Chapter 11: The Call I Never Mentioned

There are moments in life when you remember exactly where you were.

The smell of the room.

The sound around you.

The feeling in your chest.

That was one of those moments.

Malcolm was staring at me.

Tasha was staring at me.

And I was staring at the notebook.

My name sat there.

A stranger’s handwriting.

A stranger’s accusation.

But my name.

“Dad?””

Malcolm’s voice was different.

Not angry.

Confused.

That hurt more.

Because anger would have been easier.

“I can explain.””

The words left my mouth before I even knew what I was saying.

Malcolm looked away.

“Explain what?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the truth was something I had buried for years.

Something I thought was protecting my son.

But maybe I was only protecting myself.

“I did receive a call.””

Malcolm froze.

“When?””

“The night before your wife died.””

Silence.

Tasha looked at me.

“You never told him?””

“No.””

“Why?””

I looked at Malcolm.

Because there was no easy answer.

“Because she asked me not to.””

My son stepped back.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

His expression hardened.

“From what?””

I looked down.

“From the truth.””

Malcolm laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

He pointed upstairs.

“Who protected Isaiah?””

Nobody answered.

That sentence stayed with me.

Because he was right.

Everyone had made choices.

Everyone had excuses.

And Isaiah was the one who carried the consequences.

“What did she say?”” Malcolm asked.

I sat down.

“She sounded scared.””

“How scared?””

“Very.””

“What did she tell you?””

I looked at the notebook.

“She said someone was trying to take something from Isaiah.””

Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She wouldn’t tell me.””

“Why?””

“Because she said if I knew everything, I would become a target too.””

The room became quiet.

Tasha whispered:

“She knew.””

I looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That Derek wasn’t the only person involved.””

Malcolm turned toward her.

“Then who?””

Tasha shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the notebook again.

My name.

The dates.

The notes.

Something didn’t make sense.

“Wait.””

I grabbed the notebook.

“There’s something wrong.””

Malcolm looked at me.

“What?””

“The handwriting.””

“What about it?””

“I’ve seen this before.””

Tasha frowned.

“Where?””

I turned the page.

“This isn’t Derek’s handwriting.””

The room froze.

Malcolm stared.

“How do you know?””

“Because Derek writes with his left hand.””

I pointed.

“These letters were written by someone who writes with their right.””

Tasha looked shocked.

“Then who wrote it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, another memory came back.

A memory I had ignored.

A memory from years ago.

A conversation after my daughter-in-law died.

Someone had come to my house.

Someone who said they wanted to help.

Someone who asked questions about Isaiah.

Questions that felt strange.

Questions I forgot.

Until now.

Malcolm noticed my face.

“Dad?””

I whispered:

“I think I know.””

“Who?””

I looked at him.

And said the name.

“Your mother.””

Malcolm went completely still.

“My mother?””

I nodded slowly.

“She knew about the money.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She couldn’t.””

“She could.””

Malcolm stood.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Mom loved Isaiah.””

“She did.””

“Then why?””

I had no answer.

Because that was the hardest part.

Sometimes people can love someone and still make terrible choices.

Sometimes love and selfishness exist in the same person.

My phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

“Walter.””

I knew immediately.

My blood went cold.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“You should have left the past buried.””

Malcolm looked at me.

I didn’t speak.

The voice continued.

“You made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“You trusted the wrong person.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Malcolm stepped closer.

“Who was it?””

I looked at him.

And for the first time in years…

I felt afraid.

Because I recognized that voice.

It wasn’t Derek.

May you like

It wasn’t Tasha.

It was someone I had known my entire life.
