Chapter 1: The Man She Thought Was Nobody
“You? Who invited you to this party?””
The question sliced through the warm ballroom like a knife.
A few guests turned their heads. Someone stopped laughing near the champagne fountain. A waiter carrying a silver tray slowed down, sensing the tension without knowing its source.
Standing beside a white-clothed cocktail table was a man in a perfectly fitted gray suit. His white shirt was open at the collar, and he held a champagne flute loosely in one hand.
He didn't look offended.
He didn't even look surprised.
He simply turned toward the woman who had just insulted him.
Her name was Vanessa Cole.
She wore a strapless red gown that hugged her figure, diamond earrings that caught the chandelier light, and an expression that suggested the entire room existed to admire her.
Her straight black hair fell neatly over her shoulders.
She looked him up and down.
Then she laughed.
“Seriously, Daniel? I asked you a question.””
Daniel Hayes took a calm sip of champagne.
“I was invited.””
Vanessa raised one perfectly shaped eyebrow.
“By whom?””
“The organizers.””
“Which organizers?””
Daniel glanced toward the stage, where several executives were discussing the evening's program.
“I'm sure you'll find out.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please. You're still doing that mysterious thing?””
Daniel said nothing.
She stepped closer, lowering her voice just enough to make the insult feel personal.
“You look broke. What are you even doing here? You do not belong at a party like this.””
A woman standing nearby pretended to examine her bracelet.
Two men exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Daniel placed his champagne flute on the table.
“I'm here for the event.””
Vanessa laughed again.
“An event? Daniel, this is the annual executive gala for Parallel Group of Industries. Do you even know what that company does?””
“I have a general idea.””
“It's one of the biggest corporations in the country.””
“I know.””
“And the people attending tonight are important people. Investors. Directors. Senior executives.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I'm aware.””
Vanessa shook her head as though she were disappointed in him.
“Some things never change.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Daniel looked at the woman in front of him and remembered a much smaller apartment, a broken kitchen faucet, and a winter evening when Vanessa had cried because she couldn't afford the rent.
He remembered paying for her college tuition.
He remembered working eighteen-hour days while she slept.
He remembered promising her that one day they wouldn't have to worry about money.
And he remembered the night she left.
Three years earlier, Vanessa had stood beside his apartment door with a suitcase.
“I can't keep living like this,” she had told him.
Daniel had looked up from the laptop on his kitchen table.
“Like what?””
“Struggling, Daniel. Always struggling. You're thirty years old, and you still spend every night working on some business idea.””
“It's not just an idea anymore. I have investors interested.””
“You've been saying that for two years.””
“Vanessa, just give me a little more time.””
She had shaken her head.
“I don't want to build a life around a man who might become successful someday.””
He remembered asking her one last question.
“If I lost everything tomorrow, would you still stay?””
She hadn't answered.
Instead, she had picked up her suitcase.
That was the last night they had spoken as a couple.
Now, three years later, she stood in front of him wearing an expensive red gown, mocking the very man she had once expected to become successful.
And Daniel was no longer the struggling entrepreneur she remembered.
He was the founder and majority owner of Parallel Group of Industries.
The company hosting tonight's gala.
The company whose name was displayed in enormous golden letters above the ballroom stage.
But Vanessa didn't know that.
Not yet.
She glanced at her phone, then smiled as if she'd suddenly remembered something wonderful.
“Actually, Daniel, I should thank you.””
“For what?””
“For leaving my life.””
He didn't respond.
Vanessa tilted her head.
“When we broke up, I thought I'd made a mistake. But look at me now.””
She gestured toward her dress.
“Look at where I am.””
Daniel glanced briefly at the gown.
“You look happy.””
“I am.””
She leaned toward him.
“My new boyfriend is the Chief Executive Officer of this company. I finally upgraded.””
Daniel's expression remained unchanged.
“Congratulations.””
Vanessa blinked.
“That's all you have to say?””
“What would you like me to say?””
“Maybe admit that you were wrong about me. Maybe admit that I deserved better.””
Daniel picked up his champagne again.
“I'm glad you found what you were looking for.””
Her smile tightened.
“You know, that's another thing I never liked about you. You always act like you're above everything.””
“No, Vanessa. I just don't see the point in arguing.””
Before she could answer, a familiar voice came from behind her.
“Sweetheart, I've been looking for you.””
A tall man in a black tuxedo approached, his short curls topped with lighter dyed hair. He had an expensive watch, polished shoes, and the confident walk of someone accustomed to being recognized.
His name was Ethan Brooks.
He was thirty-four and had recently been promoted to Chief Executive Officer of Parallel Group's American operations.
Vanessa immediately brightened.
“Ethan! There you are.””
He placed an arm around her waist and kissed her cheek.
Then his eyes moved toward Daniel.
His posture changed.
The confident smile disappeared for a second, replaced by unmistakable respect.
“Good evening, sir.””
Daniel nodded.
“Good evening, Ethan.””
Vanessa looked between them.
Ethan smiled and turned slightly toward her.
“Sir, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend.””
He gestured toward Vanessa.
“Vanessa Cole.””
Vanessa extended her hand, wearing her most polished social smile.
“It's lovely to meet you.””
Daniel looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Likewise.””
Ethan chuckled.
“Sweetheart, there's something else.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“What?””
Ethan looked at Daniel with admiration.
“And sweetheart, meet my boss, the CEO of Parallel Group of Industries.””
The words seemed to drain the warmth from Vanessa's face.
Her fingers froze halfway between them.
Her smile vanished.
For several seconds, she simply stared at Daniel.
Then she looked at the enormous company logo above the stage.
Then back at him.
“Wait…”
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Your boss?””
Ethan frowned slightly.
“Yes. Mr. Daniel Hayes. Our founder and group CEO.””
Daniel picked up his champagne flute.
“Good to see you, Ethan. I'll see you before the announcement.””
“Of course, sir.””
Daniel gave Vanessa one final polite nod.
“Enjoy the evening.””
Then he walked away.
Vanessa remained motionless.
Ethan looked at her.
“Sweetheart? Are you okay?””
She swallowed.
“Ethan…”
“Yes?””
“Why did you call him sir?””
Ethan stared at her as though she had asked whether the chandeliers were made of plastic.
“Because he's the man who owns this company.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“But…”
Ethan lowered his voice.
“Wait. You know Daniel?””
She didn't answer immediately.
And for the first time that evening, Vanessa realized something terrifying.
May you like
She had just humiliated the most powerful man in the room.
And he knew exactly who she was.
