Chapter 3: The Boy Who Recorded Everything
Marcus held his phone carefully, as though he was afraid someone might snatch it away.
Dad stood beside him.
Vanessa stood several feet away, pretending to examine a display of handbags.
I remained close to my father, still holding the shoebox.
“What's on the video?”” Dad asked.
Marcus glanced at Vanessa.
“I recorded the argument in the shoe store. I didn't mean to get involved at first. But when she took the shoes away from Nia, I thought something wasn't right.””
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“That's enough. You're a child. You don't understand what you're talking about.””
Marcus didn't lower his phone.
“I understand what I saw.””
Dad held out his hand.
“Can I watch it?””
Marcus nodded and handed him the device.
The video began with the shoe display.
The camera angle was slightly tilted, but the conversation was clear.
Vanessa's voice came through the speakers.
“Put those back.””
Then my voice.
“My old shoes are falling apart.””
The camera shifted.
It showed Vanessa placing the box on the shelf.
Then came her words.
“Your father gave us a shopping budget. I have two children to take care of, and I'm not wasting money on things you don't need.””
Dad stopped the video.
He stared at the screen.
Then he played it again.
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Daniel, you're seriously going to believe a stranger over your own wife?””
Dad looked up.
“I believe my eyes and ears.””
“You're embarrassing me.””
“That's not my concern right now.””
Marcus retrieved his phone.
“There is something else.””
Dad looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus hesitated.
“The necklace.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“That's enough!””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was so sharp that the sales assistant stopped arranging the display.
Dad's eyes narrowed.
“What does he know about the necklace?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I saw something earlier.””
“Where?””
“Near the parking garage. I was waiting for my mother, and I saw that woman talking to someone beside a black SUV.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is insane.””
Marcus continued.
“She had a small jewelry box. The man asked her whether she had brought the silver heart pendant. She said she was going to give it to him after the weekend.””
Dad's face went blank.
I felt his hand tighten around mine.
“What did you say?”” he asked.
Marcus nodded.
“I thought it was strange because I recognized the necklace from a picture.””
I pulled the photograph from my hoodie pocket.
“Was it this one?””
Marcus looked at the image.
His eyes widened.
“That's it.””
I stared at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw it. It was inside the jewelry box.””
Vanessa shook her head repeatedly.
“No. No, that's not what happened.””
Dad stepped toward her.
“Where is Claire's necklace?””
Vanessa looked around the store.
“Daniel, we need to stop this.””
“Answer me.””
“I told you, I don't know!””
Marcus took a breath.
“I recorded that conversation too.””
Vanessa froze.
The boy opened another video.
The picture was dark and shaky. A black SUV was visible in the background. Two figures stood beside it.
One was Vanessa.
The other was a man wearing a gray jacket.
The conversation was faint, but understandable.
Vanessa's voice came first.
“I told you I'd bring it.””
The man replied.
“You've been saying that for weeks.””
“I have to be careful. Daniel has started asking questions.””
The man laughed.
“Then sell it before he notices.””
Vanessa glanced toward the parking garage entrance.
“I don't want any trouble.””
The man replied, “You already have trouble. You took something that wasn't yours.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Dad looked at the phone.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Who was that man?””
She crossed her arms.
“Some stranger. I don't know him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I heard him call you by your name.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Stop talking!””
Dad raised one hand.
“Vanessa. Enough.””
She looked at him.
Her eyes were beginning to shine, but there were no tears.
“You're going to destroy our marriage over a piece of jewelry?””
Dad's voice was low.
“It's not about the jewelry.””
“Then what is it about?””
“It's about my daughter asking where her mother's belongings went, and you refusing to answer.””
Vanessa looked at me.
For a second, her expression was so cold that I instinctively moved closer to Dad.
Then she turned back to him.
“You know what? I have sacrificed so much for this family. I cook.
I clean. I take care of all three children. And this is what I get?””
Dad stared at her.
“You don't get credit for mistreating a child while performing the responsibilities you agreed to take on.””
Tyler stepped forward.
“Mom, maybe we should just go.””
Vanessa snapped.
“Get back.””
Madison looked frightened.
She held her shopping bags against her chest.
“Mom, I want to go home.””
Vanessa ignored her.
Dad took out his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“Don't you dare.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because this is a family matter.””
“Taking someone's property isn't a family matter.””
“You don't even know what you're accusing me of!””
“Then you can explain everything to the officers.””
Dad stepped away and made the call.
While he spoke, I sat on the bench and held my new shoes.
Marcus sat nearby.
“Are you okay?”” he asked.
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
He shrugged.
“I just didn't think it was right.””
I looked down at my shoes.
“My mom used to say that doing the right thing isn't always easy.””
Marcus smiled faintly.
