Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The investigators placed their folders on Richard's kitchen island.

Vanessa remained standing.

Her brother sat down slowly, his hands clasped together.

“Are we under arrest?”” he asked.

The older investigator shook his head.

“Not at this time. We're conducting an inquiry into a financial arrangement involving a corporate acquisition.””

Richard nodded.

“Then I want a lawyer.””

“That's your right.””

The younger investigator turned toward Vanessa.

“Ms. Cole, did you authorize the registration of VC Strategic Holdings?””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

He stared at the floor.

“I signed some documents,” she said.

“What were you told those documents were for?””

“A property investment.””

“Did you understand that you were becoming the company's director?””

“No.””

“Did you receive any money from the company?””

“No.””

“Did you have access to its bank account?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

The investigator wrote something down.

“Who had access?””

Richard answered before she could.

“I managed the account.””

The older investigator looked at him.

“Under whose authorization?””

Richard didn't respond.

“Mr. Cole?””

“I don't remember.””

The investigator closed his folder.

“That's fine. We'll ask your bank.””

Vanessa looked toward the envelope.

“There's something else you should see.””

She handed over the printed note and photograph.

The younger investigator examined them.

“Where did you get these?””

“My brother had them.””

The older investigator picked up the photograph.

His expression changed.

“Do you recognize the man?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's Daniel Hayes.””

“Why would someone photograph him?””

Richard shifted in his chair.

“It's just a photograph.””

The investigator looked at him.

“Then why does it have a note saying he must never see this?””

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa felt a sudden chill.

“Richard, what is this?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“It's nothing.””

“Stop saying that!””

Her voice cracked.

“You told me this was a legitimate business. You used my name. Now investigators are asking about a photograph of my ex-boyfriend. What is happening?””

Richard finally looked at her.

“Daniel wasn't supposed to become involved.””

Vanessa stared.

“Why?””

“Because he knows too much.””

The room became silent.

The older investigator placed the photograph back on the table.

“Mr. Cole, what exactly does that mean?””

Richard looked toward the kitchen window.

For the first time since Vanessa had known him, her brother appeared genuinely frightened.

At Parallel Group headquarters, Daniel sat alone in his office.

The city stretched beneath the floor-to-ceiling windows.

His desk was clean except for a black folder, a laptop, and an old photograph.

The photograph showed him and his father standing outside a small warehouse.

Daniel was twenty-six.

The warehouse had been the first office of the company that would eventually become Parallel Group.

His father had passed away before seeing the business grow.

Daniel touched the edge of the frame.

Then his phone rang.

Olivia.

“Daniel, we have an update.””

“Go ahead.””

“The investigators have contacted Richard Cole. They're questioning him and Vanessa.””

“Good. Did they recover the original registration documents?””

“Yes. There's something else.””

Daniel sat straighter.

“What?””

“Richard's company had another client before the acquisition.””

“Who?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Northbridge Capital.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes. The records show consulting payments from Northbridge dating back almost two years.””

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

“Northbridge was involved in the failed merger attempt.””

“Exactly.””

Two years earlier, Northbridge Capital had attempted to acquire a controlling interest in Parallel Group.

Daniel had rejected the offer.

The proposal had been aggressive, undervalued, and filled with conditions that would have stripped the company of its independence.

After the rejection, Northbridge had quietly approached several senior executives.

Daniel had suspected someone inside his organization was leaking confidential information.

But the investigation had gone nowhere.

“Send me everything,” he said.

Olivia lowered her voice.

“There's another name in the records.””

“Whose?””

“Ethan Brooks.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“Keep going.””

“Ethan received three payments from an account associated with Northbridge. The first was six months before his promotion.””

Daniel turned away from the window.

“Why wasn't this discovered during his background review?””

“The payments were disguised as investment returns.””

“Does he have an investment company?””

“Not officially.””

Daniel walked back to his desk.

“Then who owns the accounts?””

Olivia paused.

“That's where it gets interesting.””

“What?””

“One of the accounts belongs to a company registered in your father's name.””

Daniel went completely still.

“My father's name?””

“Yes.””

“That's impossible. He died years ago.””

“I know.””

Daniel looked at the photograph on his desk.

His father had been gone for eleven years.

Nobody had the authority to use his name.

“Send me the registration.””

Olivia did.

Daniel opened the attachment.

The company was registered under a name he had never seen before.

*Hayes Family Strategic Trust.*

The listed trustee was Richard Cole.

Daniel read the document twice.

