Chapter 6: The Letter She Left Behind

Nobody spoke after Malcolm opened the letter.

It was strange how one piece of paper could silence an entire room.

The envelope was old.

The edges were worn.

The handwriting was delicate.

A reminder that someone who was gone had still found a way to protect her son.

Malcolm sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“Do you want me to read it?”” he asked Isaiah.

Isaiah looked at the letter.

Then nodded.

“Yes.””

Malcolm unfolded it carefully.

And began.

“Dear Isaiah…”

His voice cracked.

He stopped.

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

He continued.

“Dear Isaiah, if you are old enough to read this, then you are old enough to know something important.””

Isaiah stared.

“Your mother loved you before she ever held you.””

Malcolm stopped again.

This time, tears fell.

Nobody interrupted.

“She loved you before your first smile. Before your first word. Before your first step.””

Isaiah wiped his eyes.

Malcolm kept reading.

“I want you to remember that you were never a burden. You were never the reason my life was difficult. You were the reason my life was beautiful.””

The room became quiet.

Even Tasha looked down.

Malcolm continued.

“I left something for you because I wanted you to have a beginning that was yours.””

He looked at the second page.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I noticed immediately.

“What does it say?””

Malcolm read silently.

Then he looked at me.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

He looked at Tasha.

“She knew someone might try to take it.””

Tasha’s face changed.

“No.””

Malcolm looked back at the letter.

“She wrote instructions.””

Isaiah moved closer.

“What instructions?””

Malcolm swallowed.

The next words were difficult.

“She said the money should only be used for Isaiah’s education.””

Nobody moved.

The truth sat there.

Simple.

Clear.

Impossible to argue.

Tasha shook her head.

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“It means everything.””

“No, it doesn’t.””

“She specifically protected him.””

“She didn’t know me.””

“She knew enough.””

Tasha stood.

“I made mistakes.””

Malcolm looked at her.

“This wasn’t one mistake.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I was trying to help my family.””

“And you hurt mine.””

The words landed hard.

Tasha looked toward Isaiah.

“Isaiah, I’m sorry.””

The boy didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“I really am.””

Isaiah looked at her.

“Did you ever buy my things?””

She froze.

A simple question.

A devastating one.

“No.””

His face fell.

“Okay.””

That was all he said.

No yelling.

No anger.

Just acceptance.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Malcolm walked beside him.

“Buddy.””

Isaiah looked up.

“I’m going to fix this.””

Isaiah nodded.

“Can we get my backpack tomorrow?””

Malcolm closed his eyes.

Because that was all his son wanted.

Not revenge.

Not punishment.

A backpack.

School supplies.

To feel included.

“Yes,” Malcolm whispered.

“Tomorrow.””

The next morning, I expected anger.

Arguments.

More excuses.

Instead, Tasha was gone.

Her bedroom was empty.

Her clothes.

Her bags.

Everything.

On the kitchen counter was one envelope.

Malcolm picked it up.

Inside was a note.

He read it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The note was short.

“I know you won’t forgive me. But before you judge me, remember I did everything because I was afraid of losing my place in this family.””

I looked at Malcolm.

“She left?””

He nodded.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

“What do you mean she already cashed it?””

I looked at him.

“Cashed what?””

He covered the phone.

“The money from Isaiah’s account.””

My heart dropped.

“What money?””

Malcolm looked at the letter again.

Then at me.

“The money his mother left.””

The room went cold.

“But you said it was protected.””

“It was.””

“Then how?””

Malcolm listened to the person on the phone.

Then slowly sat down.

His voice barely came out.

“Dad…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He looked at the front door.

“Tasha didn’t just take the money.””

A pause.

“She took Isaiah’s identity documents too.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“Why?””

Malcolm looked terrified.

And then he said the one thing I never expected.

“Because she wasn’t trying to hide what she did.””

May you like

He looked at the empty doorway.

“She was trying to disappear before we found out who she really was.””
