Chapter 1: The Girl Who Stopped the Runway

“You stole my mother’s dress!””

The little girl’s voice cut through the expensive runway music like a gunshot.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Hundreds of guests sat beneath the blue lights of the Grand Imperial Fashion Hall, their faces illuminated by glowing screens and enormous LED panels. Cameras followed the stunning model walking down the runway in a royal-blue gown, its silver floral bodice sparkling beneath the spotlights.

Then the camera swung toward the audience.

A young Black girl stood between two rows of velvet seats.

She couldn't have been more than eleven.

Her name was Mia Carter.

Her dark curls were gathered into a high puff, and her small hands trembled as she pointed toward the model. She wore a simple navy dress decorated with delicate silver floral appliqué. Unlike the designer outfits surrounding her, her dress looked modest.

But her eyes were fixed on the woman wearing that blue gown.

The model, a tall brunette named Vanessa Blake, continued walking for another two steps before noticing the commotion.

Her professional smile faltered.

Mia took one step into the aisle.

"That's my mother's dress!"" she shouted again.

"You can't pretend you made it!""

A ripple of whispers spread through the auditorium.

At the judges' table, three people exchanged uncomfortable glances.

The woman sitting beside Mia immediately grabbed her arm.

"Shut up, you liar!"" she whispered angrily.

Her name was Eleanor Whitmore.

She wore a black-and-gold patterned blazer, expensive diamond rings, and gold earrings that caught the blue stage lighting whenever she turned her head. Her braided hair was pulled into an elegant updo.

To everyone watching, Eleanor looked like a wealthy woman embarrassed by a child's outburst.

But the way her fingers dug into Mia's arm suggested something much more serious.

Mia pulled away.

"You can't silence me!""

"Sit down!"" Eleanor hissed.

"Do you have any idea what you're doing?""

"Yes!"" Mia cried.

"I'm telling the truth!""

A man in a black suit sitting on Mia's other side leaned forward.

"Mia, please. Stop this.""

His name was Daniel Carter.

He was Mia's father.

His face had gone pale, and a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. He looked toward the cameras, then toward Eleanor, as though desperately calculating how much damage his daughter's words could cause.

"Mia, sweetheart," Daniel said quietly, "we talked about this.""

"You told me to wait," Mia answered, tears gathering in her eyes.

"You said someday someone would listen.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Not here.""

"Then where, Dad? When?""

Eleanor reached for Mia again.

But this time, the girl stepped backward.

She bent down, grabbed a dark-blue portfolio from beneath her chair, and held it against her chest.

"I have proof!""

The music continued playing, but the audience had stopped paying attention to the runway.

Mia opened the portfolio.

Inside were several hand-drawn sketches, photographs, fabric samples, and pages covered in handwritten measurements. One page showed the exact blue gown currently being worn by Vanessa.

The bodice.

The silver flowers.

The curved stitching beneath the waist.

Even the unusual arrangement of tiny embroidered petals along the left shoulder.

Mia raised the sketch toward the runway.

"I made every stitch!""

A few people laughed nervously.

Others leaned forward.

Vanessa stopped walking.

Her face hardened.

"Who is responsible for this?"" she demanded, turning toward the production team.

Eleanor stood up.

"She's confused. She's a child. Please don't encourage her.""

Mia shook her head.

"I'm not confused.""

She pulled a small piece of blue fabric from the portfolio.

"This came from the dress before it was finished. My mom gave it to me.""

The man in the black suit reached for the portfolio.

"Mia, give me that.""

"No!""

"Please. You're making this worse.""

"Why are you scared?"" Mia asked.

Daniel froze.

Eleanor looked at him sharply.

"Daniel, get your daughter under control.""

But Daniel didn't move.

For the first time that evening, his eyes met his daughter's.

And Mia saw something that frightened her more than Eleanor's anger.

Guilt.

The kind of guilt that had been sitting behind his eyes for years.

At the judges' table, an older man slowly removed his glasses.

His name was Richard Hale.

At seventy-two, Richard was one of the most respected fashion designers in the country. His signature collections had been displayed in Paris, Milan, and New York. He had spent more than forty years judging emerging designers, and he was famous for recognizing craftsmanship from a single glance.

