Chapter 8: The Judge's Daughter
Richard couldn't move.
For nearly forty years, he had carried one photograph in his wallet.
A photograph of a little girl with dark curls and a silver flower necklace.
He had lost contact with her mother when Grace was young. He had been told that the child had moved abroad with her family.
He had never known she had grown up to become one of the country's most talented designers.
He had never known he had a granddaughter.
And now, he was watching her speak from a screen.
"Richard," Grace continued, "I don't know when you'll find this recording. I only know that if you're watching it, something has happened to me.""
Her face was tired.
Her voice was steady.
"I need you to listen carefully. Eleanor and Victor have stolen my work, but that's not why I'm afraid. They have discovered the truth about my family.""
Richard sat down.
Mia stood beside him.
Daniel watched from the doorway.
Grace continued.
"You are Mia's grandfather. I wanted to tell you, but I couldn't risk bringing you into this before I knew whether Eleanor had access to your personal records.""
Richard covered his mouth.
"My God.""
On the screen, Grace looked toward someone outside the camera frame.
Then she leaned closer.
"There's something else. Mia's birth certificate was changed. Daniel is the man who raised her, and he loves her. But the original certificate names you as her maternal grandfather.""
Richard closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
"Victor discovered this after he obtained a copy of my hospital records. He tried to use the information to threaten me. He believed he could control me by threatening to expose a family secret.""
Mia looked at Daniel.
"Why did Mom hide this?""
Daniel spoke quietly.
"Because Richard was married at the time. Your mother didn't want to destroy another family.""
Richard's eyes filled.
He remembered his first marriage.
He remembered the years of arguments, the separation, and the daughter he had been told was not his.
He had spent decades believing Grace was the child of another man.
Now he understood.
"Who told me she wasn't mine?"" he whispered.
Daniel answered.
"Victor.""
Richard stared at him.
"He knew?""
Daniel nodded.
"Grace found the original records. Victor had altered the family documents years earlier.""
Richard gripped the table.
"That man has stolen more than designs.""
Mia looked at the screen.
"Can we keep watching?""
Richard nodded.
Grace's face appeared again.
"There's one final thing, Mia. I didn't leave you because I wanted to. I left because I believed someone would try to hurt you if I stayed.""
Mia's tears began falling.
"I wanted to come home every day. I wanted to watch you grow. I wanted to teach you how to sew your first real dress.""
Grace smiled sadly.
"But if you're seeing this, you have already learned to make something beautiful without me.""
She reached toward the camera.
"Remember the hidden flower. Remember your name. And remember that love is not proven by blood alone.""
Mia looked toward Daniel.
Grace continued.
"Daniel, I know you made mistakes. But if you truly love my daughter, don't make her pay for them. Tell her everything. Let her choose what kind of family she wants.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Richard slowly removed his glasses.
He wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.
Then he looked at Mia.
"May I?""
She understood.
He wanted to hug her.
For a moment, she hesitated.
Then she stepped forward.
Richard wrapped his arms around her.
He held her carefully, as though afraid she might disappear.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Mia pressed her face against his tuxedo.
"You didn't know.""
"I should have looked harder.""
"Mom knew.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
He held her a little tighter.
"And now I know.""
The following morning, Richard contacted his attorneys.
The original designs, medical documents, and recordings were secured.
Patricia Wells agreed to provide a sworn statement.
Vanessa agreed to testify about the files she had discovered.
Daniel also signed an affidavit admitting that he had been pressured into signing the original transfer agreement.
But the most important evidence was still missing.
The original birth certificate.
Without it, Victor could continue claiming that the family documents were fabricated.
Richard contacted the hospital's former records director.
The man initially denied having any knowledge of the changes.
Then Richard mentioned the original medication chart.
The director went silent.
Finally, he agreed to meet.
They arranged the meeting at a private office downtown.
When the man arrived, he carried a thick envelope.
His name was Harold Simmons.
He was in his late sixties, with a nervous habit of adjusting his glasses.
"Mr. Hale," he said, "I wish this matter had stayed buried.""
Richard gestured toward a chair.
"Then perhaps you shouldn't have helped bury it.""
Harold lowered his eyes.
"I was following instructions.""
"Whose?""
"Victor Mercer's.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Did you alter Mia's records?""
Harold swallowed.
"Yes.""
Mia looked at him.
"Why?""
The man looked uncomfortable.
"Your mother had discovered financial irregularities involving the hospital. Victor threatened to expose an unrelated mistake in my department. He said I would lose my pension and face criminal charges.""
"So you changed a child's medical records?"" Richard asked.
