Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Photograph

I stared at the picture on my phone until my eyes started to hurt.

Mia was standing beside a woman outside a coffee shop.

The woman looked familiar.

Not because I had met her.

Because I had seen her face before.

In the old photograph.

The same woman who stood beside my mother and father years ago.

My fingers went numb.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

The second he saw my expression, he knew.

“What did she send you?””

I turned the phone around.

Dad’s face lost all color.

Rachel stepped closer.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that scared me more than the picture itself.

“Dad, who is she?””

He looked down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Her name is Vanessa.””

The name meant nothing.

But the fear in his voice meant everything.

“What does she have to do with my mother?””

Dad sat down slowly.

“Aaliyah, there are things I should have told you years ago.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Apparently there are a lot of those.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t take them back.

For years, I had lived in a house where everyone thought protecting me meant keeping me in the dark.

I was tired of being the last person to know my own life.

Dad looked at the photograph again.

“Vanessa was someone your mother knew.””

“How?””

He took a deep breath.

“Before I met your mother, Vanessa and I were friends.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Friends?””

Dad nodded.

“Nothing more.””

“But she was there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Dad looked at me.

“Because she was the reason your mother was afraid.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Rachel.

Then back at Dad.

“What did she do?””

Dad rubbed his hands together.

A habit he had whenever he was trying to find the right words.

“Vanessa was always jealous of your mother.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother had everything she wanted.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

Dad’s voice became heavier.

“It doesn’t.””

He looked toward my bedroom window.

“Your mother was kind. People trusted her. She had a way of making everyone around her feel important.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She wanted that.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“She always wanted what your mother had.””

I looked at the photo again.

“But why is she with Mia?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my stomach dropped.

Because suddenly, I understood.

“Mia knows her.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

I stood up.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Dad, someone who hated me enough to destroy my dress somehow found a woman connected to my mother’s past, and you don’t know?””

He closed his eyes.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just acceptance.

“I failed you.””

My anger softened for one second.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, it wasn’t a photo.

It was a video.

I pressed play.

Mia appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in a car.

Beside her was Vanessa.

Mia looked directly into the camera.

“Aaliyah, you always thought Dad chose you because you were better than me.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“But you don’t know the truth.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Your father made a promise to your mother.””

Mia smiled.

“A promise he broke.””

The video ended.

I looked at Dad.

“What promise?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled with pain.

Then he said the words I never expected.

“I promised your mother I would never let Vanessa come near you.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Dad looked at the door.

Like he expected someone to appear.

“Because Vanessa tried to take you away from us.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What does that mean?””

Dad reached for the phone.

But before he could explain, we heard a loud crash downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Rachel whispered:

“She’s here.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door opened.

And a woman’s voice echoed through the house.

“David.””

Dad stood immediately.

His face was pale.

Because the person standing downstairs…

May you like

Was the same woman in the photograph.

Vanessa.
