Chapter 4: The Night Renee Died

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't move.

Vanessa stood in Lily's bedroom doorway, one hand gripping the frame, her expression caught somewhere between defiance and fear. Behind Daniel, his daughter clutched the little plastic bag of crackers against her chest.

The name Renee had changed the atmosphere in the room.

It was no longer just about a hungry child, a cruel punishment, or a marriage beginning to collapse.

It was about the woman Daniel had loved before Vanessa ever entered his life.

“What did you just say?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You heard me.””

“Then explain what Renee has to do with this.””

“Ask Camille.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would Camille know something about the night my wife died that I don't?””

Vanessa's lips pressed together.

“Maybe because she was here.””

“So were you,” Daniel replied.

“You came to the house that evening to bring dinner. You told me you barely spoke to Renee.””

“I said ask Camille.””

Lily tugged at her father's sleeve.

“Daddy?””

Daniel turned immediately.

“Yes, baby?””

“Can I put my crackers away?””

The question nearly broke him. Even now, with adults arguing around her, Lily was more concerned about whether she was allowed to keep food.

“Of course,” he said gently.

“You can put them wherever you want.””

She slipped the bag into her bedside drawer.

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“Stay in your room for a few minutes. I'm going to talk to Vanessa.””

“Will you come back?””

“Absolutely.””

Lily searched his face.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

He stepped into the hallway and closed the bedroom door halfway, leaving it open enough that Lily could still see him.

Vanessa followed him toward the stairs.

“You're making this much bigger than it needs to be,” she said.

Daniel stopped on the landing.

“You brought up my dead wife to threaten me. I think I've earned an explanation.””

“I wasn't threatening you.””

“Then what were you doing?””

Vanessa looked toward the staircase, where afternoon sunlight spilled through the tall windows.

“Renee wasn't the perfect woman you remember.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Be careful.””

“I'm serious. You turned her into a saint after she died, and everyone around you was expected to pretend she never made mistakes.””

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Don't I?””

She stepped closer.

“You were barely sleeping. You were taking calls in the middle of the night. You were so terrified of losing her that you wouldn't let anyone admit how bad things had become.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Renee had been ill for months before her death. He remembered hospital corridors, medication schedules, and the way she had smiled whenever Lily entered the room.

He also remembered Vanessa visiting once with flowers.

At the time, Vanessa had been a friend of a friend, someone who had offered to help with errands when Daniel was overwhelmed.

He had never imagined that the woman who brought him food during those terrible weeks would one day use those memories against him.

“What happened that night?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked away.

“I wasn't there for everything.””

“Then tell me what you were there for.””

She shook her head.

“Not while you're looking at me like that.””

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“You expect me to comfort you?””

“I expect you to remember that I was there when you needed someone.””

“And what does that have to do with Lily?””

“Everything!”” Vanessa snapped.

“You treat her as though she's the only person allowed to suffer in this house. Everyone else has to tiptoe around her because she lost her mother.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“She is a child who lost her mother.””

“And I'm your wife!””

The words echoed across the landing.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel said quietly, “Being my wife never gave you permission to make my daughter afraid of you.””

Vanessa's expression shifted.

She looked toward Lily's bedroom.

“Do you think Camille is innocent in all this?””

Daniel said nothing.

“She has been here for years. She practically raised Lily. She knows every weakness in this family, and now she's using them to turn you against me.””

“Camille called me because my daughter was hungry.””

“Camille called you because she wants control.””

“Enough.””

Vanessa stepped back.

Daniel took out his phone.

“I'm asking Camille to join us. We'll discuss this together.””

“No.””

The answer came so quickly that Daniel looked up.

“No?”” he repeated.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don't want an audience.””

“You brought up Renee. Camille knows what you meant. We're going to talk about it.””

He called downstairs.

A few minutes later, Camille appeared at the foot of the staircase, wiping her hands on a clean kitchen towel.

Her eyes moved between Daniel and Vanessa.

“Is Lily all right?””

“She is,” Daniel said.

“She's in her room.””

Camille relaxed slightly.

Then she noticed his expression.

“What is it, sir?””

Daniel descended two steps.

“Vanessa says you know something about the night Renee died.””

Camille went completely still.

The towel slipped from her fingers.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Well?”” she demanded.

“Tell him.””

Camille looked at Daniel.

