Chapter 7: The Woman Named in His Father's Will

Vanessa read the message three times.

*Ask him why your name was written into the original inheritance agreement.*

Her hands were shaking.

She looked at Richard, who was still holding the USB drive.

“What does this mean?””

Richard didn't answer.

“Richard, why is my name in Daniel's father's inheritance agreement?””

He placed the USB drive on the kitchen island.

“Because your mother knew his father.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?””

“Before you were born, your mother worked for a small investment firm. Daniel's father was one of its major clients.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“My mother was a receptionist.””

“That's what she told everyone.””

“Richard, stop.””

“She handled financial documents. She knew where certain assets were held. And she was involved in a business arrangement with Daniel's father.””

Vanessa sank into a chair.

Her mother had died when Vanessa was nineteen.

She remembered a quiet woman who worked long hours, kept old documents in labeled boxes, and rarely discussed her past.

She had never mentioned Daniel Hayes.

Not once.

“Why would my mother's name be in his father's will?””

Richard pulled out another document.

“Because your mother was supposed to receive something.””

“What?””

“A percentage of the original company's shares.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“How much?””

Richard hesitated.

“Seven percent.””

She laughed nervously.

“That's impossible.””

“It's in the documents.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

“Because the agreement was never finalized.””

Vanessa looked down at the document.

A name appeared beneath the heading.

*Beneficiary: Elizabeth Cole.*

Her mother's name.

Underneath it was a handwritten note.

Upon the successful completion of the original investment agreement, seven percent of the founder's retained shares shall be transferred to Elizabeth Cole or her legal heirs.

Vanessa read it again.

“Legal heirs?””

Richard nodded.

“You.””

She pushed the document away.

“No. This makes no sense.””

“Your mother and Daniel's father were business partners.””

“Were they having an affair?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa stood.

“I don't want any part of this.””

“It's too late for that.””

She turned toward him.

“Why?””

“Because the trust was created to move those shares.””

Vanessa froze.

“What trust?””

“The Hayes Family Strategic Trust.””

She looked at the USB drive.

“You said that was created to transfer something Daniel's father left behind.””

Richard nodded.

“His original shares.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Who owns them now?””

Richard looked at her.

“Technically, nobody has established the final ownership.””

“And Daniel?””

“He believes they're part of his father's estate.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Why would anyone want them?””

Richard gave her a tired smile.

“Because seven percent of a company worth billions is worth a fortune.””

She stared at him.

Then she understood something.

Her name hadn't been placed on the company documents randomly.

Someone had needed a legal heir.

Someone had needed her mother's name.

And someone had been using Vanessa as a convenient bridge between two families.

“Who knows about this?”” she asked.

“Northbridge.””

“Ethan?””

Richard nodded.

“Probably.””

Vanessa pressed her fingers against her temples.

“Does Daniel know?””

Richard didn't answer.

That was enough.

At Parallel Group headquarters, Daniel stood in the middle of his office with the original inheritance documents spread across his desk.

Olivia had arrived with two lawyers.

Marcus sat near the window.

The atmosphere was tense.

“Read the final page again,” Daniel said.

One of the lawyers adjusted his glasses.

“The document identifies Elizabeth Cole as a conditional beneficiary of seven percent of the original founder's retained shares.””

Daniel nodded.

“And what makes the agreement conditional?””

“The original investment contribution had to be verified. The company was required to reach a specified financial milestone before the transfer could take place.””

“Was that milestone reached?””

“Yes. Eleven years ago.””

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“Then why were the shares never transferred?””

Olivia turned another page.

“The original transfer was suspended following a dispute between your father and another shareholder.””

“Who?””

“Graham Whitmore.””

Daniel's face tightened.

He knew that name.

Graham Whitmore had been his father's business partner during the company's earliest years.

He had left the organization shortly before Daniel's father died.

For years, Daniel had believed Whitmore had simply walked away after a disagreement over expansion strategy.

“Is Whitmore still alive?”” Daniel asked.

Marcus nodded.

“Very much alive. He currently serves as a senior adviser to Northbridge Capital.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Of course he does.””

Olivia placed another document on the desk.

“There's more. We traced the registration of the Hayes Family Strategic Trust.””

Daniel picked it up.

The trustee was Richard Cole.

The beneficiary structure was complicated.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa Cole.

Daniel slowly lowered the paper.

“Why her?””

“We're not sure,” Olivia replied.

“Could she have known about the inheritance?””

“Possibly. But we have no evidence she understood the arrangement.””

Daniel walked toward the window.

For a long moment, he watched the traffic below.

Then he turned.

“Find the original shareholder register.””

Marcus nodded.

“Already requested.””

