Chapter 8: The Man Who Sold His Father's Legacy

The emergency board meeting began at 2:00 p.m.

Daniel entered the conference room carrying a single black folder.

Olivia followed him.

Marcus was already seated with three other directors.

Ethan Brooks was not present.

Neither was Richard Cole.

At the far end of the table sat a silver-haired man in a charcoal suit.

Graham Whitmore.

He looked older than Daniel remembered, but his smile was unchanged.

“Daniel,” he said, extending his hand.

Daniel didn't take it.

“Graham.””

Whitmore withdrew his hand.

“I hear we've been having some confusion about the old ownership documents.””

“Confusion?””

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“Someone used my father's name to establish a trust. Someone used that trust to exercise voting rights. And someone transferred money through a company registered to a woman who had no idea what she was signing.””

Whitmore sighed.

“That's a rather dramatic description.””

“It's an accurate one.””

Whitmore opened his briefcase.

“Your father and I had an agreement. You know that.””

“I know you were his business partner.””

“More than that. I helped build the original organization.””

Daniel looked at him.

“So did my father.””

Whitmore smiled.

“Of course.””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Let's discuss the twelve percent voting interest.””

Whitmore leaned back.

“What about it?””

“Why was it transferred into the Cole family trust?””

Whitmore adjusted his cufflinks.

“Your father approved the arrangement.””

“Show me.””

“Those documents are old.””

“Then finding them should be easy.””

Whitmore's smile disappeared slightly.

“Daniel, I don't think you understand the legal structure.””

“I understand enough to know that your signature appears on the original agreement.””

Whitmore glanced at the document.

“And Elizabeth Cole's name appears too.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

“Your father promised her something. He also promised me something.””

“What did he promise you?””

Whitmore looked around the room.

“Protection of my investment.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You were paid for your investment eleven years ago.””

Whitmore shook his head.

“Not completely.””

“You received the agreed settlement.””

“Your father changed the valuation.””

“Because you attempted to remove assets from the company.””

Whitmore's eyes hardened.

“That accusation was never proven.””

“No. My father died before he could finish the investigation.””

The room became silent.

Whitmore closed his briefcase.

“I'm not here to discuss old disagreements.””

“Then why are you here?””

“To protect my legal interests.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Are you connected to Northbridge Capital?””

Whitmore smiled.

“I advise several investment groups.””

“Did you arrange the payment to Richard Cole?””

“No.””

“Did you communicate with Ethan Brooks?””

Whitmore's expression remained composed.

“I know several executives at Parallel Group.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Then you'll have no problem providing your correspondence.””

Whitmore stood.

“I won't be interrogated by a man who inherited a business he barely understood.””

Marcus shifted in his chair.

Daniel remained still.

“You're right about one thing, Graham.””

Whitmore looked at him.

“I inherited a business.””

Daniel pointed toward the company logo on the wall.

“But I built the company that exists today.””

Whitmore said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“And unlike you, I don't confuse ownership with entitlement.””

Whitmore picked up his briefcase.

“This conversation is over.””

“Not quite.””

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“There's one more matter.””

Whitmore stopped.

The document was a copy of a bank transfer.

It showed a payment of six hundred thousand dollars made from a Northbridge-linked account to a private account held by Graham Whitmore.

The date was six months earlier.

The same week the Cole family trust exercised voting rights.

Whitmore looked at the paper.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Where did you get that?””

“That's an interesting question.””

Whitmore closed his briefcase.

“I'll have my lawyer contact you.””

Daniel nodded.

“I look forward to it.””

Whitmore walked out.

Nobody spoke until the door closed.

Then Olivia leaned forward.

“Daniel, if that payment is connected to the voting arrangement, the entire board authorization could be challenged.””

“Then we'll challenge it.””

Marcus looked worried.

“And Ethan?””

Daniel glanced at the empty chair.

“Find him.””

Ethan was in his apartment when the phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Graham Whitmore.

He answered.

“What happened?””

Whitmore's voice was sharp.

“Daniel has the transfer record.””

Ethan stood up.

“What?””

“The six hundred thousand dollars.””

Ethan walked toward the window.

“How?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you tell him?””

Whitmore laughed coldly.

“Why would I tell him anything?””

“Then who gave him the documents?””

Whitmore paused.

“Richard?””

“I don't know.””

“Find out.””

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“Graham, this is getting out of control.””

“It's already out of control.””

“Daniel is investigating me.””

“Then make sure he can't connect you to the trust.””

