Chapter 9: The Mother Who Never Came Home

The airport security office was crowded with officers, legal representatives, and people trying to understand why one of the country's most famous fashion designers had suddenly appeared on a private departure list.

Richard arrived first.

Daniel followed with Mia.

Vanessa and Patricia remained at the hotel with copies of the evidence.

A security officer opened the door.

"Mr. Hale?""

Richard nodded.

"Where is she?""

The officer gestured toward a small interview room.

"Inside.""

Mia ran.

Daniel tried to catch her.

"Mia, wait!""

But she was already at the door.

A woman sat behind a metal table.

Her hair was shorter than Mia remembered from the photographs. There were faint lines around her eyes, and her hands rested nervously in her lap.

But there was no mistaking her.

Grace Carter.

Mia stopped in the doorway.

For several seconds, she couldn't breathe.

The woman looked up.

Her eyes widened.

"Mia?""

The little girl took one step forward.

Then another.

"Mom?""

Grace stood.

Her chair scraped backward.

"Oh, my baby.""

Mia ran into her arms.

Grace dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

For a moment, the entire room disappeared.

There was no fashion competition.

No stolen collection.

No legal battle.

Only a mother holding the child she had spent five years believing she might never see again.

"I thought you were dead," Mia cried.

Grace buried her face in Mia's hair.

"I know, sweetheart.""

"Why didn't you come home?""

Grace closed her eyes.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Eleanor?""

"Of Eleanor. Of Victor. Of what they might do to you.""

Mia pulled away just enough to see her face.

"But you let me think you were gone.""

Grace's expression crumpled.

"I know.""

"You let me cry every birthday.""

"I know.""

"You missed everything!""

Grace began crying.

"I know, my love.""

Mia stepped backward.

The hurt was too large to disappear just because her mother was standing in front of her.

"Why?""

Grace looked at Daniel.

He stood near the doorway, tears running down his face.

Then she looked at Richard.

Her expression changed.

"Father.""

Richard couldn't speak.

He walked toward her.

Grace stood.

For a long moment, they simply stared at each other.

Then Richard reached out.

Grace fell into his arms.

"My little girl," he whispered.

Grace closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

Richard held her tightly.

"I thought I'd lost you twice.""

She began crying harder.

"I'm sorry.""

He shook his head.

"You're here now.""

But Daniel remained near the doorway.

Grace looked toward him.

"Daniel.""

He nodded.

"Grace.""

The space between them was filled with five years of fear, anger, and things neither had known how to say.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

"You let me bury you.""

Grace lowered her eyes.

"I know.""

"I stood at a memorial service and listened to people talk about how brave you were.""

Her lips trembled.

"Daniel...""

"I told Mia her mother was gone.""

Grace covered her mouth.

"I didn't have another choice.""

"You could have trusted me.""

Grace looked at him.

"I did trust you.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

She glanced toward Mia.

"Because Victor had already threatened our daughter. And because I knew you had signed the documents.""

Daniel looked down.

Grace stepped closer.

"I knew Eleanor had convinced you to cooperate. I knew you were afraid. But I also knew that if you tried to help me, they would use Mia against both of us.""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I would have protected her.""

Grace nodded.

"I know you would have tried.""

"Then why?""

Grace looked at the security officer.

"Can we speak somewhere private?""

The officer nodded.

He closed the door.

Grace sat beside Mia.

Then she began explaining.

Five years earlier, Grace had discovered that Victor and Eleanor were using her fashion company to conceal millions of dollars in fraudulent transactions.

The stolen money was being moved through fake licensing agreements, shell companies, and fabricated design acquisitions.

Her collection was the centerpiece.

By claiming ownership of Flowers After Winter, Victor and Eleanor could secure financing and sell international rights to designs they had never created.

Grace discovered the scheme when one of her suppliers accidentally sent her a payment statement showing a transfer to a company that did not exist.

She began collecting evidence.

At first, she believed the matter was only financial.

Then she discovered the altered hospital records.

Someone had administered unauthorized medication to Mia.

Grace suspected Eleanor.

When she confronted her, Eleanor admitted that she had wanted Grace to sign away the collection.

But she denied trying to hurt the child.

Victor was different.

He wanted Grace to disappear.

"He told me that if I exposed the financial records, he would make sure Daniel went to prison and Mia was taken away," Grace explained.

Mia held her mother's hand.

"Why didn't you tell Grandpa?""

"I tried.""

Grace looked toward Richard.

"But Victor had already convinced everyone that my father had abandoned me. He used old family documents to make me believe Richard had chosen not to be part of my life.""

Richard looked devastated.

"Grace, I never abandoned you.""

"I know that now.""

She reached into her bag.

"After I discovered the truth, I contacted an attorney who helped me disappear.""

Daniel frowned.

"You faked your death?""

Grace nodded.

"I needed them to believe I was gone.""

Mia looked at her.

"But you could have come back.""

Grace took a shaky breath.

"I tried.""

She explained that she had arranged to meet Daniel several months after disappearing.

But the meeting location had been compromised.

Victor's men had followed her.

She had been forced to leave again.

"After that, I watched from a distance," she said.

"I saw your school photographs. I saw your birthday pictures. I knew when you lost your first tooth. I even saw the little dress you made for your school play.""

