Chapter 2: The Call He Couldn't Ignore

For a moment, Camille couldn't answer.

Not because she didn't know what to say, but because the truth felt too large to fit inside a phone call.

Lily was physically unharmed as far as Camille could see. There were no bruises, no blood, no broken objects scattered across the room.

But the child was frightened of asking for food.

And Camille had begun to understand that a home could look beautiful from the outside while becoming unbearable to the person living inside it.

“She's here with me,” Camille finally said.

“But you need to come home, sir.””

Daniel stood inside a glass conference room forty minutes away, overlooking downtown Atlanta.

A presentation glowed on the screen behind him. Six executives sat around the table, waiting for him to approve a multimillion-dollar expansion.

He barely noticed them anymore.

“What happened?”” he asked again.

Camille glanced toward the adjoining room. Vanessa's footsteps moved across the floor above them.

“Lily hasn't eaten enough today. Vanessa told her she would go to bed hungry.””

Daniel's fingers tightened around his phone.

“What do you mean, she hasn't eaten?””

“I mean she's hungry, sir. She's been asking for food.””

A strange stillness settled over him.

He had spent the morning worrying about contract negotiations, quarterly projections, and whether his company could open another office before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, his daughter had been asking someone in his own house for something to eat.

“Put Lily on the phone,” he said.

Camille hesitated.

“She's crying, sir.””

“Please.””

Camille approached the little girl and crouched beside her.

“Sweetheart, your daddy wants to talk to you.””

Lily looked at the phone as if it were something fragile.

“Did I do something wrong?”” she whispered.

Camille's eyes filled with tears.

“No, baby. You haven't done anything wrong.””

She held the phone near Lily's ear.

“Daddy?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Are you coming home?””

“Yes. I'm coming home right now.””

“Can you come before bedtime?””

His throat tightened.

“I'm coming as fast as I can.””

Lily was quiet for a moment.

Then she asked, “Can I have dinner when you get here?””

The question broke something inside him.

“Of course you can,” Daniel said.

“You can have whatever you need, baby.””

“Even if I'm bad?””

Daniel pulled the phone away from his ear for a second, staring at the screen.

Even if I'm bad?

He had never heard his daughter speak about herself that way.

“Lily, listen to me,” he said, forcing his voice to remain steady.

“You never have to earn food. You never have to be perfect to deserve dinner. Do you understand?””

“I think so.””

“I love you, sweetheart.””

“I love you too, Daddy.””

When the call ended, Daniel remained motionless beside the conference table.

His chief financial officer, Marcus Reed, cleared his throat.

“Daniel, should we take five minutes?””

Daniel looked up.

“No. We're done for today.””

One of the executives frowned.

“We still need your approval on the revised projections.””

“Send them to my office. Marcus will handle the follow-up.””

“Daniel, the investors are expecting—”

“My daughter needs me.””

He collected his keys, grabbed his jacket, and walked out before anyone could respond.

In the elevator, he called Vanessa.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Hey, babe,” she said brightly.

“Are you still at the office?””

“What's happening with Lily?””

The cheerful tone disappeared from her voice.

“What do you mean?””

“Camille just called me.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa laughed softly.

“Oh, please. Is this about Lily crying again?””

Daniel stared at the descending elevator numbers.

“Did you feed her lunch?””

“Of course I did.””

“What did she eat?””

“Daniel, I don't have time for an interrogation.””

“Tell me what she ate.””

Vanessa exhaled sharply.

“She refused what I gave her. I'm not going to beg a six-year-old to eat.””

“Camille says Lily has been asking for food.””

“Camille is a housekeeper, not her mother.””

The words landed with more force than Vanessa seemed to expect.

Daniel went silent.

She rushed to fill the silence.

“I didn't mean it like that. I just mean Camille doesn't understand what I'm trying to do. Lily manipulates people with those tears. If you keep rewarding her, she'll never learn discipline.””

“Did you tell my daughter she was going to bed hungry?””

Another pause.

“I told her there would be consequences if she kept behaving badly.””

“What did she do?””

“She was disrespectful.””

“How?””

“She wouldn't stop crying.””

Daniel gripped his car keys.

“You punished her for crying?””

“Don't twist my words.””

“I'm asking you a simple question, Vanessa.””

“And I'm telling you that I am trying to help raise your child while you spend all day at work!””

The accusation stung because part of it was true.

He was often absent.

He had allowed Vanessa to handle situations he should have handled himself.

But that didn't explain why his daughter was afraid to ask for food.

“I'll be home soon,” he said.

“Daniel, don't come home and make a scene over something you don't understand.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he sat behind the steering wheel without starting the engine.

