Chapter 9: The Charity Dinner Nobody Was Ready For
The Brooks Foundation charity dinner was scheduled to begin at seven o'clock.
By six thirty, the ballroom was filled with donors, executives, community leaders, and representatives from several nonprofit organizations.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the room.
Round tables were covered in white linen.
A stage stood at the far end, decorated with the foundation's gold emblem.
The event had originally been planned as a celebration of the foundation's new education and employment initiatives.
But Marcus Brooks had spent most of the afternoon reviewing documents that suggested someone had been attempting to take control of his business using his daughter's identity.
He had decided the dinner would continue.
Not because he wanted to celebrate.
Because he wanted answers.
Danielle stood in front of the mirror in her father's private suite.
She wore a simple dark green dress.
Her hair was neatly arranged, and Amara was sleeping in a small portable bassinet beside the sofa.
Danielle touched the faint mark on her cheek.
It was still visible.
Marcus entered carrying his jacket.
“You look beautiful.””
She smiled faintly.
“Thank you.””
He noticed her expression.
“Are you nervous?””
“A little.””
“About seeing your uncle?””
She nodded.
“Dad, I don't want a scene tonight.””
Marcus sat beside her.
“Neither do I.””
“What if he really did this?””
Marcus looked toward the bassinet.
“Then we'll deal with the truth.””
Danielle lowered her eyes.
“I keep thinking about Grandma.””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Your grandmother believed family should never be used as an excuse for bad behavior.””
Danielle nodded.
“She also believed people could change.””
“She did.””
Marcus paused.
“But changing requires admitting what you've done.””
A knock came at the door.
Evelyn entered.
“Sir, the guests are arriving.””
Marcus stood.
“Has Anthony arrived?””
“Yes.””
“Is Gregory there?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“He arrived fifteen minutes ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“His access was suspended.””
“He isn't attending as a regional executive. He's listed as Anthony's personal guest.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Of course he is.””
Evelyn continued.
“Vanessa Whitmore is also here.””
Danielle looked up.
“What?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She arrived with a representative from her consulting firm.””
Marcus checked his watch.
“Interesting.””
He looked toward Danielle.
“You don't have to stay if you don't feel comfortable.””
Danielle stood.
“No. I'm going.””
She looked at her father.
“I want to hear what they have to say.””
Marcus nodded.
“Then we'll hear them.””
They entered the ballroom together.
Several guests greeted Marcus.
A board member approached and shook his hand.
“Marcus, glad you could make it.””
“Thank you, Robert.””
Robert glanced at Danielle.
“And this must be your daughter.””
“Yes. Danielle.””
Robert smiled.
“Congratulations on the baby.””
“Thank you.””
The conversation was interrupted when Anthony Brooks appeared near the stage.
He was in his late fifties, with silver hair and a broad smile.
He wore a black tuxedo.
When he saw Marcus, he opened his arms.
“Brother!””
Marcus didn't move.
Anthony stopped.
His smile faltered.
“What's wrong?””
Marcus looked at him.
“We need to talk.””
Anthony glanced at Danielle.
“Of course. But not here. This is a celebration.””
Danielle spoke quietly.
“Uncle Anthony.””
He smiled at her.
“There's my girl.””
He leaned forward as though to hug her.
Danielle stepped back.
Anthony froze.
“What's going on?””
Marcus looked at him.
“You tell me.””
Anthony's expression changed.
He looked around.
Several guests were watching.
“Marcus, whatever this is, let's not embarrass ourselves.””
Marcus nodded.
“That's an interesting concern coming from you.””
Anthony lowered his voice.
“Can we talk privately?””
Marcus pointed toward a small conference room beside the ballroom.
“After you.””
Anthony walked ahead.
Marcus followed with Danielle and Evelyn.
Inside, Anthony closed the door.
His smile disappeared.
“What happened?””
Marcus placed the scanned authorization on the table.
“Did you sign this?””
Anthony glanced at the document.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer the question.””
Anthony pulled out a chair.
“I've signed hundreds of documents.””
“Did you sign this one?””
Anthony examined the page.
“It's part of the development process.””
Danielle stepped forward.
“It has my signature.””
Anthony looked at her.
“Yes.””
“I never signed it.””
Anthony sighed.
“Danielle, you may have signed something electronically without understanding what it was.””
Her eyes widened.
“Why would you say that?””
“Because you were involved in the foundation's development discussions.””
“I was never involved in this agreement.””
Anthony looked toward Marcus.
“Brother, you're allowing this to become unnecessarily complicated.””
Marcus placed another document on the table.
“Here's the hotel authorization.””
Anthony's expression tightened.
Marcus placed the payment records beside it.
“And here's the vendor transfer.””
Anthony looked at the documents.
Then he leaned back.
“You've been going through my business records?””
“They're connected to my company.””
Anthony shook his head.
“You always did this. You assumed every decision had to go through you.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Because it was my company.””
Anthony's jaw tightened.
“You built everything, Marcus. You got the recognition. You got the board position. You got the control.””
Marcus said nothing.
Anthony continued.
“And what did I get? A seat at the table whenever you remembered I existed.””
Danielle looked at her uncle.
“Is that why you used my name?””
Anthony turned toward her.
“I didn't use your name.””
“Then why is your signature on the witness document?””
Anthony looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he finally said:
“I was trying to protect the family's future.””
Marcus shook his head.
“By transferring my ownership authority?””
“By creating continuity.””
“Without my permission?””
Anthony's voice rose.
“You were always traveling! You were never available! Someone had to make decisions!””
Marcus stared at him.
“You could have asked.””
Anthony laughed bitterly.
“You would have said no.””
