Chapter 3: The Name on the Hotel's Ownership Documents

Vanessa had never been good at recognizing when she was in over her head.

She had spent fifteen years building a career around powerful people.

She knew how to enter a room, identify the most important person, and make sure they remembered her name.

She knew which executives enjoyed compliments.

Which investors preferred expensive restaurants.

Which hotel managers could be pressured with a phone call.

And which employees would apologize simply because she demanded it.

But she had made one mistake.

She had assumed Marcus Brooks was an ordinary father.

Now the hotel's general manager was standing in front of him, holding a business card as if it contained something explosive.

Thomas Reed cleared his throat.

“Mr. Brooks, may I speak with you privately?””

Marcus glanced at Danielle.

“My daughter stays with me.””

“Of course.””

Thomas turned toward Richard.

“Richard, I need you to explain exactly what happened.””

Richard adjusted his tie.

“As I mentioned, there was a disagreement between two visitors. I arrived after the physical contact had occurred.””

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“Physical contact?””

Richard shifted his weight.

“I mean the alleged slap.””

Danielle looked up.

“Alleged?””

Richard turned toward her.

“Miss Brooks, I'm not suggesting anything. I'm simply trying to use accurate language.””

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Is that how your managers are trained to speak to someone who reports being assaulted?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“No, sir.””

“Then let's not waste time pretending this is a vocabulary issue.””

Thomas nodded.

“Understood.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I would like to make something very clear. I am a business consultant, and I have a scheduled meeting with several people connected to this property. I will not be treated like a criminal because somebody decided to exaggerate a minor disagreement.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Did you strike my daughter?””

Vanessa sighed.

“I already explained what happened.””

“Then explain it again.””

“She walked into me.””

“And you slapped her?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“I was startled.””

Marcus nodded.

“That's not an answer.””

Thomas turned toward Vanessa.

“Miss Whitmore, please allow us to establish the facts.””

Vanessa pointed toward Danielle.

“She's making this bigger than it is. I didn't injure her.””

Danielle carefully adjusted Amara's blanket.

“You don't get to decide how much being hit hurts someone else.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Oh, here we go.””

Marcus moved slightly closer to his daughter.

“Danielle, do you remember what I told you?””

She looked at him.

“Don't argue. Don't sign anything.””

“Exactly.””

He turned toward Thomas.

“Now, I want three things. First, preserve every camera recording from the lobby. Second, identify every employee who witnessed the incident. Third, provide a written account of why my daughter was instructed to leave.””

Thomas nodded.

“I'll make sure those requests are handled.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Then she pulled out her phone.

“I'm calling my contact in corporate.””

Richard looked at her.

“Miss Whitmore, I wouldn't—”

She held up a finger.

“Don't tell me what to do.””

She dialed.

The call connected.

“Hi, it's Vanessa. I need you to get someone from corporate on the line. There's a situation here involving a man who seems to think he can intimidate the hotel staff.””

She listened.

Then her expression changed.

“No, I don't know his name. Marcus Brooks.””

A pause.

Vanessa frowned.

“What do you mean, you know him?””

She listened again.

Her eyes moved toward Thomas.

Then Marcus.

“Wait. You're saying he's...?””

The call ended.

Vanessa lowered the phone.

For the first time, she didn't have anything to say.

Marcus noticed.

“Something wrong?””

She quickly recovered.

“No.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Miss Whitmore, perhaps we should discuss your appointment separately.””

Vanessa straightened.

“My appointment is important. I'm expected upstairs.””

Thomas nodded.

“I understand.””

Then he turned toward Marcus.

“Sir, I believe we should move this discussion to the executive conference room.””

Marcus looked around the lobby.

“Why?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Because there are sensitive matters concerning the property's ownership and management.””

Danielle looked up.

“Ownership?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“I'll explain everything in a moment, sweetheart.””

Vanessa let out a nervous laugh.

“Oh, so this is about ownership now?””

Marcus said nothing.

Thomas gestured toward the elevators.

But before anyone could move, Evelyn approached with a phone in her hand.

“Mr. Brooks?””

“Yes?””

“Corporate has confirmed your request. They're asking whether you want the footage copied directly to the independent compliance team.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes. And ask them to secure the original files, not just exported clips.””

“Understood.””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“Is there something I should know?””

She glanced at Marcus before answering.

“The ownership board has been notified.””

Richard's face tightened.

“The ownership board?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa laughed again, but the sound was thin.

“Why would the ownership board be involved in a simple guest complaint?””

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas said something that made Richard look down at the floor.

“Because Mr. Brooks is the chairman of Brooks Capital Group, the investment company that controls the majority ownership interest in this hotel.””

Silence.

Vanessa stared.

Richard's mouth opened slightly.

Danielle looked at her father.

“Daddy?””

Marcus gave her a gentle smile.

“I was going to tell you after the conference.””

Thomas continued carefully.

“Brooks Capital has been one of our principal ownership partners for the last six years.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

She looked at Marcus's navy suit.

Then at his security team.

Then at the business card Thomas was still holding.

She had just slapped the daughter of one of the hotel's principal owners.

And she had encouraged the manager to throw that daughter out.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

He looked at Thomas.