“She sounds like she was a good person.””
“She was.””
Across the store, Vanessa was speaking rapidly to Tyler.
“Don't say anything to anybody,” she whispered.
Tyler looked uncomfortable.
“Mom, I didn't do anything.””
“I know. Just stay quiet.””
Dad ended his call.
“They're sending officers.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is unbelievable.””
Dad didn't answer.
Instead, he opened one of the shopping bags he had been carrying.
“I bought something earlier,” he said.
He reached inside and pulled out a small jewelry pouch.
Then he opened it.
A silver heart-shaped necklace rested in his palm.
My breath caught.
I knew that pendant.
I knew the tiny engraved flower on the back.
I knew the little scratch near the clasp, the one Mom had once said came from the day she dropped it while dancing in the kitchen.
“Mommy,” I whispered.
Dad looked at me.
“I found it this morning.””
I stared at the necklace.
“Where?””
He closed his fingers around it carefully.
“In a box of things I had brought home from the storage unit. I didn't realize it was there until I opened the bag.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Dad looked at her.
“Why was this necklace in your belongings?””
She opened her mouth.
No words came out.
Dad continued.
“I went through the storage boxes because I was looking for Claire's old photographs. I found this necklace wrapped inside a scarf that belonged to you.””
Vanessa took a step backward.
“That doesn't prove anything.””
“No,” Dad replied.
“But Marcus's video gives us something to investigate.””
The necklace glimmered under the store lights.
I reached out.
Dad placed it gently in my palm.
It was cold.
Exactly as I remembered.
I closed my fingers around it.
For a moment, I could almost hear Mom's voice.
Not because it's expensive. Because it reminds me of the people I love.
Then I noticed Vanessa staring at the pendant.
Not at me.
Not at Dad.
At the necklace itself.
Her expression wasn't sadness.
It was fear.
A few minutes later, two uniformed police officers entered the store.
One was a tall Black woman with her hair pulled into a neat bun. The other was a broad-shouldered man carrying a small notepad.
They approached Dad.
“Good afternoon,” the female officer said.
“We received a call about a possible property dispute and a witness who has recorded relevant footage.””
Dad nodded.
“My name is Daniel. This is my daughter, Nia.””
The male officer looked toward Vanessa.
“Are you the person involved?””
Vanessa forced a smile.
“This is a misunderstanding. My husband is upset, and he's making accusations because our daughter wanted something she couldn't have.””
The female officer didn't react.
“Ma'am, we're going to need to hear everyone's account separately.””
Vanessa looked at Dad.
“Daniel, tell them this is a family disagreement.””
Dad shook his head.
“I won't lie to protect anyone.””
The officer turned to Marcus.
“Do you have the original recordings?””
“Yes, ma'am.””
“Don't delete or edit anything. We'll need to document what you captured.””
Marcus nodded.
The second officer looked at the necklace in my hand.
“Is that the item you're reporting?””
Dad answered.
“It belonged to my late wife. My daughter was supposed to inherit it. We have reason to believe it may have been taken and offered to someone else.””
The officer nodded.
“Can you show me the pendant?””
I carefully opened my hand.
The silver heart rested against my palm.
The female officer examined it without touching it.
“Do you have any photographs showing the original owner wearing it?””
I immediately pulled out Mom's photograph.
The officer studied the picture.
“Thank you, sweetheart.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“That necklace was given to me.””
Dad turned toward her.
“By whom?””
She hesitated.
“I don't remember.””
The male officer looked at her.
“You just said it was given to you. Now you're saying you don't remember who gave it to you?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“I meant—”
The female officer raised her hand.
“Ma'am, please wait. We'll take your statement.””
Vanessa looked toward the store entrance.
Then toward the parking garage.
Then back at the officers.
Her hands were trembling.
Dad placed his hand on my shoulder.
“Stay with me, sweetheart.””
I nodded.
The officer asked Marcus to step aside so she could review the footage.
As the boy walked with her, Vanessa suddenly looked at Dad.
“You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“What does that mean?””
She stared at the necklace.
Then she looked directly at me.
And for the first time that afternoon, I saw something in her eyes that frightened me more than her anger.
It was desperation.
She leaned toward Dad and whispered:
“Before you let them question me, you need to know what your daughter doesn't know about her mother's last few weeks.””
Dad went completely still.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa glanced at the officers.
Then she said the words that made him take a step backward.
“Claire didn't leave you that necklace by accident. She left something else behind, too. And if you find it, you'll understand why I've spent three years trying to keep Nia away from that storage box.””
The female officer turned immediately.
“Ma'am, what storage box?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Dad looked down at the silver heart in my hand.
May you like
Then he looked at the officers.
And suddenly, the necklace wasn't the only thing they needed to investigate.
