Chapter 10: The Truth She Was Never Meant to Know

Nia stared at the photograph.

“Then who is Denise?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was so complete that she could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Darius stood near the doorway, breathing hard.

Marcus had one hand gripping his shoulder.

Tasha remained beside Nia.

Malik was still against the wall, one hand pressed to his ribs where Darius had shoved him.

And Evelyn was crying.

Nia looked at her mother.

“Tell me.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Nia…”

“Tell me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Nia's voice broke.

“You don't get to say that anymore.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“You're right.””

She looked at the photograph.

“Denise is your father's half-sister.””

Nia blinked.

“What?””

“Your father's mother had two children.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“My sister was born before I was.””

Nia looked at him.

“You never told me.””

“I thought she was dead.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“She wasn't.””

Marcus stared at her.

“How did you know?””

“Because she came to me.””

“When?””

“Three years after you disappeared.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“And you never told me.””

“I couldn't.””

Nia looked between them.

“Why?””

Evelyn pointed to the ledger.

“Because Denise wasn't just involved in your father's business.””

She swallowed.

“She was the one who found out where he was hiding.””

Nia's fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Denise betrayed Dad?””

“Yes.””

Marcus's voice was barely controlled.

“She sold my location.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She gave it to Samuel.””

Samuel flinched.

Marcus turned toward him.

“You said you found me by accident.””

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“I lied.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because Denise paid me.””

Nia's mouth fell open.

Darius suddenly laughed.

It was a broken, bitter sound.

“You really want to know everything?””

Nia turned toward him.

“Yes.””

“Then ask your father why Denise hated him.””

Marcus looked at Darius.

“Don't.””

Darius smiled.

“She didn't hate him.””

His eyes moved to Nia.

“She hated your mother.””

Evelyn went pale.

Nia looked at her.

“Why?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

“Because before I married your father…”

She stopped.

Marcus whispered, “Evelyn.””

But Nia stepped closer.

“Before you married Dad, what?””

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

“I was engaged to Denise's brother.””

Nia stared.

“Dad?””

“No.””

The room seemed to hold its breath.

Evelyn shook her head.

“Your father was not my first love.””

Marcus looked down.

Nia felt the ground shift beneath her again.

“Then who?””

Evelyn whispered the name.

“Richard Carter.””

Darius's eyes widened.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Nia looked at Darius.

Richard Carter.

The man everyone believed had died.

The man Marcus said had tried to kill him.

The man whose crimes were recorded in the ledger.

Evelyn continued.

“I was twenty-two. Richard was twenty-four. We were engaged.””

Darius's face hardened.

“My father never told me.””

“He wouldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because you weren't his biological son.””

Darius froze.

Nia's eyes widened.

Tasha whispered, “Oh my God.””

Darius shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your mother was already pregnant when she married Richard.””

Darius stared.

“You're lying.””

“I am not.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Darius, listen.””

“No!””

Darius shoved his hand away.

“You don't get to tell me who my father is.””

Evelyn's voice was soft.

“Richard knew.””

Darius shook his head.

“Stop.””

“He raised you anyway.””

“Stop!””

“But when he discovered that your biological father was Marcus—”

The room went silent.

Nia looked at Marcus.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Darius stared at him.

“No.””

Marcus whispered, “I'm sorry.””

Darius backed away.

“You?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother and I had a relationship before she married Richard.””

Darius's face twisted.

Nia couldn't speak.

Everything she thought she knew about the people around her was collapsing.

Darius looked at Denise's photograph.

“Then Denise…”

“Is your aunt,” Evelyn said.

“And Marcus…”

“Your biological father.””

Darius stared at Marcus.

“You knew?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not until recently.””

“How recently?””

“Three months ago.””

Darius laughed.

“You knew for three months and still let me marry Nia?””

“I didn't know you were involved.””

“You knew I was your son.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I wanted to verify it.””

Darius's laugh turned hollow.

“You abandoned me too.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I didn't know.””

“You always say that.””

Darius turned toward Nia.

“And you.””

Nia remained silent.

“You were my sister.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Darius looked confused.

“Then what?””

“You and Nia are not related.””

Marcus spoke.

“Darius's mother was pregnant with Darius before she married Richard.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Marcus wasn't his biological father.””

Darius stared.

“So why did you say—”

“Because Richard was not Darius's biological father either.””

Darius's face emptied.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your biological father was a man named Samuel Reed.””

Samuel closed his eyes.

Darius stopped breathing.

Nia looked at Samuel.

The pastor.

The attorney.

The man who had protected her.

The man who had betrayed her father.

Her father's former friend.

Darius's biological father.

Samuel opened his eyes.

“I never knew.””

Darius stared at him.

“You're my father?””

“Yes.””

Darius's knees almost buckled.

“No.””

Samuel's voice broke.