For years, she had carried memories she wished she could put down. She had told herself that some truths belonged to the past, that speaking about them would only cause more pain.

But watching Lily hide crackers beneath her pillow had reminded her of something important.

Silence did not always protect a family.

Sometimes it protected the person causing the harm.

“Mr. Williams,” Camille began, “there are things I should have told you a long time ago.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Then tell me now.””

Camille took a breath.

“The night Mrs. Renee died, I was in the kitchen preparing the soup she asked for. She had been feeling weak, and the doctor told us to make sure she ate small amounts throughout the day.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

He remembered the soup. Renee had asked for it that afternoon, saying she wanted to taste something familiar.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa came to the house shortly before eight.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“You know I brought dinner.””

“Yes,” Camille said.

“You brought dinner. But that isn't all that happened.””

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

She stared at Camille.

“Be very careful about what you say next.””

Camille's voice trembled, but she continued.

“Mrs. Renee asked Vanessa to come into the bedroom. They spoke privately.

I didn't hear everything, but I heard Mrs. Renee say that Lily needed stability and that you needed time to grieve before making any major decisions.””

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“What decisions?””

Camille looked at him sadly.

“I don't know, sir. But when Vanessa came out, she was crying.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Camille continued.

“She went into the kitchen and asked me whether Mrs. Renee had taken her medication.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What medication?””

“The evening medication the doctor had prescribed.””

“I gave Renee her medication myself that night,” Daniel said.

“I remember it.””

Camille nodded.

“Yes, sir. You did.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“This is a complete distortion. Renee was very sick. Everyone was upset. Camille is taking ordinary conversations and turning them into something sinister.””

“Then why did you tell me to ask her?”” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Camille looked at the floor.

“I don't know what happened after you went upstairs, sir. I went home before midnight. But the next morning, Vanessa came back to the house.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to help. She offered to organize some of Mrs. Renee's belongings while you were at the hospital completing the paperwork.””

Daniel remembered that morning.

He had barely been able to stand. His wife's death had left him feeling as if the world had tilted beneath his feet.

Vanessa had arrived with coffee, clean clothes, and a soft voice.

She had told him not to worry about anything.

He had thanked her.

He had never asked what she did in the house while he was gone.

“Did you see her take anything?”” he asked.

Camille hesitated.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“Answer him.””

Camille looked up.

“I saw her carrying a small envelope from Mrs. Renee's desk.””

Daniel's heart began to pound.

“What was in it?””

“I don't know. But when I asked whether she needed help, she said it contained old medical papers and that you didn't need to see them.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Because he was grieving! I was trying to protect him from unnecessary paperwork.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Did you take an envelope from Renee's desk?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember?””

“It was three years ago, Daniel!””

He took a slow breath.

“Did you remove any of Renee's belongings without asking me?””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“I was helping you!””

“That isn't what I asked.””

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

From upstairs came a soft sound.

A bedroom door creaking.

Daniel turned.

Lily stood at the top of the stairs, holding the wooden banister with one hand.

“Daddy?””

He immediately started toward her.

“Sweetheart, you should be resting.””

She descended one step.

“I heard you talking about Mommy.””

Daniel stopped.

Camille moved toward the staircase, but Lily shook her head.

“I want to tell Daddy something.””

Daniel climbed the stairs and knelt in front of her.

“What is it, baby?””

Lily twisted the hem of her cardigan.

“Vanessa told me not to talk about Mommy's blue box.””

Daniel felt a chill spread through him.

“What blue box?””

Lily glanced down the stairs.

“The one in the closet. Vanessa said it had grown-up things inside, and I wasn't allowed to touch it.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

“Lily,” she said sharply, “you shouldn't be listening to conversations that don't concern you.””

Daniel rose.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Vanessa backed away.

For the first time since he had known her, she looked genuinely frightened.

Because Daniel suddenly remembered the small blue keepsake box Renee had kept on the shelf in her bedroom closet.

After Renee died, he had searched for it, intending to give it to Lily when she was old enough to understand the letters and photographs inside.

Vanessa had told him it was probably packed away with the rest of Renee's belongings.

He had believed her.

Now he looked at his wife and asked the question that made her reach for the banister.

“Where is my wife's blue box?””

May you like

Vanessa didn't answer.

And the silence told him that whatever she had been hiding was not finished with their family.
