Chapter 7: The Woman in the Reflection
The room seemed to shrink around Mia.
On the laptop screen, Grace Carter held a newborn baby against her chest. Her expression was exhausted, but her eyes were full of love.
Behind her stood another woman.
A woman holding a syringe.
Richard enlarged the image.
The woman's face became clearer.
Mia recognized her immediately.
"Eleanor.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped closer to the laptop.
"That's impossible.""
Richard examined the photograph again.
"Why?""
"Because Eleanor told me she wasn't at the hospital when Mia was born.""
Mia looked at him.
"She was there?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"She told me she had never met Grace until months later.""
Richard leaned toward the screen.
"Look at the date.""
The recording was timestamped five years before the fashion show controversy.
It had been filmed on the day Mia was born.
Daniel sat down.
"I remember that day.""
Mia turned toward him.
"What happened?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Your mother had a difficult delivery. I was outside the operating room. A nurse came out and told me everything was fine, but Grace needed rest.""
"Was Eleanor there?""
"I don't remember seeing her.""
Richard paused the recording.
"Daniel, look at the reflection.""
He pointed to a glass cabinet behind Grace.
The image showed Eleanor standing near the hospital bed, holding a syringe.
But the woman was looking directly at the camera.
Not at Grace.
Not at the baby.
At whoever was recording.
Daniel leaned closer.
"There's something on the cabinet.""
Richard increased the brightness.
A small identification badge was visible.
The name read:
*ELEANOR WHITMORE — HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATIVE CONSULTANT.*
Vanessa frowned.
"Why would a fashion executive have hospital credentials?""
Richard looked at her.
"Perhaps she had connections we never knew about.""
Mia touched the screen.
"Why was she holding that?""
Nobody answered.
Then Richard noticed a small symbol in the bottom corner of the recording.
A blue flower.
Beneath it were the words:
*PRIVATE ARCHIVE — GRACE CARTER.*
"This wasn't the original recording," he said.
"What do you mean?"" Daniel asked.
"Someone copied it from a larger archive. There may be more footage.""
Vanessa opened the folder again.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Some were photographs.
Others were scanned documents.
One folder was labeled:
*MIA — BIRTH / MEDICAL / ORIGINAL.*
Mia stared at the screen.
"Open it.""
Daniel hesitated.
Richard clicked.
Inside was a video file.
The recording began with Grace sitting in the hospital bed.
She looked younger, exhausted, and frightened.
A nurse stood beside her.
Then Eleanor entered.
"How are you feeling, Grace?""
Grace looked at her.
"Why are you here?""
Eleanor placed a bouquet of white roses on the table.
"I wanted to congratulate you.""
"Daniel didn't invite you.""
Eleanor smiled.
"Daniel doesn't need to invite me.""
Grace glanced toward the baby.
"Stay away from her.""
Eleanor stepped closer.
"She's beautiful.""
"Don't touch her.""
Eleanor stopped.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Eleanor placed a folder on the bedside table.
"We need to discuss the company.""
Grace laughed weakly.
"My daughter was born less than an hour ago. You really can't wait?""
"Victor can't wait.""
Grace's expression changed.
"Victor has nothing to do with my daughter.""
Eleanor leaned forward.
"That's where you're wrong.""
The recording suddenly distorted.
Then Grace spoke again.
"You're not going to get her.""
Eleanor's smile disappeared.
"Nobody is trying to take her.""
"Then why did Victor ask for a paternity test?""
Daniel stood abruptly.
"Pause it.""
Richard stopped the video.
Daniel's hands were shaking.
"He asked for a paternity test?""
Mia looked at her father.
"Was Victor trying to take me?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Richard continued examining the files.
"There's a document here from the same day.""
He opened it.
It was a medical authorization form.
The document stated that Eleanor had been given permission to administer a medication to the newborn.
But the signature was not Grace's.
It was Daniel's.
Daniel stared at it.
"I never signed that.""
Richard looked up.
"Are you certain?""
"Absolutely.""
Mia looked at him.
"Then someone forged your signature.""
Daniel nodded.
Richard opened another file.
A scanned hospital report.
The medication administered to Mia was listed.
But the dosage was different from the one recorded in the hospital's official chart.
Richard leaned back.
"This is evidence of deliberate medical interference.""
Mia's eyes filled.
"Did Mom know?""
Daniel nodded.
"She must have.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"She wanted you to grow up without fear.""
Mia shook her head.
"I've been afraid anyway.""
The words silenced him.
An hour later, Patricia Wells arrived at the hotel.
She was in her late fifties, with short silver hair and tired eyes. She carried a leather folder against her chest.
The moment she saw Mia, she stopped.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Mia stood.
"Did you take care of me?""
Patricia nodded.
"I did.""
"Did my mother trust you?""
"More than anyone.""
Patricia opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of medical records, a handwritten statement, and an original medication chart.
She placed the chart in front of Richard.
"This is what I kept.""
Richard examined it.
"Why?""
Patricia looked at Daniel.