“And locate Graham Whitmore.””

Olivia frowned.

“Do you want to meet him?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Today.””

The lawyer cleared his throat.

“Daniel, I would advise caution. If Northbridge is involved, there may be additional parties.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That's exactly why I want to know who's involved.””

At 11:40 a.m., Vanessa arrived at Parallel Group headquarters.

She wore a black blazer over a simple dress.

Her hair was tied back.

She looked nothing like the woman who had entered the ballroom the previous night, confident that her boyfriend's title made her untouchable.

The receptionist looked up.

“Good morning. How may I help you?””

“I need to see Daniel Hayes.””

“Do you have an appointment?””

“No. But it's important.””

The receptionist checked the executive calendar.

“I'm sorry. Mr. Hayes is in a meeting.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Please tell him Vanessa Cole is here.””

The receptionist typed something.

Then she looked up.

“Please take a seat.””

Five minutes later, Olivia appeared.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa stood immediately.

“Thank you for seeing me.””

“Daniel can give you ten minutes.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's fine.””

Olivia led her through the executive corridor.

The office was enormous but understated.

A dark wooden desk stood near the windows. Shelves held business awards, framed photographs, and several books.

Daniel stood beside the desk.

He looked up when Vanessa entered.

“Vanessa.””

“Daniel.””

Olivia closed the door.

“I'll be outside.””

Vanessa remained standing.

“I need to ask you something.””

“Go ahead.””

She placed the printed message on his desk.

“Is my mother's name in your father's inheritance agreement?””

Daniel looked at the message.

His expression changed slightly.

“Where did you get this?””

“Richard.””

Daniel studied her face.

“What did he tell you?””

“That my mother was supposed to receive seven percent of your father's original shares.””

Daniel didn't respond.

“Is it true?”” she asked.

“Yes.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Your mother and my father had a business arrangement. The agreement was never finalized because of a dispute over ownership.””

“Did they know each other personally?””

Daniel paused.

“They worked together for years. My father trusted her.””

Vanessa looked down.

“My mother never mentioned him.””

“My father never mentioned you.””

She raised her eyes.

“Then why am I listed as the beneficiary?””

“Because your mother passed away before the transfer could be completed.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Do I own those shares?””

Daniel leaned against his desk.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

She stared at him.

“How much money are we talking about?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“Enough that several people appear willing to commit fraud to get control of them.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“Richard?””

“Possibly.””

“Ethan?””

“Possibly.””

She looked toward the door.

“Daniel, I swear I didn't know.””

He studied her.

“I believe you may not have known the entire arrangement.””

“That's not the same as believing me.””

“No. It isn't.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Do you hate me?””

Daniel looked genuinely surprised.

“Why would I?””

“Because of how I treated you.””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said:

“Vanessa, I stopped being angry about our relationship a long time ago.””

She wiped her cheek.

“I was cruel.””

“Yes.””

“I thought you would never become anything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You thought I wasn't worth waiting for.””

She lowered her head.

“I was wrong.””

He nodded.

“That's something you had to discover yourself.””

Vanessa looked up again.

“Can we start over?””

Daniel shook his head gently.

“We can be honest about what happened. But we can't pretend we were never those people.””

She nodded.

Then she took another paper from her purse.

“I found this at Richard's apartment.””

Daniel accepted it.

It was a copy of an old shareholder register.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

A signature appeared beneath his father's name.

*Graham Whitmore.*

Daniel's expression hardened.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“What is it?””

Daniel turned the document toward her.

“Your mother wasn't the only person named in this agreement.””

Another name appeared beneath Elizabeth Cole's.

*Graham Whitmore — 12% conditional voting interest.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“And according to this document, Whitmore transferred his interest to someone else eleven years ago.””

“Who?””

Daniel checked the final line.

The name had been covered by a black strip in the copy.

But beneath it, someone had written a handwritten note.

*The original beneficiary is now protected by the Cole family trust.*

Daniel looked toward the office door.

“Olivia!””

The door opened immediately.

“Yes?””

“Find out who currently controls the trust.””

Olivia took the document.

She scanned the page.

Then her eyes widened.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She looked at him.

“The trustee is Richard Cole.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“No. You don't understand.””

She turned the page.

“The trust has already exercised voting rights in a previous shareholder meeting.””

Daniel stared at her.

“When?””

Olivia checked the date.

“Six months ago.””

The room fell silent.

Vanessa slowly stood.

“Daniel?””

He looked at her.

For the first time since she had walked into his office, he appeared genuinely unsettled.

May you like

“Someone has already voted using those shares.””

And that meant someone might have been controlling a portion of Parallel Group without Daniel knowing.
