Chapter 7: The Name My Mother Never Wanted Me to Forget
“Whose name?””
My father's question seemed to hang in the kitchen long after he had spoken.
Michael stood beside the table, one hand resting on the closed folder. Vanessa watched him with an expression that was almost triumphant.
I looked from one adult to another.
Nobody seemed willing to tell me what was happening.
Finally, Dad turned toward his attorney.
“Michael, I want an answer.””
Michael removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“Daniel, Claire's trust was established before she passed away. You were named as the primary guardian responsible for Nia's welfare. But there was another person listed as a successor trustee.””
“Who?””
“Her younger brother. Your daughter's uncle, Marcus Carter.””
Dad frowned.
“Claire's brother?””
“Yes.””
I blinked.
I knew Mom had a brother.
I had seen him in photographs, a tall man with a warm smile who sometimes wore a baseball cap backward. But I hadn't seen him since I was very little.
“Uncle Marcus?”” I whispered.
Michael nodded.
“He was named to oversee the trust if you became unable to do so.””
Dad shook his head.
“Why would Claire do that without discussing it with me?””
“Because she wanted someone independent of the household to protect Nia's interests.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Convenient, isn't it?””
Dad turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
She picked up her handbag.
“It means Claire never trusted you to handle anything without her supervision.””
“That isn't what Michael said.””
Vanessa looked at the attorney.
“Ask him why Marcus disappeared.””
Michael's expression tightened.
Dad looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Your wife and her brother had a falling-out. They stopped speaking before she died. Didn't you know?””
Dad slowly turned toward Michael.
“Is that true?””
Michael nodded reluctantly.
“They had a disagreement about the management of certain family assets. Claire believed Marcus was taking unnecessary financial risks. He disagreed with her decisions.””
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because Claire requested that the disagreement remain private.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“And now you understand why that box matters.””
Dad looked at her.
“No. I understand that you're still trying to distract us from the missing property.””
Her smile vanished.
Officer Reynolds stepped forward.
“Mrs. Vanessa, we're going to need you to stop interrupting.””
Vanessa sat down.
Dad reached for his phone.
“I want to speak to Marcus.””
Michael hesitated.
“I have his current contact information.””
“Then call him.””
Michael searched through his phone.
A moment later, he placed the call on speaker.
It rang four times.
Then a man's voice answered.
“Hello?””
“Marcus? It's Michael Reed.””
There was a pause.
“Michael. It's been a while.””
“Yes. I'm calling about Claire's trust.””
Silence.
Then Marcus asked:
“Has something happened to Nia?””
Dad immediately leaned toward the phone.
“This is Daniel. Nia is here with me. She's safe.””
The man's voice softened.
“Daniel. I'm glad to hear that.””
Dad looked surprised.
“You know me?””
“I've heard plenty about you. Claire loved you.””
Dad swallowed.
“Then why haven't you contacted us?””
Marcus sighed.
“Because I was told you didn't want anything to do with me.””
Dad stared at the phone.
“Who told you that?””
Another pause.
“Vanessa.””
Everyone looked toward her.
She stood abruptly.
“That's a lie.””
Marcus continued.
“She called me shortly after Claire's funeral. She said you were trying to rebuild your life and didn't want Claire's family interfering.””
Dad's face hardened.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now.””
I stared at the phone.
“Uncle Marcus?””
The voice immediately changed.
“Nia?””
“It's me.””
“Oh, sweetheart.””
I heard something catch in his throat.
“Are you okay?””
I nodded even though he couldn't see me.
“Yes.””
“Your dad taking good care of you?””
I looked at Dad.
“Yes.””
Marcus breathed out.
“Good. That's all I've wanted.””
I hesitated.
“Why didn't you come see me?””
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then Marcus answered honestly.
“Because I believed someone who shouldn't have spoken for your father. And because I made the mistake of staying away instead of checking for myself.””
I didn't know what to say.
Dad closed his eyes.
Michael explained the missing box and the storage documents.
Marcus became quiet.
Finally, he said:
“Then you need to find the original blue-ribbon box.””
Dad leaned forward.
“We're trying.””
“There's something inside it that Claire specifically wanted Nia to have.””
“What?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Her letter to Nia.””
I felt my heart beating faster.
“Another letter?””
“Yes, sweetheart. A personal one. Your mother wrote it during her final weeks.””
“What's in it?””
“I don't know. Claire sealed it herself. But she told me it was important.””
Dad looked at Michael.
“Did you know about this?””
Michael nodded.
“I knew a letter existed, but I was instructed not to open it.””
Marcus continued.
“There's something else. Claire also kept a small notebook. She wanted me to have a copy of the financial records, but she wanted Nia to receive the original.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“You're all wasting your time.””
Officer Brooks looked at her.
“Please sit down.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“You think Marcus is some innocent hero? He wanted Claire's money just as much as anyone.””
Marcus heard her.
“Vanessa?””
She froze.
His voice became colder.
“I haven't heard your voice in three years. And I can still remember exactly how you sound when you're lying.””
Vanessa's face reddened.
“You don't know anything about what happened in that house.””
“I know Claire asked me to protect Nia. I know you told me Daniel wanted no contact. And I know you disappeared every time I asked to speak to my niece.””
Dad looked down.
He seemed to be realizing how many opportunities had been taken from him without his knowledge.
Marcus continued.
“Daniel, I need you to understand something. Claire didn't create that trust because she expected you to fail. She created it because she knew life could change. She wanted Nia protected no matter who was living in your home.””
Dad nodded slowly.
“I understand.””
“Then find the box. Don't let anyone move it.””
The call ended shortly afterward.
For a while, nobody spoke.
Then Officer Reynolds turned toward the storage representative.
“We'll need the records concerning the unit registered to Gregory Bennett.””
The woman nodded.
“I can provide those.””
Vanessa sat back down.
She looked smaller now.
Not weaker.
Just exposed.
Dad walked to the window.
I followed him.
“Daddy?””
He turned.
“What's wrong, sweetheart?””
“Do you think Uncle Marcus loves me?””
Dad crouched.
“I think he always has.””
“Then why did he stay away?””
Dad looked toward the kitchen table.
“Sometimes adults make mistakes because they believe the wrong people. That doesn't mean the people they love stop mattering.””
I thought about that.
Then I touched the silver heart necklace.
“Mom wanted him to protect me?””
“Yes.””
Dad kissed my forehead.
“And I think we should give him the chance to do that.””
Behind us, Michael was speaking quietly with Officer Reynolds.
The storage representative had opened another folder.
She pointed to a handwritten note attached to the original transfer.
Michael read it.
Then he looked up.
“Daniel?””
Dad turned.
“What now?””
Michael held the page toward him.
“This note is dated three days before Claire died.””
Dad walked back.
He read it once.
Then again.
His expression changed completely.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Michael looked at me.
“Your mother left instructions about what should happen if the brown box was ever opened without your permission.””
Dad stared at the paper.
“And what did she say?””
May you like
Michael answered quietly.
“She wanted us to contact the bank immediately.””
