Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Buried

Vanessa stood in the living room like she belonged there.

Like she had walked through that door a hundred times.

But Dad looked at her like he was seeing a ghost.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Her smile was small.

“You always say that.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re Vanessa?””

She turned toward me.

And for a moment, her expression softened.

“Aaliyah.””

The way she said my name made me uncomfortable.

Like she knew me.

Like she had known me before I even knew myself.

“Don’t say my name like you know me.””

Her smile disappeared.

“I do know you.””

“No, you don’t.””

Dad stepped between us.

“Leave.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“Still protecting her.””

“She doesn’t need to hear this.””

“She deserves the truth.””

I looked at Dad.

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Your father has spent eighteen years making himself the hero.””

“Stop.””

“But heroes have secrets too.””

Dad’s voice became sharp.

“Enough.””

Vanessa pulled a small envelope from her purse.

My heart sank.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

“What is that?””

She looked at me.

“Something your mother wrote.””

Dad immediately moved forward.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Your wife gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

“My mother?””

“No.””

Dad’s face changed.

“Don’t lie.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Tell her.””

I stared at Dad.

“What is she talking about?””

He looked broken.

“Aaliyah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more.””

I stepped away.

“I want the truth.””

Vanessa opened the envelope.

“Your mother wrote this before she died.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“She never sent it.””

“Because she didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because she knew the truth would destroy your family.””

I felt sick.

“What truth?””

She looked at Dad.

Then back at me.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who made mistakes.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Vanessa, stop.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Still defending them?””

“You’re twisting everything.””

“No.””

Vanessa smiled.

“I’m finally telling the story.””

She turned to me.

“Your mother discovered your father had been hiding something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“He knew about me.””

Dad interrupted.

“I knew she was dangerous.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Dangerous?””

“You threatened my family.””

“I loved you.””

The words hit the room like a storm.

I looked at Dad.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You never told her?””

Dad said nothing.

“You never told her that before your mother, I was the person who thought I had a future with you?””

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Your father chose your mother. And I lost everything.””

I shook my head.

“So you’re saying you hurt my mother because she married Dad?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I’m saying your mother wasn’t innocent either.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“She knew I loved David.””

Dad looked furious.

“She knew nothing.””

“She knew enough.””

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He looked away.

That was the moment I realized something.

There was a piece of the story even he was afraid to say.

Vanessa placed the envelope on the table.

“Read it.””

I didn’t move.

“Why would I trust you?””

“Because your mother wrote it.””

Dad reached for the envelope.

Vanessa stopped him.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“This time, Aaliyah gets to choose.””

I picked it up.

The handwriting was different from the first letter.

More rushed.

More emotional.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my hands shake.

*David, if anything happens to me, you need to know that Vanessa found out about the adoption papers.*

I stopped.

Adoption papers.

I looked at Dad.

“What adoption papers?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mia’s voice came from the doorway.

“I told you.””

Everyone turned.

She was standing there.

May you like

Holding another folder.

“You’re not who you think you are.””
