Chapter 2: The Man Who Walked Through the Glass Doors
The black vehicle stopped directly outside the hotel's main entrance.
Two security officers stepped out first.
One opened the rear passenger door.
A tall Black man in his late fifties emerged, wearing a perfectly tailored navy suit, a white shirt, and a dark silk tie.
His name was Marcus Brooks.
His hair was closely trimmed, with silver beginning to show at the temples. His expression was calm, but his eyes were sharp.
He wasn't the kind of man who needed to raise his voice to command attention.
Behind him, another man stepped out carrying a leather document case.
Then a woman in a charcoal business suit emerged from the front passenger seat, already speaking into her phone.
Marcus adjusted his jacket.
“Has the conference started?”” he asked.
The woman nodded.
“Yes, sir. The opening session begins in forty minutes.””
“Good. Tell them I'll be delayed.””
“Understood.””
Marcus looked toward the hotel entrance.
“Where's my daughter?””
“Inside, sir.””
He nodded once.
Then he walked through the automatic glass doors.
Inside, Vanessa was still talking.
“I don't care who she called. If every guest started bringing family members here whenever they had a disagreement, this place would become a circus.””
Richard nodded.
“I'm handling it.””
Vanessa adjusted her diamond bracelet.
“Good. I have a meeting with the regional partners at eleven. I don't want this situation interfering with my schedule.””
Then Marcus entered the lobby.
Danielle saw him first.
“Daddy.””
Marcus stopped.
His eyes moved from his daughter's face to the baby in her arms.
Then he noticed the red mark on her cheek.
Something changed in his expression.
He crossed the marble floor without saying another word.
“Danielle.””
She tried to smile.
“I'm okay.””
Marcus gently touched her shoulder.
“Let me see.””
“Daddy, please. Amara is fine.””
He leaned closer to inspect her cheek.
“Who did this?””
Danielle looked toward Vanessa.
“She did.””
Marcus slowly turned.
Vanessa stood with her arms crossed.
Richard stepped forward.
“Sir, perhaps we can discuss this privately.””
Marcus didn't look at him.
“Did you ask my daughter whether she was hurt?””
Richard hesitated.
“Sir, there seems to have been a misunderstanding involving another guest.””
Marcus finally turned toward him.
“A misunderstanding?””
“Yes, sir. There was an incident near the reception area, and we're attempting to resolve it.””
Marcus looked at the red mark on Danielle's face.
“That's an interesting way to describe someone striking a woman holding a newborn.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Oh, please. I barely touched her.””
Marcus studied her.
“Did you slap my daughter?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“She walked into me.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Richard quickly interrupted.
“Sir, we're reviewing the situation. We don't want to make assumptions.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Excellent. Then let's review the security footage.””
Richard's fingers tightened around his tablet.
“Unfortunately, our security department may need some time to retrieve that.””
Marcus glanced toward the ceiling.
“Those cameras appear to be operational.””
“Yes, sir, but access is restricted.””
“Then call whoever has access.””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa gave him a tiny shake of her head.
Marcus noticed.
He turned toward his assistant.
“Evelyn, please contact the hotel's corporate compliance office. Tell them I want the footage from the main atrium preserved immediately.””
Evelyn opened her document case.
“Of course.””
Vanessa let out a short laugh.
“Corporate compliance? Who exactly do you think you are?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I'm Danielle's father.””
Vanessa smirked.
“I gathered that.””
“And who are you?””
“Vanessa Whitmore.””
Marcus waited.
She seemed annoyed that he didn't react to the name.
“I'm a senior consultant with Whitmore Hospitality Advisory. I work with important people in this industry.””
Marcus gave a small nod.
“I see.””
Vanessa pointed toward Danielle.
“Your daughter caused this entire situation. She came into a restricted area and nearly knocked me over.””
Danielle immediately shook her head.
“I was walking to the reception desk. There wasn't a restricted-area sign.””
Marcus raised one hand gently.
“Baby, let me handle this.””
He turned back to Richard.
“Are you the manager?””
“Yes. Richard Cole.””
“Did you witness the incident?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“I arrived after the initial contact.””
“Did you interview my daughter?””
“I spoke to both parties.””
“Did you ask any witnesses what they saw?””
Richard hesitated.
“We were trying to prevent the situation from escalating.””
Marcus glanced at the crowd.
Several people were still watching.
One young woman held her phone close to her chest.
An older businessman stood near a marble column.
A hotel employee was quietly speaking to a security guard.
Marcus noticed all of them.
“Then perhaps we should ask the witnesses.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“There is no need to turn this into a public spectacle.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You made it public when you struck a woman in the middle of this lobby.””
