Chapter 8: The Betrayal Came From Inside His Own Family

Marcus didn't move.

He simply stared at Evelyn.

“Read the name.””

Evelyn looked at the document again.

“Anthony Brooks.””

Danielle's face changed.

“Uncle Anthony?””

Marcus slowly nodded.

Anthony was his younger brother.

The man who had attended Danielle's graduation.

The man who had held her when she was a baby.

The man who had stood beside Marcus at their mother's funeral and promised that family would always come first.

Danielle shook her head.

“No. Uncle Anthony wouldn't do that.””

Marcus didn't respond immediately.

He remembered the last conversation he'd had with his brother.

Anthony had called three weeks earlier, asking whether Danielle was still planning to attend the foundation's annual charity dinner.

He had sounded perfectly normal.

He had even asked about Amara.

Marcus looked at the document again.

The witness signature was unmistakable.

But he wasn't ready to believe what it meant.

“Evelyn, call the legal department. Tell them to verify the signature independently.””

“Of course.””

Thomas looked confused.

“Is Anthony Brooks involved with the company?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“He's my brother.””

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

“See? This has nothing to do with me. You're bringing family disagreements into a hotel investigation.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Don't confuse an investigation with an excuse.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You don't have proof that I did anything.””

Evelyn looked up.

“We have multiple communications connecting your company to the disputed payments.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Those messages are being taken out of context.””

Monica suddenly spoke.

“I have more.””

Everyone turned.

She was standing near the filing cabinet, holding her phone.

“More what?”” Thomas asked.

“Messages.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“Monica, stop.””

Monica looked at her.

“You told me to delete everything.””

Vanessa took a step toward her.

“I said stop.””

The security officer moved between them.

Monica opened a folder on her phone.

“I kept copies of the emails because I was afraid they would blame me if something went wrong.””

Evelyn approached.

“May I see?””

Monica nodded.

The first email was dated seven months earlier.

It came from Vanessa.

*Subject: Administrative Processing*

The message instructed Monica to process several payments through the hotel vendor system.

Another email came from Gregory.

It instructed her to avoid sending the documents through the normal approval chain.

Then came a third message.

This one was from Anthony Brooks.

Marcus's face went completely still.

The message read:

*Anthony:* Once the authorization is entered, Marcus won't need to be involved in the operational decisions. Danielle's approval should make the transition easier.

Danielle read the sentence twice.

“Why would Uncle Anthony say my name?””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“Because someone wanted to use it.””

Evelyn opened the attached document.

There was another message.

*Vanessa:* Are you certain Danielle won't know about the authorization?

*Anthony:* She won't be involved. That's the entire point.

Danielle looked at her father.

“Daddy, what does this mean?””

Marcus gently touched her arm.

“It means someone used your name without your permission.””

“Why?””

“That's what we're going to find out.””

Thomas looked toward the door.

“Mr. Brooks, should we contact the police?””

Marcus nodded.

“Contact the appropriate authorities. Preserve every record and make no assumptions about who is responsible until the evidence is reviewed.””

Evelyn stepped aside to make the call.

Vanessa began pacing.

“This is a setup.””

Nobody answered.

“Anthony Brooks is responsible for this. He signed the documents. Why are you questioning me?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because your company received the money.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

“And because your messages show you were coordinating with him.””

“That doesn't prove I knew about the signatures.””

Monica spoke quietly.

“You told me to prepare the paperwork.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“You were supposed to be processing invoices.””

“I was.””

“Then stay in your lane.””

Monica lowered her eyes.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think you're some kind of hero because you arrived with security?””

Marcus remained calm.

“No. I think my daughter deserved better than what happened today.””

He turned toward Evelyn.

“Where is Anthony now?””

Evelyn checked the contact information.

“He's scheduled to attend the Brooks Foundation charity dinner tonight.””

Marcus looked at Danielle.

She was gently rocking Amara.

“Do you want to go home?”” he asked.

Danielle nodded.

“Yes, Daddy. I think I've had enough excitement for one day.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Then we're going home.””

Thomas immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Brooks, I can arrange a private car.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Our driver is waiting.””

He looked toward Thomas.

“Before we leave, I want a written acknowledgment that Danielle's complaint has been formally recorded. I also want confirmation that the footage, employee statements, and financial documents are preserved.””

Thomas nodded.

“You'll have everything.””

Marcus looked at Richard's former workstation through the open office door.

“And Richard Cole?””

“His access has been suspended pending investigation.””

“Good.””

“And Gregory?””

“His executive access has also been suspended.””

Marcus nodded.

“Continue.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped toward him.

“Mr. Brooks, can we talk privately?””

Marcus looked at her.

“About what?””

She glanced toward Danielle.

“Not in front of your daughter.””

Danielle looked up.

“Why? You had no problem humiliating me in front of everyone else.””

Vanessa's cheeks reddened.

“I'm trying to resolve this professionally.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You had an opportunity to resolve it professionally when you apologized.””

Vanessa looked away.

Then she whispered:

“I didn't know who she was.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“That is exactly what makes this worse.””

He turned and walked toward the elevator.

Danielle followed.

But before they reached the doors, Monica called after them.

“Miss Brooks!””

Danielle stopped.

Monica approached slowly.

“I know you probably don't want to hear anything from me.””

Danielle waited.

Monica looked down at Amara.

“I'm sorry I didn't help you.””

Danielle's eyes softened.

“Thank you for saying that.””

“I should have spoken up.””

“Yes,” Danielle replied.

“You should have.””

Monica nodded.

“I'll tell the investigators everything.””

“Please do.””

The elevator doors opened.

Marcus and Danielle stepped inside.

As the doors closed, Danielle leaned against her father.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, baby?””

“Do you really think Uncle Anthony did this?””

Marcus stared at the descending floor numbers.

“I don't know.””

“But the emails...””

“I saw them.””

Danielle looked down at Amara.

“Grandma always said family was supposed to protect you.””

Marcus swallowed.

“She was right.””

He paused.

“But sometimes the people who know you best also know exactly where to hurt you.””

The elevator reached the ground floor.

Their driver was waiting.

Marcus helped Danielle into the vehicle.

As they pulled away from the hotel, he received a call from the ownership board.

He answered.

“Marcus.””

The chairman sounded serious.

“We have a problem with tonight's charity dinner.””

“What kind of problem?””

“Anthony has confirmed his attendance.””

Marcus looked out the window.

“That's not a problem.””

The chairman hesitated.

“He's also requested that Danielle be listed as the principal signatory for the foundation's new hotel development initiative.””

Marcus sat upright.

“What?””

“He says it's already been approved by you.””

Marcus looked toward Danielle.

She was staring at her sleeping daughter.

“Nothing has been approved by me.””

The chairman paused.

“Then I think you need to see something.””

A message arrived.

It contained a scanned document.

Marcus opened it.

The heading read:

*BROOKS FOUNDATION — SUCCESSION AND CONTROL AGREEMENT*

At the bottom was Danielle's name.

Her signature.

And a date from two months earlier.

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

He turned toward his daughter.

“Danielle, have you ever received a document from your uncle asking you to sign something electronically?””

She frowned.

“No. Why?””

Marcus looked at the screen again.

The signature appeared authentic.

But the attached certificate showed something even more disturbing.

The document had been signed using Danielle's digital identity.

An identity that should have been accessible only through her personal account.

Danielle shook her head.

“Daddy, I never signed that.””

Marcus believed her.

But now they had a bigger problem.

May you like

Someone had obtained access to his daughter's private information.

And the person who could explain how might be sitting at the charity dinner that evening.
