Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Gray Suit
Vanessa couldn't hear the music anymore.
The ballroom was still alive around her. Waiters moved between tables. Cameras flashed near the stage. Guests laughed beneath the chandeliers.
But her attention remained fixed on the man disappearing into the crowd.
Daniel Hayes.
The name kept repeating inside her head.
She had imagined running into him again over the years.
In those fantasies, he was always struggling.
Perhaps he would approach her at a shopping mall, wearing an old jacket. Perhaps he would send her a message, asking how she was doing. Maybe he would finally admit that she had been right to leave.
She had never imagined seeing him as the owner of a billion-dollar company.
“Vanessa?””
Ethan touched her elbow.
She flinched.
“What?””
“I asked if you were okay.””
“I'm fine.””
He studied her face.
“You don't look fine.””
“It's just surprising.””
“What is?””
She forced a laugh.
“Nothing. I just didn't know your boss was so... young.””
Ethan glanced toward Daniel.
“He's forty-one. And he's one of the most respected entrepreneurs in the country.””
“Really?””
Ethan laughed.
“Vanessa, where have you been? His company has been all over the financial news.””
She looked down at her champagne glass.
“I don't really follow business news.””
Ethan adjusted his cufflinks.
“You should. There's a lot to learn from that man.””
Vanessa's stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“Parallel Group was nearly bankrupt before Daniel took control of the company. He bought the distressed assets, rebuilt the management structure, and turned it into a multinational business.””
Vanessa slowly turned toward him.
“He bought the company?””
“Not exactly. He founded the original group and expanded it through acquisitions. He owns the controlling stake.””
Ethan smiled.
“Most people in this room would do anything to have his business instincts.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Does he really have that much money?””
Ethan gave her an amused look.
“Enough that nobody in this ballroom can tell him what to do.””
She looked toward the stage again.
Daniel was speaking to an older gentleman with silver hair. He held his champagne glass in one hand and listened carefully while the other man spoke.
There was nothing flashy about him.
No oversized watch.
No expensive-looking jewelry.
No desperate attempt to attract attention.
That was what unsettled her most.
He looked almost exactly as he had three years earlier.
Except now everyone wanted to stand beside him.
“Ethan,” she said carefully.
“Yes?””
“Do you think he remembers me?””
Ethan frowned.
“Why wouldn't he?””
She hesitated.
“We knew each other a long time ago.””
Ethan's expression changed.
“How long ago?””
“Years.””
“What kind of relationship?””
Vanessa looked toward the ballroom entrance.
“We dated.””
Ethan stopped adjusting his jacket.
“You dated Daniel Hayes?””
She nodded.
“For a while.””
Ethan looked genuinely surprised.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because it was a long time ago.””
“How long?””
“About three years.””
Ethan stared at her for another moment.
Then he gave a short laugh.
“Well, that's interesting.””
Vanessa didn't laugh.
“Is it?””
“Very. You dated the founder of the company I work for, and somehow I never heard about it.””
“It's not something I wanted to discuss.””
Ethan glanced around before speaking again.
“Did you two end badly?””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“We had different priorities.””
“That's not an answer.””
“Ethan, can we please not talk about this?””
He studied her.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.””
But his expression had changed.
And Vanessa knew he was thinking about something she hadn't told him.
Across the room, Daniel stood near a tall arrangement of white flowers, speaking with a woman in a navy evening dress.
Her name was Olivia Grant.
She was the group's chief financial officer and had worked with Daniel since the company had only twelve employees.
She noticed him looking toward the entrance.
“Everything all right?”” she asked.
Daniel nodded.
“Perfectly.””
“That's an interesting word to use when you're staring at someone like that.””
He smiled faintly.
“Do you know the woman in red?””
Olivia followed his gaze.
“Not personally. Vanessa Cole, I believe. She's with Ethan.””
“I see.””
Olivia narrowed her eyes.
“Wait. You know her?””
“We used to date.””
Olivia turned back toward him.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“Please tell me you're joking.””
“I'm not.””
She glanced toward Vanessa again.
“Is that why she was looking at you like she had seen a ghost?””
Daniel took a sip of champagne.
“She was surprised.””
Olivia shook her head.
“After everything you've built, you still have a talent for attracting complicated situations.””
“I'm not attracting anything.””
“Then what would you call that?””
“An unfortunate conversation.””
Olivia laughed quietly.
Before she could say anything else, a man in a navy suit approached.
It was Marcus Reed, the chairman of the group's board.