“I didn't know until after you were born.””

“Then why were you around?””

“Because your mother asked me to protect you.””

Darius laughed.

“Protect me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“You destroyed every family you touched.””

Samuel said nothing.

Darius looked at Nia.

“And you knew nothing.””

“No.””

For the first time, Darius's rage seemed to disappear.

What remained was a shattered man.

Nia looked down at the ledger.

“This is why you married me.””

Darius nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“To get the house.””

“Yes.””

“To get the ledger.””

“Yes.””

“And to get revenge on Marcus.””

“Yes.””

Nia closed her eyes.

All those years.

Every anniversary.

Every vacation.

Every kiss.

Every apology.

A lie.

She opened the ledger.

The pages were filled with dates and transactions.

Names.

Account numbers.

Payments.

At the back was one final entry.

Nia read it aloud.

“Payment to Samuel Reed.””

Samuel's face changed.

“How much?””

Nia told him.

His expression collapsed.

Marcus stepped closer.

“So that's why you betrayed me.””

Samuel nodded.

“I needed the money.””

“You sold my life.””

“I know.””

“You sold my daughter.””

Samuel looked at Nia.

“I thought I was buying time.””

Nia closed the ledger.

“You weren't.””

She looked at Darius.

“You were.””

Darius stared at her.

“You're right.””

The sirens began in the distance.

Everyone turned toward the windows.

Tasha looked at Nia.

“Did you call them?””

Nia shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Malik slowly raised his phone.

“I did.””

Darius looked at him.

“You called the police?””

Malik nodded.

“I sent them the recording.””

Darius stared.

“You're a traitor.””

Malik shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Nia.

“I was scared.””

Then at Darius.

“But I was more scared of becoming you.””

The police lights flashed across the walls.

Red.

Blue.

Red.

Blue.

Darius looked toward the front door.

Then at Nia.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Finally, he said, “I never meant for tonight to happen.””

Nia looked at him.

“You picked up the belt.””

His eyes lowered.

“You made your choice.””

Darius nodded.

“I did.””

The front door opened.

Officers entered.

Darius didn't run.

He simply held out his hands.

As they placed the cuffs around his wrists, Denise appeared at the doorway.

She looked at Nia.

“I am sorry.””

Nia stared at her.

“You should be.””

Denise nodded.

“I am.””

Then she looked at Marcus.

“I thought if I controlled the house, I could control what happened next.””

Marcus said nothing.

Denise's eyes filled.

“I was wrong.””

The officers led Darius outside.

Samuel followed.

Then Denise.

The living room slowly emptied.

Nia remained beside the overturned coffee table.

The belt still lay on the rug.

She looked at it.

Then picked it up.

She walked to the trash.

And dropped it inside.

The sound was small.

But final.

Marcus stood behind her.

“Nia.””

She turned.

He looked older than he had earlier.

Not like the mysterious man who had returned from the dead.

Just like her father.

The father she had lost.

The father she had found.

The father she didn't yet know how to forgive.

“I know I don't deserve it,” he said.

Nia nodded.

“No.””

“I don't expect you to forgive me tonight.””

“I can't.””

“I understand.””

She looked at him.

“But you came back.””

“Yes.””

“You could've stayed hidden.””

“Yes.””

“You didn't.””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“No.””

Nia stepped forward.

For a second, she hesitated.

Then she hugged him.

Marcus broke down.

He held her as though he were afraid she might disappear.

“I missed you,” he whispered.

Nia closed her eyes.

“I missed you too.””

Behind them, Tasha quietly stepped into the kitchen.

Malik helped Evelyn sit down.

The house was still damaged.

The coffee table was overturned.

The floor was scattered with broken ceramic.

But Nia no longer saw a prison.

She saw a place that had survived.

A place she could finally choose for herself.

Three days later, the trust was formally transferred into Nia's name.

The original deed confirmed it.

The house was hers.

Not Darius's.

Not Denise's.

Not Richard's.

Not Samuel's.

Hers.

Months later, Nia would renovate the living room.

She would replace the coffee table.

Repaint the walls.

Take down the wedding photograph.

But she kept one thing.

Her father's old notebook.

She placed it in a glass case beside a photograph of Marcus and herself.

Underneath, she wrote a single sentence:

*A family secret can steal years from you. The truth gives you the rest of your life back.*

And on the anniversary of the night Darius raised that belt, Nia stood alone in the same living room.

Sunlight poured through the windows.

Her braided bun was neat.

Her cream blouse was pressed.

Her hands were steady.

She looked at the empty space where she had once fallen to her knees.

Then she whispered the words she had needed to hear from herself all along.

“You will never touch me again.””

This time, there was no one standing over her.

No belt.

No laughter.

No fear.

May you like

Only silence.

And for the first time in years, the silence felt like freedom.