Ethan stared at the city.

“How?””

“Get the original USB drive.””

“Richard has it.””

“Then take it.””

Ethan hesitated.

“And Vanessa?””

Whitmore's voice became colder.

“She's a liability.””

Ethan swallowed.

“She's my girlfriend.””

“She was useful. Don't confuse usefulness with loyalty.””

The call ended.

Ethan lowered the phone.

For several seconds, he stood motionless.

Then he opened a drawer and removed a small black box.

Inside were several USB drives, an old company seal, and a folded photograph.

He picked up the photograph.

It showed him standing beside Richard Cole outside a restaurant.

On the back was a date.

Six months earlier.

And beneath the date was a handwritten sentence:

*The trust vote must happen before Daniel learns the truth.*

Ethan folded the photograph and placed it back.

Then he called Vanessa.

She answered after the third ring.

“What?””

“Where are you?””

“Why?””

“I need to see you.””

“No.””

“Vanessa, listen to me.””

“You lied to me.””

“I can explain.””

“You used my name.””

“I didn't know Richard would put you on the registration documents.””

“Then why were you emailing him?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Protect me from what?””

“From Daniel.””

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa asked:

“What did Daniel do?””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to receive those shares.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother and Daniel's father made a separate agreement.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What agreement?””

“Your mother was supposed to help Daniel's father keep control of the company during the original restructuring.””

“That doesn't sound illegal.””

“It wasn't.””

“Then what's the problem?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Your mother knew about a hidden ownership transfer.””

Vanessa gripped the phone.

“What transfer?””

“Graham Whitmore was supposed to receive twelve percent of the company. But your mother helped your father—”

He stopped.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“My father?””

Ethan went quiet.

“Vanessa, I need to see you.””

“My father died when I was six.””

“I know.””

“Why did you say your father?””

Ethan exhaled.

“Meet me tonight. I'll explain everything.””

Vanessa looked toward the apartment door.

“No.””

“Vanessa—”

“Tell me what you know about my father.””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Your mother didn't tell you the truth about him.””

Vanessa's chest tightened.

“What truth?””

“Your father was involved in the original company.””

She couldn't speak.

Ethan continued.

“And he didn't die when you were six.””

The phone slipped slightly in her hand.

“What?””

“He disappeared.””

Vanessa stared at the wall.

Her mother had told her that her father died in a car accident before she started school.

There had been no funeral.

No grave.

No photographs after Vanessa's sixth birthday.

Only one framed picture of a smiling man in a brown jacket.

“That's impossible,” she whispered.

“Your mother knew.””

“Why would she lie?””

“Because your father was the person who transferred the original shares.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Where is he?””

Ethan hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you telling me this?””

“Because Daniel is about to uncover everything.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Did you know about my father before we started dating?””

Ethan said nothing.

“Ethan?””

“Yes.””

Her stomach dropped.

“How long?””

“Before we met.””

She closed her eyes.

“So you didn't meet me by accident.””

“Vanessa, it's complicated.””

“You approached me because of my mother?””

“I was trying to understand the trust.””

She laughed through her tears.

“You used me.””

“I didn't mean for it to happen like this.””

“You lied to me from the beginning.””

“Please let me explain.””

Vanessa ended the call.

She sat down on the edge of her bed.

For years, she had believed her father was dead.

Now she was learning that her mother had hidden an entire part of their family history.

And the man she had fallen in love with had known all along.

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, it was an unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Vanessa, my name is Robert Hayes. I am Daniel's uncle. Your father is alive.*

She stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

*And if you want to know why your mother disappeared from the original company records, meet me at the old warehouse tomorrow at noon. Come alone.*

Vanessa looked at the photograph of her mother on the bedside table.

For the first time in twenty years, she wondered whether the woman who had raised her had been protecting her.

Or protecting a secret.

That evening, Daniel received a call from Olivia.

“Daniel, we found Robert Hayes.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

“He's staying at a private residence outside the city.””

“Is he willing to speak?””

“He says he has information about your father's missing shares.””

Daniel stood.

“Bring him here.””

Olivia hesitated.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

“He specifically asked whether Vanessa Cole would be present.””

Daniel looked at the documents on his desk.

“Why?””

Olivia lowered her voice.

“Because he says Vanessa's father is still alive.””

Daniel went completely still.

Then he asked the question that had haunted him since he opened the old inheritance agreement.

“Does he know where my father hid the original shareholder register?””

Olivia was silent.

May you like

Then she answered:

“He says he has it.””
