Chapter 8: The Lie Nobody Expected

The accusation hung in the air.

Your father’s.

Those three words changed everything.

I stared at Malcolm.

He stared at the phone.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Because sometimes the most painful lies are the ones that come from someone you never suspected.

“Tasha,” Malcolm said slowly, “what are you talking about?””

Her breathing was shaky.

“I’m saying I didn’t do this alone.””

“Who helped you?””

Silence.

“Tasha.””

“I can’t.””

Malcolm’s voice hardened.

“You need to.””

A few seconds passed.

Then she whispered:

“Your brother.””

My eyebrows lifted.

Malcolm stepped back.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

I felt the room shift.

Malcolm’s younger brother, Derek.

The person I had spent years defending.

The person who had always needed help.

The person who always seemed to have another problem.

Another emergency.

Another excuse.

“That’s impossible,” Malcolm said.

Tasha laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was exhausted.

“You really don’t know your own family.””

Malcolm’s expression changed.

“Explain.””

“I was drowning.””

“You stole from my son.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice became sharper.

“You don’t know what you took.””

Tasha went quiet.

Then she said:

“I know exactly what I took.””

That sentence disturbed me.

“Why?”” I asked.

Malcolm looked at me.

Then back at the phone.

“Why did you do it?””

Her voice broke.

“Because Derek told me I had no choice.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“Don’t blame him.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell the truth.””

“I am.””

I grabbed a chair.

This story had become bigger than any of us expected.

“Where are you?””

Tasha didn’t answer.

“Where are you, Tasha?””

Another pause.

“Somewhere safe.””

“Safe from who?””

She whispered:

“Derek.””

Malcolm froze.

I watched his face.

A mixture of anger and confusion.

“What did he threaten you with?””

“I can’t talk about it.””

“You already are.””

“I need protection first.””

Malcolm laughed bitterly.

“Protection?””

“Yes.””

“After what you did?””

“I know what it looks like.””

“It looks like you stole from a child.””

The line became silent.

Then Tasha said:

“I deserve that.””

That surprised me.

Because for the first time, she wasn’t defending herself.

“I made mistakes,” she continued.

“But Derek knew how to make people panic.””

Malcolm leaned forward.

“What does that mean?””

“He told me things.””

“What things?””

“That your father was going to take Isaiah away.””

I looked at Malcolm.

“What?””

“He told me everyone was waiting for me to fail.””

Tasha’s voice cracked.

“I was scared.””

Malcolm shook his head.

“So you hurt Isaiah because you were scared?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice lowered.

“You don’t know what you did.””

Silence.

Then Tasha whispered:

“Malcolm…”

“What?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

“The reason Derek wanted the money.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What reason?””

Tasha hesitated.

“He wasn’t paying a debt.””

Malcolm frowned.

“Then what?””

“He was paying someone to keep quiet.””

The room went silent.

“About what?”” Malcolm asked.

Tasha didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“About what happened to Isaiah’s mother.””

Everything stopped.

My hand froze.

Malcolm stood completely still.

“What did you say?””

“I think Derek knows something.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My brother wasn’t involved.””

“You don’t know that.””

Malcolm’s breathing changed.

I knew that sound.

The sound of someone trying to reject something before hearing it.

“What happened to my wife?””

Tasha whispered:

“I don’t know.””

“But?””

“But Derek does.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Malcolm asked:

“Where did you get this information?””

“From his phone.””

“You looked through his phone?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because after he pressured me to take the money, I started thinking.””

“And?””

“I saw messages.””

“What kind of messages?””

She took a breath.

“Messages about Isaiah’s mother.””

The air felt heavy.

Malcolm walked to the window.

“My wife’s death was an accident.””

Tasha didn’t answer.

“Wasn’t it?””

Still silence.

Then:

“I don’t know.””

Malcolm closed his eyes.

That was the moment everything changed.

Because until then, this was about money.

About betrayal.

About a child being forgotten.

But now…

It was about something much older.

Something buried.

Something someone had spent years hiding.

The next morning, Malcolm found Derek.

He was waiting outside his apartment.

The moment Derek saw him, his smile disappeared.

“Malcolm?””

My son stepped closer.

“What happened to my wife?””

Derek looked away.

“What are you talking about?””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

Malcolm held up his phone.

“Then explain these.””

Derek looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Malcolm saw it.

“You know something.””

Derek swallowed.

“No.””

“You know something.””

“Malcolm…”

“Tell me the truth.””

Derek looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

“You need to stop asking questions.””

Malcolm stepped closer.

“Why?””

Because Derek’s next words made my son go completely silent.

“Because the person who caused your wife’s death…”

May you like

He looked directly at Malcolm.

“Is still closer to you than you think.””
