Chapter 2: The Name They Tried to Erase

The photograph remained on the giant screen.

Grace Carter stood beside Richard Hale, both smiling in front of a white backdrop covered with the logo of an old fashion exhibition.

Mia had seen hundreds of photographs of her mother.

But never that one.

Never beside a famous designer.

Never in a place that looked so important.

"Who put that picture up?"" Vanessa demanded.

A production assistant rushed toward the control booth.

"Sir, the presentation system has been overridden!""

Richard raised one hand.

"Leave it.""

Eleanor's gold earrings swung as she turned toward the technical team.

"Turn it off immediately!""

Nobody moved.

The audience had begun whispering again.

Phones were raised. Reporters were already typing. The fashion competition had become something entirely different.

Mia stood beside Richard, clutching the edge of her portfolio.

"Mr. Hale," she whispered, "did you know my mom?""

Richard looked down at her.

"Yes.""

"Was she famous?""

He gave a sad smile.

"She should have been.""

Mia frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Richard glanced toward Eleanor.

"It means your mother was one of the most talented designers I ever met.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Richard, please.""

Richard turned.

"Don't tell me to be quiet, Daniel. I've been quiet for five years.""

"Not here.""

"Exactly where should I speak? Another private room? Another meeting where everyone agrees to forget what happened?""

Eleanor crossed her arms.

"This is a ridiculous accusation.""

Richard looked at her.

"Then why are you afraid of a photograph?""

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

"Because you're turning an innocent competition into a circus.""

Mia suddenly spoke.

"My mother wasn't a circus.""

The words were small.

But they landed hard.

Richard looked at her.

"No, sweetheart. She wasn't.""

He turned toward the audience.

"Everyone, please remain seated. This competition is temporarily suspended.""

A judge beside him leaned forward.

"Richard, we have international sponsors watching.""

"I am aware.""

"The broadcast is live.""

"Then perhaps people should finally see something worth broadcasting.""

A murmur swept through the room.

Eleanor grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

"Get her out of here.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Daniel!""

He pulled his arm away.

"No.""

Eleanor stared at him.

For years, Daniel had followed her instructions. He had signed the documents she placed in front of him, avoided the subjects she told him to avoid, and allowed her to control the story of Grace's final years.

But something had changed when Mia stood up.

He looked at his daughter.

And finally, he looked ashamed enough to speak.

"Richard," Daniel said, "there are things you don't know.""

Richard nodded.

"Then tell us.""

Daniel glanced at Eleanor.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly.

He swallowed.

"Grace didn't just design that dress. She created the entire collection.""

The audience fell silent again.

Vanessa looked down at her gown.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"Five years ago, Grace was developing a collection for a major fashion house. She had been working on it for almost two years. The blue gown was supposed to be the centerpiece.""

Richard's face tightened.

"I remember.""

"She had a contract.""

"Yes.""

"She had sketches, fabric orders, production samples, and a complete design archive.""

"Where are they?"" Richard asked.

Daniel looked down.

"Eleanor took them.""

Eleanor laughed sharply.

"That is an outrageous lie.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Stop.""

"Daniel, think very carefully about what you're saying.""

"I have thought about it for five years.""

Mia looked up at her father.

"Dad?""

Daniel knelt beside her.

"Your mother trusted people who didn't deserve it.""

Mia's lips trembled.

"Did you know they stole her work?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

She pulled away from him.

The movement was small, but it hurt him more than anything Eleanor could have said.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

Daniel couldn't answer.

Eleanor took advantage of the silence.

"Richard, this is a family dispute. It has nothing to do with the competition. I suggest you stop entertaining these accusations before your reputation is dragged into something unpleasant.""

Richard gave a bitter laugh.

"My reputation?""

He pointed toward the screen.

"That photograph was taken at the 2019 Young Designers Exhibition. Grace Carter won the judges' award that evening.""

Mia blinked.

"She won?""

"She did.""

Richard looked at the audience.

"Her collection was titled Flowers After Winter. It was a study of women who rebuilt their lives after losing everything. The blue gown was its centerpiece.""

Mia looked at the silver flowers on Vanessa's dress.

Her mother used to tell her that flowers were important.

Not because they were beautiful.

Because they grew back.

Richard continued.

"Grace was offered a development partnership afterward. She was supposed to present the completed collection the following year.""

"What happened?"" Mia asked.

Richard took a breath.

"Her collection disappeared.""

Eleanor interrupted.

"That's enough.""

But Richard didn't stop.

"Three months before the launch, Grace contacted me. She told me that someone had copied her designs and was preparing to sell them under a different name.""

"Who?"" Mia whispered.

Richard looked at Eleanor.

"She believed it was someone inside the company.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"This is absurd.""

Richard continued.

"I told Grace I would investigate. But before I could meet her again, she withdrew from the partnership.""

Mia's eyes filled.

"Why?""

Daniel finally answered.

"Because she was threatened.""

Richard turned toward him.

