Chapter 5: The Auction Day

The auction was held on a cold Friday morning.

People gathered outside my old house.

Neighbors whispered.

Strangers inspected the property.

And my father stood beside Linda looking like a man who finally understood the disaster around him.

I arrived quietly.

Linda saw me first.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

“You came.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“Emily, please. We can fix this.””

I looked at the house.

The place where my mother baked cookies.

The place where she sang while cleaning.

The place where she held me when I cried.

Then I looked back at Linda.

“You already fixed it.””

She frowned.

“What?””

“You turned it into exactly what it is today.””

My father walked toward me.

“Emily, I need to explain.””

I shook my head.

“No. I’ve heard enough explanations.””

He looked broken.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

“But you made one mistake that mattered most.””

His eyes filled.

“I should have protected you.””

I didn’t answer.

Because he was right.

And that was the hardest part.

The auction began.

Numbers were called.

People raised their hands.

Linda kept looking around desperately.

Then she whispered:

“You can stop this.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

“You can buy the house.””

I almost laughed.

“You want me to save the house you stole from my mother?””

Her face turned red.

“It’s still your family home.””

I smiled.

“No.””

The auction continued.

Then the final bid was announced.

The room went silent.

The auctioneer looked down at the paperwork.

“The winning bidder is…”

He paused.

Then looked up.

“Emily Carter.””

My father’s face went pale.

Linda stopped breathing.

I had bought the house.

Not to live there.

Not to punish them.

But because I refused to let strangers erase my mother’s memory.

Linda stared at me.

“How?””

I held the paperwork.

“Because your secret loan wasn’t the only thing hidden.””

My father looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

I looked at both of them.

“The house was protected.””

Linda’s eyes widened.

“No…”

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“My mother made sure nobody could destroy what she built.””

For the first time, Linda looked afraid.

Then my phone rang.

I answered.

Daniel’s voice came through.

“Emily, I found the final document.””

I walked away from them.

“What document?””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“The one proving Linda never accidentally lost the house.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She planned it.””

I looked back at Linda.

And she knew.

She knew I had heard.

Because her face had already turned completely pale.

The woman who stole my mother’s room.

The woman who thought she could take everything.

Had just realized one thing.

May you like

I wasn’t the girl she could control anymore.

I was the person standing between her and the truth.