Vanessa's face reddened.
“I said I barely touched her!””
Danielle spoke quietly.
“You slapped me hard enough to knock me down.””
Marcus turned toward his daughter.
“Did anyone help you?””
Danielle shook her head.
“The manager told me to leave.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“Is that true?””
Richard straightened his jacket.
“I was attempting to de-escalate a disturbance.””
“You saw a mother sitting on the floor with a crying newborn, and your solution was to remove her?””
“Sir, we have procedures.””
“Then I would like to read them.””
Richard opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Look, Mr. Brooks, I don't know what kind of money you have, but you can't walk into a hotel and start ordering people around.””
Marcus remained still.
“That's correct.””
She seemed satisfied.
Then he continued.
“But I can ask why an employee treated my daughter this way. I can request evidence. And I can insist that the people involved be held accountable.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Your daughter is obviously exaggerating.””
At that moment, the young woman near the marble column finally stepped forward.
“Excuse me.””
Everyone turned.
She looked nervous, but she raised her phone.
“I recorded part of it.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Richard stared at the device.
“What?””
The young woman swallowed.
“My name is Olivia. I was walking toward the conference registration desk. I saw the woman in pink slap the mother.””
Vanessa immediately pointed at her.
“You didn't see the whole thing!””
Olivia shook her head.
“I saw enough.””
“Put that phone away!””
Olivia took a step backward.
“No. I think the video should be seen.””
Marcus approached her.
“Thank you for speaking up. What's your last name?””
“Parker.””
“Miss Parker, would you be comfortable sharing that recording with the appropriate investigators?””
She nodded.
“Yes, sir.””
Evelyn approached with a business card.
“We can arrange a secure copy. You won't need to hand over your original phone.””
Olivia looked relieved.
“Thank you.””
Vanessa turned toward Richard.
“Are you seriously allowing this?””
Richard's face was pale.
“Miss Whitmore, please calm down.””
“Calm down? She's recording me!””
Marcus looked at the manager.
“Interesting. A few minutes ago, you seemed comfortable telling my daughter to leave. Now you're asking someone else to calm down.””
Richard swallowed.
“Sir, I'm trying to maintain order.””
Marcus nodded.
“Then let's maintain it properly.””
He turned toward Danielle.
“Do you want to sit down?””
She looked at the baby.
“Yes. Amara needs feeding.””
Marcus immediately pulled a chair away from a nearby seating area.
“Then that's what we're doing.””
He helped Danielle sit.
A hotel employee hurried over with a bottle of water.
“I'm sorry, ma'am. Can I get you anything else?””
Danielle looked at her.
“Could you please bring a clean blanket for my daughter?””
“Absolutely.””
Vanessa watched the scene with growing frustration.
She leaned toward Richard.
“You need to get them out of here.””
Richard whispered back.
“I don't think that's a good idea anymore.””
“What do you mean?””
He glanced at Marcus.
“Something about this isn't right.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Because he has security?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Because the general manager just called me.””
Vanessa frowned.
“Why?””
Richard looked toward the entrance.
The hotel's general manager had just appeared, walking quickly from the executive elevators.
He was accompanied by two senior administrators.
The general manager, Thomas Reed, looked straight at Marcus.
Then he stopped several feet away.
His face changed.
“Mr. Brooks?””
Marcus stood.
“Good morning, Thomas.””
Thomas looked from Marcus to Danielle.
Then his eyes landed on the mark across her cheek.
His expression hardened.
“Sir, I wasn't informed that you were arriving this morning.””
Marcus glanced at his daughter.
“I wasn't planning to make an entrance.””
Thomas turned toward Richard.
“What happened?””
Richard began speaking immediately.
“Mr. Reed, there was an altercation between two visitors. I was attempting to manage the situation, but—”
Marcus interrupted.
“Your manager told my daughter to leave after she was slapped.””
Thomas stared at Richard.
Then at Vanessa.
“Who slapped her?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus slowly reached into his jacket and removed a black business card.
He handed it to Thomas.
The general manager looked down.
His eyebrows rose.
He read the name twice.
Then he looked up.
“Mr. Brooks...””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“What is this? Why is everyone acting like he's somebody important?””
Thomas didn't answer her.
Instead, he looked at Marcus and asked quietly:
“Sir, does the hotel ownership group know you're here?””
Marcus put his hands into his pockets.
“They will shortly.””
Thomas's face lost its color.
Because Marcus Brooks wasn't simply an angry father who had arrived to defend his daughter.
May you like
He was connected to the very people who controlled the hotel's future.
And Thomas suddenly realized that the incident in the lobby might be the smallest part of the problem.
