Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The attorney arrived at the mansion shortly after seven that evening.
His name was Richard Hale. He was sixty-two, silver-haired, and had represented Daniel's family for more than a decade. He had helped Renee prepare her estate documents and had guided Daniel through the legal arrangements after her death.
Daniel had always trusted him.
Now, as Richard stepped into the living room carrying a leather briefcase, Daniel wasn't sure whom he could trust anymore.
Vanessa sat on the far end of the sofa, her arms folded tightly across her burgundy blouse.
Camille remained in the kitchen with Lily, preparing a second small plate of food because the child had asked whether she could eat again later.
The blue box rested on the coffee table.
Richard looked at it, then at Daniel.
“You found it.””
“Yes.””
“Was everything still inside?””
“Most of it. Including a document showing money transferred out of Lily's account.””
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
“I was afraid of this.””
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
“You knew?””
“I knew there were irregularities. I did not know where the documents had gone.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“This is absurd. I will not sit here while two men discuss my life as if I'm a criminal.””
Richard placed his briefcase on the table.
“Mrs. Cole, nobody is asking you to leave. But I do need to establish what happened to these documents.””
“My name is Williams,” Vanessa snapped.
Richard paused.
Then he nodded.
“Mrs. Williams.””
Daniel noticed the correction.
He also noticed that Richard didn't look surprised by her anger.
“Please sit down,” Daniel said.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're taking his side already?””
“I'm asking you to sit down.””
She lowered herself onto the sofa.
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a thick file.
“After Renee's diagnosis, she contacted me about updating her estate plan. She wanted to ensure that Lily's future would be secure regardless of what happened to her.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“She already had an account for Lily.””
“Yes. But Renee wanted additional safeguards.””
“What kind of safeguards?””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
“She was concerned that someone might pressure you into making financial decisions while you were grieving.””
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“That's ridiculous.””
Richard continued.
“Renee requested that certain funds remain under independent management until Lily turned eighteen. She also specified that changes to the arrangement required your approval and confirmation from my office.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Then how did the money get transferred?””
“That's what I was trying to determine.””
“You said there were irregularities.””
Richard nodded.
“A few weeks after Renee's death, I received a request to redirect funds from Lily's account. The paperwork appeared complete, but I noticed discrepancies in the supporting authorization.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried to contact you. You were in the hospital dealing with Renee's final arrangements, and your family asked that nonessential matters be postponed. When I finally reached you, you told me Vanessa was handling the household paperwork.””
Daniel remembered that conversation.
He had been exhausted. He had been sleeping in short stretches and forgetting whether he'd eaten. He had asked Vanessa to manage anything that didn't require his immediate attention.
He had never imagined that his trust could be used against his daughter.
Richard continued.
“I refused to process the transfer until the authorization could be verified. A second request arrived several days later with additional documentation.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Was the money moved?””
“Some of it.””
The words struck like a physical blow.
“How much?””
Richard gave him the figure.
Daniel sat back, stunned.
It was enough to pay for years of Lily's education. Enough to fund medical care, a home, and a future in which she would never have to worry about money.
“Where did it go?”” he asked.
Richard opened a document.
“The receiving account was not held in Lily's name.””
Vanessa rose again.
“I told you I was trying to help! The money was moved temporarily because there were outstanding expenses.””
“What expenses?”” Daniel demanded.
“Medical bills. Household costs. Things you weren't capable of managing at the time.””
“Renee's medical bills were paid.””
“Not everything!””
Richard lifted his hand.
“If there were legitimate expenses, Mrs. Williams, we need records supporting them. At present, the transfer documents do not provide that explanation.””
Vanessa looked at him with open hostility.
“You have no idea what it was like living in this house after Renee died. Daniel could barely speak. Lily cried every night. Someone had to keep things together.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“And you decided that someone should be you.””
“Someone had to!””
“Not by taking money meant for my daughter.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You never asked what I needed. You never asked what I gave up. You brought me into this family because you were lonely, and then you expected me to live in the shadow of a dead woman forever.””
Daniel stared at her.
For the first time, he understood that Vanessa's resentment toward Renee had never been confined to the past.
It had followed them into every room of the house.
It had shaped how she looked at Lily, how she reacted when Daniel mentioned his first wife, and how she treated the child who carried Renee's eyes.
But resentment didn't excuse what she had done.
“You knew Lily was vulnerable,” Daniel said.
“You knew I trusted you. And you used both.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“You're making me sound evil.””
“No. I'm listening to what you've told me.””
Richard removed another document from his file.
“There is something else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“Renee left a sealed letter with instructions that it be given to you if certain concerns arose after her death.””
Vanessa went rigid.
Daniel noticed.
“What concerns?””
Richard glanced at her before answering.
“Renee was worried that her wishes for Lily might be disregarded if she was no longer alive to enforce them.””
Daniel felt a pressure build behind his eyes.
“Why didn't you tell me this three years ago?””
“Because the letter was conditional. Renee specifically instructed me not to deliver it unless I had reason to believe someone was interfering with Lily's care or financial security.””
Daniel stared at the envelope Richard placed on the table.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
For Daniel.
He reached for it.