Mia's eyes filled.

"You saw that?""

Grace nodded.

"I saw everything I could.""

"Then why didn't you call?""

Grace looked down.

"Because every time I got close, someone reminded me that you could be taken away.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Who reminded you?""

Grace hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Eleanor.""

A knock sounded at the door.

The security officer entered.

"Mr. Hale, we've received an update.""

Richard stood.

"What is it?""

"Victor Mercer has been detained.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Finally.""

But the officer continued.

"There's a complication. He's claiming that the woman in this room is not Grace Carter.""

Grace looked toward him.

"Of course he is.""

The officer handed Richard a document.

"It's an emergency identity dispute filed by Victor's legal team. They're claiming this woman is an impostor attempting to obtain stolen company property.""

Richard read the first page.

His face hardened.

"He's trying to invalidate her identity.""

Grace nodded.

"That's why I came here.""

She opened her bag and removed a small sealed envelope.

Inside were original identification documents, a passport, and a medical record.

Richard examined them.

"These are authentic.""

Grace nodded.

"But there's something else.""

She produced a second envelope.

It contained a letter addressed to the judge overseeing the original financial investigation.

"Victor doesn't know I have this.""

Richard opened it.

The letter contained a sworn statement from one of Victor's former accountants.

The accountant had documented every fraudulent transfer, every altered contract, and every payment made to Eleanor.

But the final page contained a name that made Richard stop.

*THOMAS WHITMORE.*

Grace looked at him.

"Victor's real identity was Thomas Whitmore. He used the name Victor Mercer to hide from the financial investigations.""

Daniel frowned.

"But we already knew that.""

Grace shook her head.

"There's something you don't know.""

She turned the page.

"Thomas Whitmore died in 2018.""

Richard looked up.

"Then who is Victor?""

Grace lowered her voice.

"His brother.""

Daniel went still.

"His brother?""

Grace nodded.

"Thomas had an identical twin. Victor was his real name. After Thomas died, Victor assumed his identity and took control of the family company.""

Richard looked at the documents again.

"That explains the death records.""

"And the forged signatures," Grace replied.

Mia looked confused.

"Why did he use his brother's name?""

"Because Thomas had the legal ownership documents," Grace explained.

"Victor wanted access to the company without being connected to the financial fraud.""

Richard stared at the letter.

"So the man we have been calling Victor Mercer is actually Victor Whitmore.""

Grace nodded.

"And Eleanor helped him.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Why did she help her brother?""

Grace looked at him.

"Because Eleanor wasn't just his business partner. She was the person who controlled the hospital accounts and the foundation.""

Mia remembered the missing money.

"Mom's charity?""

Grace nodded.

"Yes.""

She opened the accountant's statement.

"Your grandmother created the Carter Foundation to help young girls learn fashion design. Eleanor and Victor used it to move money through fake scholarship programs.""

Richard's hands tightened.

"How much?""

"Nearly five million dollars.""

The room fell silent.

Mia looked at her mother.

"So they stole money meant for children?""

Grace nodded.

"Yes.""

Mia's face hardened.

"Then they stole from me too.""

Grace gently touched her cheek.

"They stole from a lot of people.""

Richard looked toward the security officer.

"Has Victor been taken into custody?""

"Yes, sir. But his attorney is demanding immediate access to his documents.""

Richard nodded.

"Then tell the investigators we have evidence of identity fraud, financial fraud, document forgery, and the attempted administration of unauthorized medication to a minor.""

The officer left.

Grace finally allowed herself to breathe.

But the moment was interrupted by Daniel's phone.

A message had arrived.

He opened it.

Then his face changed.

"What is it?"" Richard asked.

Daniel handed him the screen.

It was a photograph of the old fashion studio.

The door had been forced open.

The storage room was empty.

Every original sketch was gone.

Mia looked at her mother.

"How?""

Grace went pale.

"Because there's one person who knew where the collection was hidden.""

Richard turned toward her.

"Who?""

Grace looked toward the door.

Then she whispered:

"Patricia.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. Patricia helped us.""

Grace stood.

"She was the only person outside our family who knew about the blue room.""

Richard immediately called her.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

But it wasn't Patricia.

It was Eleanor.

"Good morning, Richard.""

Richard's expression turned cold.

"Where is Patricia?""

Eleanor laughed.

"Safe enough.""

Grace grabbed the phone.

"Eleanor, listen to me. It's over.""

A pause.

Then Eleanor spoke softly.

"No, Grace. It's just beginning.""

Grace's face changed.

Eleanor continued.

"You should have stayed dead.""

Then she sent a photograph.

It showed the missing collection.

Every original dress.

Every sketch.

Every handwritten pattern.

And at the center of the photograph was a document with Grace's signature.

A document transferring ownership of the entire collection to Eleanor Whitmore.

Grace stared at it.

"I never signed that.""

Eleanor's reply came immediately.

"Perhaps not. But someone else did.""

The phone screen went dark.

Richard looked at Grace.

Daniel looked at Mia.

And Mia slowly realized that even after five years, even after all the evidence, even after her mother had finally come home, Eleanor still had one last weapon.

A signature.

May you like

And someone in their family had apparently given it to her.