"Because I knew the official report had been changed.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Who changed it?""
"Someone from administration came into the records department three days after Mia was discharged. He requested the original chart.""
"Who?""
Patricia pointed to a signature.
*Victor Mercer.*
Richard frowned.
"Victor was not a hospital administrator.""
"No," Patricia replied.
"But he was a major donor.""
She turned toward Mia.
"Your mother discovered that the hospital had received a large donation through a company controlled by Whitmore Atelier. After that, several records involving your medication were altered.""
Mia stared at the paperwork.
"So Eleanor gave me something dangerous?""
Patricia nodded.
"Your mother believed that Eleanor had administered an unauthorized substance. But we never found enough evidence to prove what was inside the original cup.""
Daniel gripped the table.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Patricia looked at him sadly.
"I tried. But Grace asked me to wait.""
"Why?""
"She said she had found something bigger than the hospital incident.""
Richard leaned forward.
"What?""
Patricia opened the final document.
It was a handwritten note from Grace.
"She told me that Victor Mercer wasn't simply stealing designs. He was using the company to conceal illegal financial transactions. Grace had discovered the original records.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"How much money?""
Patricia shook her head.
"I don't know. But Grace told me that the blue collection was being used as collateral for a massive financial arrangement.""
Vanessa looked confused.
"How can dresses be collateral?""
Richard explained.
"An original design collection can carry enormous commercial value. If the ownership documents are fraudulent, someone can use those designs to obtain financing, investments, and licensing agreements under false pretenses.""
Mia looked at the documents.
"So they stole Mom's name to make money.""
"Exactly," Richard replied.
Patricia nodded.
"Grace wanted to expose everything. She told me she had hidden the original recording somewhere safe.""
Richard looked at the blue flower symbol on the laptop.
"Where?""
Patricia took a breath.
"She said it was in the first place where she ever made a dress.""
Daniel immediately looked up.
"The old apartment.""
Mia nodded.
"The blue room.""
Patricia looked surprised.
"She called it that?""
"Yes.""
Patricia closed her eyes.
"Then she was waiting for you to find it.""
That evening, the group drove toward the old neighborhood where Grace had begun her career.
The original apartment building was gone.
A modern shopping complex stood in its place.
But Daniel remembered the basement entrance.
It was beneath an old brick wall behind the building.
A security guard initially refused to let them enter.
Richard showed him a legal authorization and explained that they were searching for historical property belonging to a deceased tenant.
Eventually, the guard unlocked the service door.
The basement smelled of damp concrete.
A narrow corridor led to a storage area.
At the far end was a blue metal door.
Mia stopped.
"That's it.""
Daniel tried the handle.
Locked.
Richard examined the door.
"Is there another key?""
Mia opened her mother's notebook.
Near the back was a small drawing of a flower.
Beside it were three numbers.
7-14-21.
Daniel tried them on the old combination lock.
Nothing happened.
Mia frowned.
"Mom wouldn't use numbers.""
She looked closer at the drawing.
There were seven petals.
Fourteen tiny stitches around the center.
Twenty-one leaves along the stem.
Mia turned the dial again.
7.
14.
21.
Click.
The lock opened.
Inside was a small room.
A sewing machine stood in the corner.
A wooden cabinet held several boxes.
And on the wall was a photograph of Grace standing beside a little girl.
Mia recognized herself.
She had been about three years old.
Under the photograph was a handwritten message.
*MY LITTLE FLOWER, IF YOU FOUND THIS ROOM, YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THE TRUTH.*
Mia stepped closer.
A small wooden box sat on the table.
She opened it.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A photograph.
And a sealed envelope addressed to Daniel.
Daniel stared at the envelope.
His name was written in Grace's handwriting.
He opened it.
The first line made his knees buckle.
*Daniel, if Mia is reading this with you, then you have finally stopped protecting the people who hurt us.*
He continued reading.
His face changed.
Richard stepped closer.
"What does it say?""
Daniel looked at Mia.
Then he read aloud.
"Victor Mercer is not Mia's biological father.""
Mia froze.
Daniel continued.
"He is the man who helped me hide the truth about her birth. But the man whose name appears on her original birth certificate is someone neither of you will expect.""
Richard frowned.
"Who?""
Daniel looked at the next line.
His voice broke.
"Richard Hale.""
The room became completely silent.
Mia slowly turned toward the older judge.
Richard looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
He shook his head.
"No.""
Daniel handed him the letter.
Richard read the final paragraph.
Then he looked at Mia.
His lips trembled.
"Grace was my daughter.""
Mia stared at him.
"What?""
Richard lowered the letter.
"Grace was my biological daughter.""
And suddenly, the old judge understood why the design, the flowers, and the hidden room had all felt so familiar.
But the most shocking part was still waiting inside the flash drive.
Because when Richard connected it to his laptop, a video appeared.
Grace looked directly into the camera.
May you like
And the first words she spoke were:
"Richard, if you're watching this, Eleanor has already told everyone that I'm dead.""