Then he looked at the date.

The company had been established five months earlier.

“Olivia?””

“Yes?””

“Contact our external legal team. I want an independent review of every account connected to this trust.””

“Understood.””

“And don't tell Ethan.””

“I won't.””

Daniel ended the call.

He sat down slowly.

For the first time in years, the investigation felt personal.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not because of Ethan.

But because someone had used his father's identity to move money through a company bearing his family name.

He opened an old encrypted archive on his laptop.

It contained scanned records from the early years of Parallel Group.

He searched for his father's name.

Several files appeared.

One caught his attention.

A scanned letter dated eleven years earlier.

It had been written shortly before his father's death.

Daniel opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

His father's final paragraph read:

*Daniel, there are people who will try to use our family name when the business becomes valuable. Never assume that someone is loyal because they were there in the beginning. Trust the documents.

Trust the evidence. And never let anyone convince you that protecting your family means protecting their secrets.*

Daniel leaned back.

He remembered his father saying something similar during his final hospital visit.

At the time, Daniel had thought it was simply advice about business.

Now he wondered whether his father had known something.

At Richard's apartment, the investigators had finished their first round of questions.

Vanessa stood near the window, staring at the photograph.

Richard sat at the kitchen island.

“Why did you use my name?”” she asked.

He rubbed his face.

“I needed a clean registration.””

“You could have used your own.””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because I had already been flagged by another company.””

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

“Flagged for what?””

“An old financial dispute.””

“Richard!””

He stood abruptly.

“Do you think I wanted this to happen?””

“You brought this into my life!””

“I was trying to help you.””

“Help me?””

Vanessa pointed at the documents.

“You made me the director of a company receiving stolen money!””

Richard lowered his voice.

“The money wasn't stolen when it was transferred.””

“Then why is Daniel investigating?””

“Because he doesn't trust anyone.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“No. Because you lied.””

Richard looked away.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said something that changed the conversation completely.

“Do you remember the night Daniel proposed to you?””

Vanessa frowned.

“Why are you bringing that up?””

“Because I remember.””

She looked at him.

Richard continued.

“You came to my apartment crying. You told me he wanted you to wait another year while he tried to secure his investors.””

Vanessa nodded.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Richard walked toward the kitchen drawer and removed a small USB drive.

“Daniel wasn't just trying to secure investors.””

Vanessa stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Something I found in the old company records.””

“Richard, what are you talking about?””

He placed the USB drive on the table.

“Your ex-boyfriend didn't tell you the whole story about why his first company almost collapsed.””

Vanessa looked at the drive.

“Why would you have his company records?””

Richard swallowed.

“Because Northbridge paid me to find them.””

Her heart began pounding.

“Paid you?””

“Before Parallel Group became what it is today, there was a business partner who disappeared with money.””

Vanessa looked toward the investigators.

They were speaking quietly in the hallway.

She lowered her voice.

“What happened?””

Richard looked directly at her.

“Daniel's father was blamed for it.””

Vanessa felt the room tilt.

“His father?””

Richard nodded.

“Northbridge wanted those records because they believed Daniel inherited something from his father. Something that could destroy his company if it became public.””

Vanessa stared at the USB drive.

“What's on it?””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Proof that someone inside Daniel's family helped Northbridge.””

Before she could respond, Richard's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a number he had saved under a single letter.

*E.*

Richard looked at Vanessa.

Then he answered.

“What?””

A familiar voice came through.

“Did you give them the documents?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Good. Because Daniel has just requested the original trust records.””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“How do you know that?””

The voice became colder.

“Because someone inside his office is still working for us.””

Richard's face went pale.

The call ended.

Vanessa slowly stepped backward.

“Richard…”

He didn't look at her.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

“What?””

Richard picked up the USB drive.

“The company wasn't created to receive the acquisition money.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Then why was it created?””

Richard looked toward the hallway.

Then he whispered:

“To transfer ownership of something Daniel's father left behind.””

At that exact moment, Vanessa's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

It contained one photograph.

Daniel Hayes, standing beside his father outside the original warehouse.

Beneath it was a message:

*If you want to know why Daniel really became CEO, ask him what happened to his father's missing shares.*

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*And ask him why your name was written into the original inheritance agreement.*

Her fingers began to tremble.

Because suddenly, the suspicious company, the missing money, and the photograph of Daniel were no longer separate mysteries.

May you like

They were connected by something that had started long before Vanessa and Daniel ever met.

And she might have been part of it from the beginning.