“Daniel, we need you backstage in fifteen minutes.””
Daniel nodded.
“Is everything ready?””
“Almost. The press team has the announcement prepared.””
“Good.””
Marcus glanced toward Ethan.
“By the way, your new regional CEO has been asking about the acquisition presentation.””
“He's enthusiastic.””
“Very enthusiastic. Almost too enthusiastic.””
Daniel smiled.
“That's why I hired him.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“There is one thing we should discuss before the announcement.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“The acquisition documents.””
Marcus handed him a slim black folder.
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then stopped.
“Who approved this revision?””
Marcus shifted his weight.
“That's what I wanted to discuss.””
Daniel read the signature at the bottom.
Ethan Brooks.
He turned another page.
Then another.
A line of figures appeared in the financial summary.
The acquisition value was higher than the amount Daniel had personally approved.
Not dramatically higher.
Just enough to be suspicious.
“Has this been reviewed by legal?”” Daniel asked.
“Not yet. Ethan submitted the revised version this afternoon.””
“Why?””
“He says the seller requested additional compensation.””
Daniel closed the folder.
“Did we verify that?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not yet.””
Daniel looked across the room.
Ethan was still standing beside Vanessa.
The young executive was laughing with two investors, completely unaware that his name had just become the subject of a serious conversation.
“Keep the original documents,” Daniel said.
Marcus nodded.
“Should I delay the announcement?””
“Not yet. I want to understand what's happening first.””
Olivia stepped closer.
“Is something wrong?””
Daniel handed her the folder.
“Check these numbers against the original approval.””
She opened it and began reading.
Her expression became serious.
“Daniel, this isn't a minor adjustment.””
“I know.””
“Do you want me to bring legal in?””
“Quietly.””
Olivia nodded and walked away.
Meanwhile, Vanessa had started asking Ethan questions.
“Can I ask you something?””
“Of course.””
“Does Daniel have a wife?””
Ethan laughed.
“No.””
“A girlfriend?””
“Not that I know of.””
She looked down at her champagne.
“Interesting.””
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
“Why?””
“Nothing.””
“Vanessa.””
She looked up.
“I was just wondering.””
He leaned closer.
“Don't tell me you're thinking about getting back together with your ex.””
She immediately shook her head.
“Absolutely not.””
“Good.””
He kissed her forehead.
“Because I'm planning to build something with you.””
Vanessa smiled.
But her thoughts were already somewhere else.
She watched Daniel speaking with investors.
She remembered the man who used to sit at their kitchen table, calculating expenses on a cheap laptop.
She remembered telling him that his dreams were unrealistic.
And now he owned the company that employed her boyfriend.
Suddenly, every insult she had delivered earlier seemed to echo through the room.
She looked at Ethan.
“Do you think Daniel likes you?””
Ethan laughed.
“He promoted me six months ago. I'd say he respects my work.””
“Could he fire you?””
“Anyone can be fired, Vanessa. Even me.””
Her fingers tightened around the glass.
“Would he?””
Ethan shrugged.
“Why would he?””
She forced a smile.
“Just asking.””
Then an idea entered her mind.
It was reckless.
But Vanessa had spent years learning that powerful people often responded to confidence.
She could apologize.
She could explain that she hadn't recognized him.
She could remind him that they once shared a life.
Perhaps he would forgive her.
Perhaps he might even offer her something.
She turned toward Ethan.
“Could you introduce me to him again? Properly?””
Ethan frowned.
“I already introduced you.””
“I mean, I'd like to speak with him privately.””
“Why?””
“I think I owe him an apology.””
Ethan considered it.
“That's probably a good idea.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Would you arrange it?””
“I can ask him.””
She touched his arm.
“Thank you, sweetheart.””
Ethan nodded and started toward Daniel.
But just as he approached, Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Olivia.
*We found something. The revised acquisition numbers don't match the seller's records. And there's another problem.*
Daniel read the second line.
His face became still.
*The additional payment is being routed through a company registered to someone connected to Ethan.*
Daniel looked up.
Across the ballroom, Ethan was walking toward him.
And beside the cocktail table, Vanessa was watching with a hopeful smile.
Daniel slipped the phone into his pocket.
“Ethan,” he said when the younger man arrived.
“Sir.””
“We need to talk.””
Ethan's smile faded.
“Of course, sir. Is everything okay?””
Daniel glanced briefly toward Vanessa.
“Not here.””
May you like
Then he turned toward the private corridor.
“Come with me.””