“I want to know something.””

“Of course, sir.””

“Why was my daughter treated differently from the woman who hit her?””

Thomas hesitated.

“I'll need to investigate.””

Marcus pointed toward Vanessa.

“Did your manager ask her to leave?””

“No, sir.””

“Did he ask her whether she had struck someone?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Marcus turned toward Richard.

“Did you?””

Richard's voice became quieter.

“I was attempting to assess the situation.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You assessed their clothes. You assessed their appearance. You assessed which person you believed would cause you the least trouble.””

Richard swallowed.

“Sir, that's not fair.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then the investigation should be easy.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Mr. Brooks, I assure you that this behavior doesn't represent our hotel's standards.””

Marcus looked directly at him.

“Standards aren't what you write on the wall. They're what your employees do when they think nobody important is watching.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

Meanwhile, Vanessa had started typing furiously on her phone.

She opened a message thread with a contact saved as *GREG — REGIONAL PARTNER*.

*Vanessa:* Something terrible just happened. Marcus Brooks is here. His daughter is accusing me of assault.

The reply came almost immediately.

*Greg:* What did you do?

Vanessa stared at the screen.

*Vanessa:* It's being exaggerated. I need you to help me manage this before it gets out.

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

*Greg:* Vanessa, do not say anything else. Do you understand?

She frowned.

*Vanessa:* Why?

The response arrived.

*Greg:* Because you're not supposed to be involved in the hotel anymore.

Vanessa froze.

She read the message twice.

Then she looked toward Thomas.

“What does he mean?””

Thomas turned.

“What?””

Vanessa held up her phone.

“Greg says I'm not supposed to be involved in the hotel anymore.””

Thomas exchanged a glance with Marcus.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Mr. Reed, perhaps you should explain the pending vendor review.””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Not here.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Here is fine.””

Evelyn opened her document case and removed a folder.

“Mr. Brooks, this relates to the hospitality consulting agreement scheduled for review today.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“What consulting agreement?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“The agreement under which Whitmore Hospitality Advisory has been billing the property for operational consulting services.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“That has nothing to do with this.””

Marcus took the folder.

He opened it.

Several invoices were clipped inside.

His expression became increasingly serious.

He looked at Thomas.

“How long has this been going on?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Approximately eighteen months.””

Danielle glanced at the documents.

“What is it, Daddy?””

Marcus turned a page.

“Apparently, someone has been charging this hotel for services that may not have been provided.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That's an outrageous accusation!””

Marcus held up one hand.

“I haven't accused anyone of anything.””

“You're looking at my company's invoices!””

“I'm looking at documents that were already scheduled for review.””

Vanessa pointed toward Danielle.

“This is harassment. You brought your daughter here to create a scene and now you're using your position to threaten my business.””

Marcus looked at her for several seconds.

Then he spoke calmly.

“You struck my daughter. You encouraged a manager to remove her. You told her she didn't belong here. And now you're upset that someone is examining your business records?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

No words came out.

Danielle looked at the folder.

Then at her father.

“Daddy, I don't want you doing anything just because of me.””

Marcus gently touched her shoulder.

“I'm not.””

He closed the folder.

“I'm doing it because every person who walks into this hotel deserves to be treated with dignity. Whether they arrive in a designer dress or a secondhand blouse. Whether they carry a briefcase or a newborn baby.””

He turned toward Thomas.

“I want an independent investigation. No deleted footage. No altered reports. No private conversations with witnesses intended to influence their statements.””

Thomas nodded.

“Agreed.””

Marcus continued.

“And Richard should not be involved in handling this complaint while his own conduct is under review.””

Richard's face went pale.

“Sir, please. I have worked here for eleven years.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then you should understand why accountability matters.””

Thomas quietly asked Richard to step away from the front desk.

Vanessa watched as the manager who had confidently ordered Danielle out of the building was escorted toward the administrative offices.

For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.

But the biggest surprise had not yet arrived.

Evelyn's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and then turned toward Marcus.

“Sir, the compliance team has reviewed the first set of records.””

Marcus nodded.

“What did they find?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“There's a problem with the invoices.””

“What kind of problem?””

She opened another page.

“Three payments were authorized under a vendor account that doesn't match the company listed on the consulting agreement.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That can't be right.””

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“The account is registered to a company called Whitmore Executive Solutions.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Danielle looked between them.

“Is that your company?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“There's also a second issue. The person who approved the payments used an internal authorization code belonging to someone in hotel management.””

Thomas took the document.

He read the name.

His hand trembled slightly.

Marcus noticed.

“Thomas?””

The general manager slowly raised his eyes.

“Sir, I think you need to see this.””

He turned the document around.

At the bottom of the page was a digital authorization signature.

It belonged to someone who had been working closely with Vanessa.

Someone who had been standing in the lobby throughout the entire incident.

And when Danielle finally saw the name, she whispered:

“Wait... I know that person.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Who?””

Danielle pointed toward the reception desk.

Because the person who had helped Vanessa get away with everything wasn't the woman in the pink dress.

May you like

It was someone who had been smiling at Danielle from behind the counter just moments earlier.

And now that person's name was sitting on the document that could bring the entire hotel investigation to a very different level.