Then he remembered something Lily had said two weeks earlier.

They had been sitting at the breakfast table when she asked whether he could eat dinner at home more often.

He'd kissed the top of her head and promised to try.

She had smiled, but it hadn't reached her eyes.

Now he wondered how many other moments he'd mistaken for acceptance when they were actually pleas for help.

He started the car.

Back at the mansion, Camille had taken Lily into the living room.

She didn't want the child standing alone in front of Vanessa again.

“Come sit with me,” she said gently.

Lily climbed onto the sofa, curling her legs beneath her.

“Is Daddy mad?””

“No, sweetheart.””

“Is he mad at Vanessa?””

Camille considered her answer carefully.

“Your daddy wants to understand what's happening.””

Lily stared at the floor.

“If I tell him, will he be sad?””

Camille's heart ached.

“Sometimes telling the truth makes people sad for a little while. But keeping a painful secret can make it hurt even more.””

Lily rubbed her cardigan sleeve over her cheek.

“Vanessa says Daddy already has too much to worry about.””

Camille went still.

“What else does Vanessa say, baby?””

Lily glanced toward the hallway.

“She says I shouldn't tell Daddy everything because he might get tired of me.””

Camille felt anger rise, but she swallowed it.

“And do you believe her?””

Lily didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Camille put an arm around her shoulders.

“Your daddy loves you. You can always talk to him.””

From the adjoining room came the sound of a drawer slamming shut.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway, now carrying her phone and a handbag.

She looked from Camille to Lily.

“What are you two whispering about?””

“Nothing,” Camille said.

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Then why does she look like someone died?””

Lily immediately lowered her head.

Camille noticed the movement.

So did Vanessa.

“Oh, for goodness' sake,” Vanessa muttered.

“Here we go again.””

She walked toward the sofa, placing her handbag on the coffee table.

“Lily, sit up properly.””

The little girl straightened.

“Look at me when I'm talking to you.””

Lily raised her eyes.

“Did you tell Camille I wouldn't feed you?””

Lily's fingers twisted together.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Answer me.””

Camille stood.

“Vanessa, she's frightened. Give her a minute.””

“I wasn't talking to you.””

“She is six years old.””

“And she's my husband's daughter. I know how old she is.””

“You're making her more upset,” Camille said.

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Do you know what your problem is? You think being kind means letting a child run the house.””

“No,” Camille replied quietly.

“I think a hungry child should be fed.””

For a second, neither woman moved.

Then Vanessa picked up her handbag.

“Fine. If everyone wants to make me the villain, I'll let Daniel decide what to do.””

She looked directly at Lily.

“And when he finds out what you've been doing, don't expect him to take your side.””

Lily's face crumpled.

Camille stepped between them.

“That's enough.””

Vanessa stared at her as if she had never imagined the housekeeper might challenge her.

Then she turned and walked into the adjoining room.

A few minutes later, the sound of footsteps came from the front entrance.

Camille looked toward the door.

Lily sat up straight.

“Daddy?””

The front door opened.

Daniel entered quickly, still wearing his tailored blue suit and white open-collar shirt. His eyes moved across the room until he saw Camille sitting beside Lily on the sofa.

He didn't stop to take off his jacket.

He crossed the living room and dropped to his knees in front of his daughter.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Lily looked at him for a second before throwing her arms around his neck.

He held her close.

She smelled of children's shampoo and the faint sweetness of the fruit bowl in the adjoining room.

Her shoulders shook against his chest.

“I'm sorry, Daddy,” she whispered.

Daniel pulled back just enough to look at her.

“Sorry for what?””

“For making everyone mad.””

His face tightened.

“You didn't make everyone mad.””

He rested his hands gently on her shoulders.

“What did she do?””

Lily's eyes filled again.

“She said I was bad.””

Daniel brushed a tear from her cheek.

“Who said that?””

Lily looked toward the hallway.

Before she could answer, Vanessa reappeared, her expression transformed into one of wounded disbelief.

“She's lying! She's always been a difficult child.””

Daniel slowly rose to his feet.

He placed himself between Vanessa and the sofa.

For the first time since they married, he looked at his wife without trying to soften what he saw.

“Get up of my house!””

Vanessa froze.

Her mouth opened, but no words came out.

Behind Daniel, Lily pressed herself against Camille's side.

The house was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioner.

Then Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Daniel,” she said, “you have absolutely no idea what that little girl has been telling people about me.””

Daniel didn't move.

“Then we're going to talk about it.””

May you like

Vanessa looked at Lily.

And the little girl immediately began to cry again.
