Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Was Chosen

The room became completely silent.

I looked at Mia.

Then at Dad.

Then back at the papers in my hand.

“What did you say?””

Mia walked slowly into the room.

For once, she wasn’t smiling.

“You heard me.””

Dad’s voice was low.

“Mia, go upstairs.””

“No.””

Her eyes were fixed on me.

“She deserves to know.””

I hated that phrase.

Because every time someone said it, my world fell apart.

I held up the letter.

“What does she mean?””

Dad looked at me.

“Aaliyah…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Answer me.””

Rachel moved closer.

“Let David explain.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he loves you.””

“Then why did he hide this?””

Nobody answered.

Dad sat down.

His shoulders looked heavier than I had ever seen.

“The adoption papers were not about you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“They were about Vanessa.””

I looked confused.

Dad continued.

“Before I met your mother, Vanessa had a daughter.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked away.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Dad swallowed.

“Vanessa’s daughter was taken into foster care after Vanessa couldn’t provide a stable home.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“I was young.””

“You made choices.””

“You abandoned me!””

Dad looked at her.

“You disappeared.””

The anger between them was years old.

Not something created tonight.

Something buried.

I looked at Mia.

“Why do you know about this?””

Her face changed.

For the first time, I saw something besides jealousy.

Fear.

“Because Vanessa found me.””

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

My stomach dropped.

A few months.

The same time Mia started acting worse.

The same time she began targeting me.

“She told you these things?””

Mia looked down.

“She told me Dad always chose you.””

“That’s why you did all this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was angry.””

“You destroyed my graduation dress.””

“I know.””

“You threatened me.””

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Mia whispered:

“I thought if everyone saw you differently, I wouldn’t feel invisible anymore.””

I stared at her.

For years, I had waited for an apology.

But hearing it now didn’t erase what she had done.

Dad stood.

“Mia, you need to understand something.””

She looked at him.

“Jealousy doesn’t give you permission to hurt people.””

She nodded.

Tears fell down her face.

“I know.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Nobody expected it.

“You’re all acting like this is some beautiful family moment.””

Dad looked at her.

“Leave.””

“No.””

She pointed at me.

“She still doesn’t know the biggest part.””

I felt exhausted.

“What now?””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“Tell her.””

Dad didn’t move.

“Tell her why your mother chose adoption.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Dad looked at me.

Then he finally said:

“Because your mother wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“From her.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

Dad’s voice was firm.

“Your mother discovered Vanessa had been following our family.””

I felt cold.

“She was watching us?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Dad looked at me.

“Because she believed you should have been hers.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“I lost everything.””

Dad shook his head.

“You lost control.””

She stepped forward.

“You stole my daughter’s place.””

Nobody spoke.

Then I understood.

Vanessa wasn’t angry because of Dad.

She wasn’t angry because of my mother.

She was angry because she believed I had the life her daughter should have had.

And Mia…

Mia had believed the same thing.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

A video.

The date was eighteen years ago.

My mother was sitting in a hospital room.

Holding a baby.

Me.

Her voice was weak.

But clear.

“If you’re watching this, Aaliyah, I need you to know something.””

I pressed play.

Everyone gathered around.

My mother looked into the camera.

And said:

“I chose you.””

I covered my mouth.

Then she continued.

“Not because you needed saving.””

A pause.

“But because you were already my daughter.””

The video ended.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

Nobody had anything to say.
