Chapter 6: The Betrayal Hidden in the Papers
Daniel’s words followed me long after the auction ended.
“She planned it.””
Three simple words.
But they carried the weight of everything I had been trying to understand.
I stood in the parking lot, staring at my old house.
The house where my mother’s voice still lived in my memories.
The house where Linda had walked in and acted like she could rewrite history.
My father approached slowly.
“Emily.””
I didn’t turn around.
“What did you know?””
He stopped.
“What?””
I finally looked at him.
“What did Linda tell you about the loan?””
His face changed.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“I…”
“That’s what I thought.””
Linda rushed toward us.
“Don’t do this here.””
I looked at her.
“Why? Because people might hear the truth?””
Her jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
I held up my phone.
“Daniel just told me everything.””
For the first time, Linda looked nervous.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She recovered quickly.
“Daniel always hated me.””
I laughed quietly.
“You really do have an excuse for everything.””
My father looked between us.
“Linda, what is she talking about?””
Linda’s expression softened.
“Robert, don’t listen to her. She’s angry.””
Angry.
That word again.
The easiest way to dismiss someone’s pain.
I stepped closer.
“I’m not angry because I lost my mother’s room.””
Linda looked at me.
“I’m angry because you tried to erase her.””
The silence was uncomfortable.
People nearby started leaving.
The auction was over.
But our story wasn’t.
My father lowered his voice.
“Emily, please. Just tell me what you found.””
I looked at him.
For years, I wanted him to ask that question.
I wanted him to care enough to look deeper.
Now that he finally did, it hurt.
“Ask your wife.””
Linda immediately said:
“There’s nothing to ask.””
I unlocked my phone and showed my father the document Daniel sent.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then froze.
“What is this?””
Linda grabbed his arm.
“Robert—”
“No.””
His voice changed.
It was the first time I had heard him sound truly afraid.
“Linda, what is this?””
She looked away.
That was her answer.
My father took a step back.
“You used the house as collateral?””
Linda sighed.
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think everything was easy? You think raising Chloe and maintaining this lifestyle was cheap?””
My father stared.
“Lifestyle?””
“Yes!””
Her voice rose.
“You wanted everyone to think we were a perfect family. I was just trying to keep that image alive.””
I couldn’t believe it.
She wasn’t apologizing.
She was blaming him.
My father whispered:
“You lied to me.””
Linda crossed her arms.
“And you lied first.””
The words hit everyone.
Even her.
Because she had said too much.
My father’s face went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Linda immediately looked away.
But it was too late.
I already knew.
There was another secret.
A bigger one.
Daniel called again.
This time, I answered on speaker.
“Emily, I reviewed the documents more carefully.””
I looked at my father.
“Go ahead.””
Daniel’s voice filled the cold air.
“There was a transfer made six months before your mother passed away.””
My heart stopped.
“What kind of transfer?””
“A large amount of money moved from your mother’s personal account.””
My father looked confused.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel continued.
“The money was transferred into a joint account.””
I stared at Linda.
“And who owned that account?””
A long pause.
Then Daniel answered.
“Robert Carter and Linda Hayes.””
My father looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.
“No.””
Linda’s face lost color.
“Robert, listen—”
He stepped away from her.
“You took money from her?””
“I didn’t steal anything!””
“You moved money without telling me?””
“I was protecting our future!””
My hands clenched.
My mother’s money.
My mother’s hard work.
Her final years.
And Linda had been planning around it.
I thought the worst was already over.
I was wrong.
Because Daniel had one more thing to tell me.
“There’s something else, Emily.””
I looked at my phone.
“What?””
His voice became serious.
“The transfer happened three days after your mother changed her will.””
I frowned.
“Why does that matter?””
Daniel paused.
“Because the person who helped Linda access that account…”
My breathing stopped.
“Was your father.””
May you like
I looked at Robert.
And for the first time in my life, I saw him as a stranger.
