael saw it too.

Dad noticed.

“Vanessa?””

She removed her coat.

“Daniel, I don't know what story he's telling you, but I have done nothing wrong.””

“Did you know about the trust?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Maybe I heard something about it.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“Did you sign this document?””

Dad slid the authorization across the table.

Vanessa glanced at it.

Her face went pale.

Then she picked it up.

“I don't remember.””

Michael spoke calmly.

“You are listed as a witness.””

Vanessa dropped the paper.

“I signed dozens of things during that period. I can't remember every document.””

Dad looked at her.

“Did I sign it?””

She stared at him.

“I don't know.””

“It's my signature.””

“Then maybe you forgot.””

Dad shook his head.

“I didn't.””

Vanessa walked toward the kitchen counter.

“You're allowing this lawyer to turn our home into a courtroom.””

Michael stood.

“This isn't a courtroom, Mrs. Daniel. It's an investigation into property belonging to a child.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Don't call me that.””

Michael looked at her.

“Call you what?””

“Like I'm some stranger.””

Dad stepped between them.

“Vanessa, sit down.””

She didn't.

Instead, she looked at me.

“Nia, go upstairs.””

I hesitated.

Dad shook his head.

“She stays.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“You're choosing her over me?””

Dad stared at her.

“This isn't a competition.””

“It always has been.””

The words came out before she could stop herself.

Nobody moved.

Dad's voice lowered.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I mean, you always make everything about Claire and Nia. You never let us become a real family.””

Dad shook his head slowly.

“You didn't need to replace Claire. You needed to help me raise my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“And what did I get? A little girl who looks at me as if I'm the enemy?””

I looked down.

Dad stepped forward.

“Because you took away things that belonged to her?””

“I never took anything!””

Michael placed the document on the table again.

“Then perhaps you'll have no difficulty explaining the authorization.””

Vanessa looked at the paper.

Then she turned toward the hallway.

“I need some air.””

Dad didn't stop her.

But as she reached the door, her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

I couldn't read all of it.

But I saw the sender's name.

*GREG.*

And I saw the first line.

They found the necklace. Did you move the other box?

Vanessa quickly turned off her screen.

Too late.

Dad had seen it.

So had Michael.

Dad slowly reached for his phone.

“Who is Greg?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Michael looked at the message notification still visible on the screen.

Then he said something that made Dad's face turn white.

“Daniel, I recognize that name.””