Harold nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did you change her birth certificate?""
Harold hesitated.
Then he opened the envelope.
Inside were two documents.
One was the official birth certificate.
The other was the original hospital registration.
Richard picked up the second document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
The name listed under maternal grandfather was unmistakable.
*RICHARD HALE.*
Beneath it was a handwritten note from the attending physician.
*Biological relationship confirmed by parental declaration and supporting medical documentation.*
Richard exhaled shakily.
Mia leaned closer.
"So you're really my grandfather?""
Richard nodded.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Mia smiled through her tears.
For the first time, the truth had been confirmed by something other than a memory or a recording.
Harold placed another document on the table.
"There's something else.""
Richard looked up.
"What?""
"The original certificate was not the only record Victor asked me to alter.""
Harold produced a second file.
It contained a document showing the legal transfer of Grace's entire design collection.
At the bottom was a signature.
Grace Carter.
But the signature had been certified by a notary.
Harold pointed to the stamp.
"The notary was Victor Mercer's brother.""
Richard frowned.
"His brother was dead by then.""
Harold nodded.
"That's what I told the investigators.""
Mia looked confused.
"Then how could he sign?""
Harold looked at Richard.
"Because Victor had another identity.""
Daniel went pale.
"Another identity?""
Harold nodded.
"Victor Mercer was not his real name.""
Richard leaned back.
"Then who is he?""
Harold slid a final sheet across the table.
It contained an old photograph.
A younger man stood beside Eleanor at a company event.
Beneath the photograph was a name.
*THOMAS WHITMORE.*
Richard stared at it.
Eleanor's maiden family name.
Daniel whispered:
"He's Eleanor's brother.""
Harold nodded.
"Yes.""
Mia looked at the photograph.
"So they were family?""
Richard slowly understood.
Victor hadn't simply partnered with Eleanor.
He had used her family's name, connections, and legal identity to hide his own.
The entire operation had been built on a network of false identities.
But why had he chosen Grace?
Richard looked at the original transfer certificate.
Then he saw something in the margin.
A handwritten note.
*COLLECTION ACQUIRED IN EXCHANGE FOR SILENCE REGARDING THE 2018 ACCOUNT.*
Richard looked up.
"What happened in 2018?""
Harold shook his head.
"I don't know. Victor never explained.""
Daniel studied the document.
Then he remembered something.
"Grace once told me that she had discovered money missing from a charity project.""
Richard frowned.
"Which charity?""
"The Carter Foundation.""
Mia looked up.
"My mother's charity?""
Daniel nodded.
Grace had created a small program that provided sewing equipment and scholarships to girls from low-income families.
She had named it after her grandmother.
The foundation had been one of the first organizations to support her designs.
Richard looked at the paperwork.
"How much money was missing?""
Daniel turned the page.
A number appeared.
$4.8 million.
Mia stared at it.
"That's a lot.""
Richard nodded.
"And if Victor and Eleanor stole that money, the fashion collection may have been only one part of their operation.""
Harold slowly stood.
"I've told you everything I know.""
Richard looked at him.
"Not quite.""
Harold stopped.
"There's one final question. Where is Victor Mercer now?""
Harold hesitated.
Then he whispered:
"He's preparing to leave the country.""
Richard stood.
"When?""
"Tonight.""
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
"We have to stop him.""
Richard nodded.
But before anyone could move, Mia noticed something on the original hospital certificate.
A small handwritten note beneath the doctor's signature.
She pointed at it.
"Grandpa?""
Richard leaned closer.
The note read:
*DO NOT RELEASE ORIGINAL FILE WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM THE MOTHER.*
Beneath it was a signature.
Grace Carter.
And next to it was another name.
*WITNESS: ELEANOR WHITMORE.*
Mia frowned.
"Eleanor witnessed the original birth certificate?""
Richard stared at the page.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked confused.
"But why would she?""
Richard slowly turned toward the others.
"Because Eleanor knew the truth about this family from the very beginning.""
His phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke urgently.
"Mr. Hale, this is airport security. We've identified Victor Mercer.""
"Where is he?""
"He's at the private terminal.""
Richard grabbed his coat.
"Don't let him board.""
The man hesitated.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"He's not traveling alone.""
Richard looked at Mia.
"Who is with him?""
The security officer answered.
"A woman matching Grace Carter's description.""
The phone slipped slightly in Richard's hand.
Mia stopped breathing.
Daniel whispered:
"Grace?""
May you like
Then the officer added:
"She's alive, sir. And she's asking to speak to her daughter.""