He had been watching the commotion in silence.

Now he leaned toward the microphone.

"Miss Blake," he said.

Vanessa turned.

"Yes, Mr. Hale?""

"Please stop walking.""

The runway model hesitated.

Richard stood abruptly, pushing his chair backward.

"Stop the competition!""

The amplified command echoed through the hall.

The music cut off.

The model froze.

Every camera turned toward the judges' table.

The audience fell into an uneasy silence.

Richard stepped down from the platform and walked toward Mia.

His polished black shoes moved slowly across the glossy floor.

When he reached her, he crouched until they were at eye level.

"May I see your portfolio, young lady?""

Mia hesitated.

Then she handed it to him.

Richard turned the first page.

His eyebrows tightened.

He turned another.

Then another.

His fingers stopped on a sketch of the blue gown.

He studied the silver floral embroidery.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get this?"" he asked.

"I drew it.""

"When?""

"Three years ago.""

Richard looked at her.

"Three years?""

Mia nodded.

"My mother taught me how to draw patterns. She said every dress has a story, and if you know the person who made it, you can recognize their work.""

Richard turned another page.

There was a photograph.

A young woman stood in front of an old sewing machine, smiling at the camera. She had warm brown skin, long natural curls, and a small silver necklace shaped like a flower.

Beside her was the unfinished blue gown.

Mia touched the photograph with one finger.

"That's my mother.""

Richard stared at the image.

The color seemed to drain from his face.

He looked at Mia again, then back at the photograph.

His voice became quieter.

"Who was your mother?""

Mia wiped her cheek.

"Her name was Grace Carter.""

Richard's hands began to tremble.

He looked toward the woman in the black-and-gold blazer.

Eleanor had gone completely still.

Her mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out.

Richard slowly stood.

"Grace Carter," he repeated.

Vanessa stepped away from the gown's train.

"Mr. Hale, what's happening?""

He didn't answer her.

Instead, he turned the photograph toward the audience.

"Where did you get this photograph, Mia?""

"From my dad's old box. Mom kept it with her designs.""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"You knew?""

Daniel lowered his head.

Eleanor suddenly stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous. Richard, we have a competition to finish. A child has interrupted an international event, and now you're treating her like some kind of expert.""

Richard didn't even look at her.

"Be quiet, Eleanor.""

The entire room seemed to inhale at once.

Eleanor's expression tightened.

Mia looked between them.

She had never heard anyone speak to Eleanor that way.

Richard returned his attention to the portfolio.

"Young lady, do you have the original design pages?""

Mia nodded.

"They're at home. But I brought copies.""

"Can you show me the date?""

She flipped to the back of the portfolio.

There, written in blue ink, was a date.

March 14, 2021.

Richard stared at it.

The fashion show had been promoting Vanessa's gown as an original creation completed only six months earlier.

Yet the exact design appeared in Mia's mother's notebook three years before that.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

"Who designed this dress?""

Vanessa straightened.

"The Whitmore Atelier. I was told it was a collaborative original design.""

"Who gave you the design?""

"Eleanor's company.""

Richard slowly turned toward Eleanor.

"Then perhaps Eleanor would like to explain why a dead woman's original sketches are sitting in your collection.""

Eleanor's face became rigid.

For a moment, Mia thought the woman would finally admit everything.

Instead, Eleanor leaned toward Richard and spoke through clenched teeth.

"Don't do this here.""

Richard looked at her.

"Why not?""

Eleanor glanced toward the cameras.

Then she looked directly at Mia.

And for the first time, Mia understood that the woman wasn't embarrassed.

She was afraid.

Because Eleanor knew something about her mother.

Something Mia had never been told.

Richard closed the portfolio.

"Nobody leaves this room until I understand what's happening.""

But before he could say another word, the giant screen behind the runway flickered.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Grace Carter standing beside a younger Richard Hale.

And underneath the photograph were five words:

*THE ORIGINAL DESIGNER WAS NEVER CREDITED.*

Mia looked at the screen.

Richard closed his eyes.

May you like

Then he whispered something that made Daniel stagger backward.

"Grace wasn't supposed to have died.""
