Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Destroy the Entire Deal
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Danielle stood near the family lounge entrance, holding her sleeping daughter against her chest.
She had heard every word.
“My signature?”” she finally asked.
Monica nodded nervously.
“Yes, Miss Brooks.””
Danielle looked at the document case in Evelyn's hands.
“I've never signed anything involving this hotel.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That's ridiculous. You probably signed something without remembering.””
Danielle turned toward her.
“I think I would remember signing a contract worth millions of dollars.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Monica, explain exactly what you're talking about.””
Monica swallowed.
“About eight months ago, Gregory asked me to retrieve a contract from the executive records room. He said it was connected to a proposed investment agreement.””
“Who was supposed to sign it?”” Marcus asked.
“You.””
Marcus frowned.
“Me?””
Monica nodded.
“He told me the ownership authorization had already been approved. He said the paperwork only needed to be entered into the hotel's system.””
Evelyn opened her tablet.
“Do you remember the document number?””
Monica nodded.
“I wrote it down because something about the paperwork seemed unusual.””
She reached into her uniform pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Her hands were shaking.
Evelyn accepted it.
The number was written in blue ink.
She entered it into the document database.
A moment later, a scanned contract appeared.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
“Mr. Brooks, I found it.””
Marcus approached.
“Show me.””
Evelyn turned the tablet around.
The document was titled:
*BROOKS CAPITAL — STRATEGIC HOTEL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORIZATION*
The agreement proposed a major investment in the hotel's renovation and expansion.
The financial commitment was substantial.
But it wasn't the amount that caught Marcus's attention.
It was the signature at the bottom.
Marcus Brooks.
And beneath it was a second signature.
Danielle Brooks.
Danielle stepped closer.
“That isn't my signature.””
Evelyn enlarged the image.
Danielle shook her head.
“Daddy, I've never seen this document.””
Marcus studied the signature.
He knew his own.
He also knew his daughter's handwriting.
Something was wrong.
“Who witnessed this agreement?”” he asked.
Evelyn scrolled down.
“Gregory Shaw.””
“And who processed it?””
“Monica Ellis.””
Monica immediately shook her head.
“I didn't approve the signatures. I only uploaded the scanned document.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Did you see the original?””
“No, sir.””
“Why not?””
“Gregory told me the original had already been sent to corporate.””
Evelyn looked up.
“That's interesting.””
“What is?”” Thomas asked.
“The corporate document archive shows no original agreement. Only this scanned copy.””
Marcus looked toward Monica.
“Where did you put the document?””
She pointed toward the executive elevators.
“Gregory's office. In the locked records room.””
Thomas frowned.
“That's a restricted area.””
Monica nodded.
“I know.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
“This is absurd. You're going to accuse people of forgery because a woman doesn't recognize her own signature?””
Danielle stared at her.
“I know my own name.””
Vanessa shrugged.
“People forget things.””
Marcus slowly turned.
“Do you?””
Vanessa's expression tightened.
“Excuse me?””
“Do you forget things often?””
“I'm not participating in this ridiculous conversation.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Have the original secured. No one accesses that room without an independent witness.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Understood.””
Thomas called the hotel's security director.
Within minutes, two security officers arrived.
They escorted the group toward the executive elevators.
Danielle stayed close to her father.
Amara slept peacefully against her shoulder, completely unaware of the tension surrounding her.
The executive floor was quiet.
Thick carpeting covered the hallway. Glass office walls revealed conference rooms, private offices, and a large boardroom overlooking the city.
Gregory's office was at the far end.
The door was closed.
Thomas used his master access card.
The lock clicked.
Inside, everything looked perfectly organized.
A polished wooden desk.
Two leather chairs.
A glass cabinet filled with hospitality awards.
And a framed photograph of Gregory shaking hands with several senior executives.
Monica pointed toward a door behind the desk.
“That's the records room.””
One security officer checked the handle.
Locked.
Thomas frowned.
“Gregory has the only key?””
“Gregory and the regional executive assistant,” Monica replied.
Evelyn turned toward Thomas.
“Do we have authorization to open it?””
Thomas nodded.
“I'm the general manager. Under the current investigation order, yes.””
The security officer opened the lock using the emergency access procedure.
The room was small.
Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.
Several archive boxes sat beneath a table.
A printer hummed quietly in the corner.
Monica pointed toward the bottom cabinet.
“That's where he kept the investment documents.””
The officer opened it.
Inside were folders arranged by date.
Evelyn began checking the labels.
Then she stopped.
“Mr. Brooks.””
Marcus approached.
“What?””
She held up a thick blue folder.
The label read:
*BROOKS CAPITAL — ORIGINAL AUTHORIZATIONS*
Marcus opened it.