Vanessa stood so quickly that her handbag fell from the sofa.
“Don't read that.””
Daniel stopped.
Richard looked at her.
“Why not?””
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
“Because Renee was sick. She was frightened. She didn't know what she was saying.””
“Then the letter shouldn't concern you,” Richard replied.
Vanessa's mouth opened.
No answer came.
Daniel tore open the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
My darling Daniel,
If this letter has reached you, then something has happened that I hoped you would never have to face.
I know you will want to believe the best in people. That is one of the reasons I love you. But please remember that kindness without questions can leave the people you love unprotected.
Daniel stopped reading.
He glanced toward the kitchen.
Lily was sitting at the island, her feet swinging beneath the stool while Camille cut an apple into slices.
His daughter had been hiding crackers in her bedroom because she was afraid to ask for food.
And he had been too busy trying to make his second marriage work to notice.
He continued reading.
I do not want you to live in fear or suspicion. I want you to give Lily a home where she can speak freely, where she can cry without being punished, and where she never believes that love must be earned.
Daniel's eyes blurred.
The next paragraph was shorter.
There is one person I am worried about. I tried to believe that her kindness toward us was genuine, but something has changed. She has become interested in matters that do not concern her, especially decisions about Lily's future.
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
Vanessa was staring at the letter.
Richard leaned forward.
“Daniel, may I see the last page?””
“There is only one.””
Richard frowned.
“Renee gave me two pages.””
Daniel looked back at the envelope.
He shook it.
Nothing fell out.
“Are you certain?””
“Absolutely.””
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a copy of a letter he had retained.
The second page was attached to it.
Daniel took the document.
At the top, Renee had written another sentence.
If Vanessa continues to insist on controlling Lily's inheritance, please speak to Richard before allowing her access to any more of our records.
Daniel looked at his wife.
Vanessa sank onto the sofa.
For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking of the clock above the fireplace.
Then Daniel asked, “Why would Renee write this about you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She misunderstood me.””
“Did you pressure her to change Lily's financial arrangements?””
“I was trying to make sure everything was organized.””
“Did you take the blue box?””
“No.””
Daniel held up the document.
“Then how did it end up hidden behind Christmas decorations in our garage?””
Vanessa stared at him.
“I don't know.””
Richard closed his file.
“Daniel, I strongly recommend that we preserve every document in that box and arrange an independent review of the financial records. We should also document the concerns about Lily's treatment.””
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“You're talking about investigating me?””
“I'm talking about establishing the facts,” Richard said.
“This is my home!””
Daniel rose.
“It is Lily's home, too.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“So that's it? You're going to throw away our marriage because your daughter had a difficult afternoon?””
Daniel felt anger rise, but beneath it was something colder.
A realization.
Vanessa still wasn't asking whether Lily was all right.
She wasn't asking how long the child had been afraid of her.
She was asking what would happen to her.
“I haven't decided what happens to our marriage,” Daniel said.
“But I have decided that Lily will not be left alone with you while we determine the truth.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You can't do that.””
“I can make sure my daughter is safe.””
“She's my stepdaughter!””
“And I'm her father.””
For a moment, Vanessa seemed ready to argue again.
Then she looked toward the kitchen.
Lily had noticed the raised voices. She was watching from behind Camille, one hand wrapped around the older woman's fingers.
Vanessa's face changed.
She smoothed her blouse, wiped her cheeks, and forced a smile.
“Lily, sweetheart,” she called.
“Come here for a moment.””
The little girl immediately stepped behind Camille.
Daniel saw it.
Richard saw it.
Even Vanessa seemed to recognize what the movement revealed.
Her smile disappeared.
“Fine,” she muttered.
“You have all made up your minds.””
She grabbed her handbag and walked toward the staircase.
Daniel started to follow, but Richard caught his arm.
“Let her go for now,” the attorney said quietly.
“We need to be careful about what happens next.””
Daniel watched Vanessa disappear upstairs.
“What do you mean?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“The account documents aren't the only discrepancy. I found something else while reviewing Renee's estate.””
“What?””
Richard hesitated.
“Your wife's final medical records include a request for an additional review of the circumstances surrounding her death. The request was never completed.””
Daniel felt the room grow cold.
“Why not?””
“Because someone withdrew it.””
“Who?””
Richard looked toward the staircase.
“The authorization carries Vanessa's name.””
Daniel couldn't speak.
For three years, he had believed Renee's death was a tragedy that medicine couldn't prevent. He had grieved, rebuilt his life, and tried to give Lily a new family.
Now the attorney was telling him that a request connected to Renee's final days had disappeared.
Before Daniel could ask another question, footsteps sounded on the stairs.
Vanessa reappeared, carrying a small suitcase.
She stopped at the bottom step and looked directly at him.
“You wanted the truth, Daniel?”” she said.
Her eyes were red, but her voice was suddenly steady.
“Then ask your housekeeper what she did after Renee died.””
Camille emerged from the kitchen.
The color drained from her face.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Camille?””
She looked at the blue box on the table.
Then she looked at Lily.
May you like
For the first time that evening, Camille appeared genuinely afraid.
And Daniel realized that Vanessa might not be the only person in his house who had been keeping a secret.