Marcus nodded.
“Maybe. But it would have been my decision.””
Danielle stepped forward.
“And mine?””
Anthony looked at her.
“You were never supposed to be involved.””
“Then why did you sign my name?””
Anthony opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The door suddenly opened.
Gregory Shaw entered.
“Anthony, we need to talk.””
Marcus turned.
“You're interrupting a private meeting.””
Gregory looked uncomfortable.
“I'm here to clarify some misunderstandings.””
Danielle stared at him.
“You were at the hotel when that woman slapped me.””
Gregory ignored her.
“Marcus, this is getting out of control.””
Marcus pointed toward the door.
“You shouldn't even be here.””
Gregory laughed.
“You think you can remove me from everything because you own the company?””
Marcus remained calm.
“No. The board suspended your access because of the investigation.””
Gregory's face tightened.
Anthony stood.
“Enough. Both of you.””
He turned toward Marcus.
“Look, I know the paperwork wasn't handled perfectly.””
Danielle shook her head.
“Not perfectly?””
Anthony ignored her.
“But nobody was trying to hurt you.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Then explain the attempted transfer of my ownership authority.””
Anthony looked toward Gregory.
Gregory immediately answered.
“It was a contingency arrangement.””
“Why was my daughter's identity used?””
Gregory hesitated.
Anthony spoke quickly.
“Because Danielle was listed as the future foundation representative.””
Danielle shook her head.
“I never agreed to that.””
Gregory sighed.
“Your digital approval was already in the system.””
Danielle looked at Evelyn.
“Can someone explain how?””
Evelyn opened her tablet.
“We're still investigating the access source.””
Then Anthony said something that changed the entire room.
“Your father gave me access.””
Marcus slowly turned.
“What?””
Anthony nodded.
“Years ago. You gave me authority to manage certain family administrative records. I used that access.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Not for corporate ownership transfers.””
Anthony shrugged.
“You gave me the credentials.””
“I gave you access to manage family paperwork. Not impersonate my daughter.””
Anthony looked irritated.
“You're acting as though I stole something.””
Marcus's voice became very quiet.
“You used my daughter's identity to take control of my company.””
Gregory stepped between them.
“Let's not use words like that.””
Danielle suddenly raised her phone.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at the screen.
An incoming email had just arrived from the independent forensic team.
She opened it.
Her face changed.
“Daddy.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
“They found the login.””
Evelyn approached.
“May I see?””
Danielle handed her the phone.
Evelyn read the report.
Then she looked at Marcus.
“Sir, the digital signature was created using a device registered to the foundation's administrative office.””
Marcus frowned.
“Whose device?””
Evelyn checked the report.
Then she looked toward Anthony.
“Your brother's.””
Anthony's expression collapsed.
Gregory immediately protested.
“That doesn't prove he created the document.””
Evelyn nodded.
“No. But it proves the digital identity was accessed from his assigned device.””
Anthony shook his head.
“I can explain that.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Then explain.””
Anthony looked toward the door.
Then at Gregory.
Then back at Marcus.
“I wasn't the one who planned the transfer.””
Marcus didn't blink.
“Who did?””
Anthony swallowed.
“Gregory came to me with the proposal. He said we could restructure the hotel investments without changing the ownership.””
Gregory immediately stepped forward.
“That's a lie.””
Anthony continued.
“He told me Danielle's approval was necessary because she was listed as the foundation's future representative.””
Danielle's voice trembled.
“Why would you believe him?””
Anthony looked at her.
“Because he showed me documents that appeared to have your approval.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You never called me?””
Anthony looked down.
“No.””
The silence was unbearable.
Then Marcus asked:
“Who created the signature?””
Anthony looked toward Gregory.
“I don't know.””
Gregory laughed.
“That's convenient.””
Anthony turned toward him.
“You told me the documents were legitimate!””
Gregory's face hardened.
“Watch what you're saying.””
Anthony suddenly reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.
“I kept something.””
Marcus looked at it.
“What is that?””
Anthony placed it on the table.
“The original instructions Gregory gave me.””
Gregory's expression changed.
“Anthony. Don't.””
Anthony slid the envelope toward Marcus.
Inside were printed emails and a handwritten note.
Marcus opened the first page.
The email instructed Anthony to help arrange the transfer of operational authority.
The sender was Gregory.
But the handwritten note attached to it contained a second name.
Marcus read it.
Then his face went completely still.
Danielle looked at him.
“Daddy?””
Marcus slowly turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a handwritten instruction:
*Once the transfer is complete, remove Marcus Brooks from the board.*
And beneath that instruction was a signature.
Not Gregory's.
Not Anthony's.
It belonged to the person who had founded Brooks Capital alongside Marcus nearly twenty years earlier.
His former business partner.
A man Marcus had trusted with almost everything.
*Samuel Whitaker.*
Marcus stared at the name.
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID showed Samuel.
Marcus answered.
“Samuel.””
The voice on the other end was calm.
Almost amused.
“Marcus. I hear you've been asking some difficult questions.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“Yes.””
Samuel chuckled.
“Then perhaps it's time we stopped pretending you don't know what's happening.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Samuel paused.
Then said:
“Your brother isn't the person you should be worried about.””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
Samuel continued.
“Because the person who approved the original transfer has been sitting on your board for years.””
And before Marcus could respond, Samuel added:
“Check the last page of the envelope.””
The call ended.
Marcus turned the page.
There was a final document.
A board resolution dated six months earlier.
May you like
And beside the resolution was a name that made him realize the betrayal was far bigger than anything he had imagined.
*The person who approved the entire scheme was the chairman of the Brooks Capital board himself.*