Inside were several documents.
Some were ordinary hotel investment records.
Others were vendor agreements.
Then he found a page with his name on it.
His expression hardened.
“This isn't mine.””
Danielle stepped closer.
“What's wrong?””
Marcus pointed to the document.
It contained a signature that looked almost identical to his own.
But there was something different.
The date.
It was dated three months earlier, when Marcus had been overseas attending an international investment conference.
He remembered the date clearly.
He hadn't been anywhere near the hotel.
Evelyn examined the document.
“This appears to authorize a transfer of management control to a third-party operating company.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“What?””
Marcus read the next page.
The agreement gave Gregory broad authority over certain financial decisions, vendor contracts, and regional operating budgets.
It also contained Danielle's supposed approval.
Danielle shook her head.
“Daddy, I never gave anyone permission to use my name.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know.””
Vanessa stood near the doorway.
Her face had become pale.
Evelyn flipped through the remaining pages.
Then she found another document.
A handwritten note was attached.
The note contained three words:
*Keep Danielle uninformed.*
Marcus stared at it.
Then he looked toward Gregory's empty office.
“Who wrote this?””
Monica slowly raised her hand.
“I recognize the handwriting.””
Everyone turned.
“Whose?”” Thomas asked.
Monica hesitated.
“Vanessa's.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That's a lie!””
Monica shook her head.
“I processed your handwritten instructions for months. I know your writing.””
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You're trying to save yourself!””
Monica's voice trembled.
“I know what I did. But I'm not taking responsibility for something I didn't do.””
Evelyn carefully photographed the note.
Then she noticed another page beneath it.
She lifted it.
Her expression changed.
“Mr. Brooks, I think you need to see this.””
Marcus read the heading.
*PROJECT CONTINUITY — OWNERSHIP SUCCESSION PLAN*
He scanned the first paragraph.
Then the second.
The plan described how the regional management team would continue operating the hotel if the principal investment partner became unavailable or withdrew.
It listed a proposed successor.
Danielle Brooks.
But she wasn't being appointed to a legitimate leadership position.
Her name was being used to authorize decisions she had never approved.
Marcus closed the folder.
“Evelyn, this entire archive needs to be secured.””
“Already arranging it, sir.””
Thomas looked devastated.
“Mr. Brooks, I had no knowledge of these documents.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then help us establish who did.””
A security officer approached with a small plastic evidence bag.
“Sir, we found a USB device in the desk drawer.””
Evelyn inspected it.
“Is it encrypted?””
“Yes.””
Monica looked at the device.
Her eyes widened.
“That's the one.””
Marcus turned.
“You recognize it?””
She nodded.
“Gregory carried that device whenever he went into the records room.””
Evelyn looked toward the security officer.
“Can you secure it without accessing its contents?””
“Yes.””
“Do that.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the desk.
“That's private company property!””
The security officer stepped between her and the drawer.
“Please remain where you are.””
Vanessa's breathing became faster.
“You have no right to search this office!””
Thomas looked at her.
“Miss Whitmore, you aren't authorized to enter this area.””
She glared at him.
“You'll regret treating me this way.””
Thomas shook his head.
“I've already regretted not treating Danielle properly.””
Vanessa looked around.
For the first time, she seemed completely alone.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
“Marcus Brooks.””
A familiar voice came through.
It was the chairman of the ownership board.
“Marcus, we've received the preliminary findings. The board wants an emergency meeting.””
Marcus glanced at the documents.
“Good.””
“There is another issue.””
“What is it?””
“The legal department has identified an attempted transfer involving your daughter's name.””
Marcus went still.
“An attempted transfer of what?””
The chairman paused.
“Your controlling ownership interest in the hotel.””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
Then back at the phone.
“Are you telling me someone attempted to transfer my shares?””
“Not exactly. They attempted to activate a document that would give a third party temporary authority over those shares.””
Marcus's expression darkened.
“Who was the proposed third party?””
Another pause.
Then the chairman answered.
“Whitmore Executive Solutions.””
Vanessa's knees almost buckled.
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
He looked directly at her.
And now he understood why she had been so desperate to silence Danielle.
The slap hadn't simply been an act of arrogance.
It had happened while Vanessa and Gregory were trying to protect something much bigger.
Something that could have cost Marcus control of his own company.
But before he could question her, Evelyn's tablet chimed.
An incoming message appeared from the legal department.
*URGENT: Original ownership authorization located. Document contains a second witness signature.*
Marcus frowned.
“Who signed as the second witness?””
Evelyn opened the attachment.
Her eyes widened.
May you like
She looked up.
“Mr. Brooks... it's someone from your own family.””
