Chapter 8: The Last Secret My Mother Left Me

I didn’t sleep that night.

Linda’s message kept replaying in my head.

You have no idea what your mother left behind.

I knew my mother.

She was kind.

Careful.

She didn’t hide things without a reason.

The next morning, I called Daniel.

“I need to know everything.””

He arrived an hour later.

This time, he brought a small wooden box.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother’s handwriting was on the top.

Emily.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

“She gave it to me before she died.””

I touched the box.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

I opened it slowly.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And one envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it with shaking hands.

My sweet Emily,

If you are reading this, it means something happened that made you question the people around you.

I stopped.

Tears filled my eyes.

My mother knew.

I need you to remember one thing. People who love you will never make you feel like you have to earn your place.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Daniel looked away, giving me privacy.

I kept reading.

Your father is a good man who sometimes makes weak choices. But weak choices can still hurt people.

That sentence broke me.

Because my mother wasn’t cruel.

Even after everything.

She still protected him.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

The house was never the most valuable thing I left behind. The most valuable thing is the truth.

I frowned.

The truth?

I searched the box.

Under the letters was a small USB drive.

Daniel looked surprised.

“I’ve never seen that.””

I plugged it into my laptop.

There was one video file.

Recorded three weeks before my mother passed away.

I clicked play.

My mother appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Emily, if you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

I covered my mouth.

Her voice continued.

“I wanted to tell you myself, but I didn’t know if I would have the strength.””

She looked down.

“I discovered something about Linda.””

The room went silent.

“She has been searching through my financial records.””

I froze.

“She wasn’t looking for a family. She was looking for access.””

My fists tightened.

My mother continued.

“But there is something she doesn’t know.””

She smiled slightly.

“The house is not just protected by the trust.””

I leaned closer.

“There is a second property.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“A property my parents left me years ago. I never told anyone because I wanted it to remain untouched.””

My heart raced.

Then came the final sentence.

“I put it in Emily’s name.””

The video ended.

I sat there frozen.

Daniel whispered:

“Your mother had another property?””

I nodded slowly.

Then I understood.

Linda didn’t want my mother’s bedroom.

She wanted everything connected to my mother.

The house.

The money.

The hidden assets.

Everything.

My phone suddenly rang.

It was my father.

I answered.

“Emily.””

His voice sounded terrified.

“What happened?””

“Linda disappeared.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She took documents. She took money. She left.””

I stood up.

“Where are you?””

“At the old house.””

I grabbed my keys.

“Don’t touch anything.””

“Why?””

I looked at the laptop.

At my mother’s face frozen on the screen.

“Because I think she’s looking for something.””

And I was right.

Because when I arrived at my old home, the front door was open.

May you like

And upstairs…

My mother’s bedroom had been completely destroyed.