"What?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"Someone sent her photographs of Mia leaving school. They knew where we lived. They knew when she went to the grocery store. They knew everything.""

Mia's hands began shaking.

"Someone watched me?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother became terrified.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"You were six years old.""

"That's not an answer!""

Her voice echoed through the hall.

Daniel looked as though someone had struck him.

Richard crouched again.

"Mia, your mother was trying to keep you safe. Whatever happened, she loved you.""

Mia looked at the photograph.

"I know.""

She touched the picture.

"She used to sew when I couldn't sleep. Sometimes I'd sit beside her and pass her the thread. She said I had good hands.""

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"She told me that one day I'd make something beautiful. But she never got to see me finish anything.""

Richard's expression softened.

"What did she teach you?""

"How to draw patterns. How to cut fabric. How to make flowers out of tiny pieces of cloth.""

"Did you make the samples in this portfolio?""

Mia nodded.

"Some of them.""

Richard opened the portfolio again.

He examined the samples carefully.

The tiny silver petals were arranged in a repeating pattern. Each one had been cut by hand and stitched onto a strip of blue fabric.

He held the sample beneath the overhead light.

"Who taught you this particular stitch?""

"My mother.""

Richard stared at the fabric.

Then he looked toward Vanessa.

"Take off your jacket.""

Vanessa frowned.

"Excuse me?""

"The outer jacket of the gown. I want to examine the embroidery.""

Eleanor stepped between them.

"That's unnecessary.""

Richard looked at her.

"Why?""

"The dress is a finished competition piece.""

"Then you shouldn't be afraid of an inspection.""

Vanessa hesitated.

She looked at Eleanor.

For the first time, the model appeared uncertain.

Richard pointed toward the left shoulder.

"There's a small detail there, isn't there?""

Vanessa glanced down.

"What detail?""

"The hidden flower.""

Mia immediately looked up.

Her eyes widened.

"How do you know about that?""

Richard turned toward her.

"Because your mother showed me.""

He looked back at the gown.

"Every dress in that collection had one flower sewn beneath the left shoulder. It wasn't visible when the dress was worn. It was a signature.""

Mia reached into her portfolio and pulled out another sketch.

There was a tiny flower drawn beneath the shoulder seam.

"Mom said it was for the woman who wore it," Mia explained.

"She said every woman deserved something beautiful that belonged only to her.""

Richard's fingers trembled.

"Then let's see it.""

Vanessa reluctantly turned toward the production assistant.

"Can someone help me with the fastening?""

The assistant approached.

Eleanor suddenly raised her voice.

"Nobody touches that dress!""

Every head turned.

Richard's expression became cold.

"Why?""

Eleanor stared at him.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

"Because it's an original couture piece. You could damage it.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Then perhaps we should ask the designer.""

Mia lifted her hand.

"I know where it is.""

She pointed toward the left shoulder.

"Under the lining. Near the seam.""

Vanessa slowly turned her shoulder toward the judges.

A female seamstress from the backstage team was called forward. She carefully lifted the edge of the lining.

There, hidden beneath the fabric, was a tiny embroidered flower.

Silver thread.

Five petals.

One loose stitch at the center.

Mia gasped.

"That's hers.""

Richard looked at the flower.

His face changed completely.

He recognized the stitching.

But the most important detail wasn't the flower.

It was the tiny initials embroidered beneath it.

G.C.

Grace Carter.

The audience erupted.

Vanessa stepped backward.

"Wait. I didn't know!""

Eleanor immediately pointed toward her.

"Don't say another word.""

Vanessa looked horrified.

"You told me this design was yours!""

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Vanessa, remember your contract.""

Richard turned toward the model.

"Miss Blake, did you receive the original sketches?""

"I received digital drawings from the atelier.""

"Who signed them?""

"Eleanor.""

"Did you know they belonged to someone else?""

"No!""

Eleanor laughed without humor.

"Convenient.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"You told me the designer had passed away and that her family had sold the rights.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"That never happened.""

Eleanor's face went pale.

Richard slowly turned toward her.

"Is that true?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the exits.

Two security officers were standing nearby.

Then she looked at Mia.

The little girl held her mother's photograph against her chest.

Eleanor's voice dropped.

"You're making a terrible mistake, child.""

Mia stared at her.

"My mother made that dress.""

Eleanor leaned closer.

"Your mother was never supposed to have it.""

Richard immediately stepped between them.

"What did you just say?""

Eleanor's lips parted.

She realized too late that the microphones were still active.

The entire auditorium had heard her.

And as the first wave of gasps swept through the room, Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.

"I have something else," he said.

Richard looked at him.

"What?""

Daniel's hand shook.

"Grace left this with me the night before she disappeared.""

Mia looked at the envelope.

Her mother's handwriting was visible across the front.

*FOR MIA. OPEN ONLY WHEN SHE'S READY TO KNOW THE TRUTH.*

Daniel turned toward his daughter.

"I think it's time.""

May you like

But before he could open it, Eleanor lunged forward.

"Give me that envelope!""
