Chapter 3: The Secret My Mother Kept
Tasha slammed the car door so hard the windows rattled.
“Tell me everything.””
Nia sat in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield.
The house stood behind them.
Darius was still visible through the upstairs window.
Watching.
Nia couldn't see Denise.
She couldn't see Malik.
Only Darius.
His silhouette remained perfectly still until Tasha pulled away from the curb.
Then the house disappeared behind a row of trees.
Tasha gripped the steering wheel.
“Start talking.””
Nia handed her the photograph of the document.
Tasha glanced at it at a red light.
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“Beneficial ownership transfer?””
“I found it under the door.””
“Why would Denise transfer the house?””
“I don't know.””
“And why did Darius say Mom was involved?””
“I don't know.””
Tasha looked at her.
“Did he say anything else?””
Nia hesitated.
“He told me to ask Mom.””
“Then we're going to Mom's.””
The light turned green.
Tasha accelerated.
Their mother lived twenty minutes away in a quiet neighborhood lined with magnolia trees.
By the time they arrived, Nia's adrenaline had faded enough for exhaustion to take its place.
She walked to the front door.
Tasha knocked.
Their mother opened it.
The moment she saw Nia, her expression collapsed.
“Oh, baby.””
Nia stepped into her arms.
Her mother's hands went immediately to her face, then her shoulders.
“Are you hurt?””
Nia closed her eyes.
“I'm okay.””
Her mother pulled back.
“No, you're not.””
Tasha shut the door behind them.
“Mom, we need to talk.””
Their mother looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nia stared at her.
“Why is Denise Carter on the paperwork for our house?””
Her mother went completely still.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Still.
Nia saw it.
That was the moment she knew.
“You knew.””
Her mother lowered her eyes.
“Nia…”
“You knew?””
Tasha stepped forward.
“Mom.””
Their mother walked to the dining table and sat down.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she folded her hands.
“I hoped you would never have to know.””
Nia felt something inside her break.
“You hoped?””
Her mother looked up.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From Darius.””
Nia laughed bitterly.
“You could have started with that.””
“I thought I was.””
“No.””
Nia's voice cracked.
“You let me spend seven years in that house believing it belonged to me and my husband.””
Her mother shook her head.
“It never belonged to Darius.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Her mother looked away.
“You helped us buy it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted you to have somewhere safe.””
Nia stared at her.
“Safe?””
Her mother flinched.
Tasha pulled out a chair.
“Mom, tell us the whole thing.””
Their mother took a slow breath.
“When Darius first came around, I didn't trust him.””
Nia frowned.
“You loved him.””
“I wanted to.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“No.””
Her mother's voice softened.
“It isn't.””
She reached toward Nia.
Nia didn't move.
“I saw how he treated you when he thought nobody was watching,” her mother continued.
“The little comments. The way he interrupted you. The way he checked your phone. The way he made every decision seem like it was his.””
Nia remembered.
The first time Darius had told her to change her dress before dinner.
The first time he had taken her car keys because she wanted to visit a friend.
The first time he had apologized for yelling by bringing flowers.
She had called those moments mistakes.
Her mother had called them warnings.
“I tried to talk to you,” her mother said.
“You told me I was lucky.””
“I told you that because I didn't want to push you away.””
“You did push me away.””
“I know.””
The room went quiet.
Nia looked at the paperwork again.
“Why was Denise's name involved?””
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Because Denise asked me to put the house in her name temporarily.””
Nia's head snapped up.
“Why would you agree to that?””
“Because she told me she could control Darius.””
Tasha shook her head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It didn't then either.””
Her mother reached for a glass of water.
“She told me Darius had debts.””
Nia stared.
“What kind of debts?””
“I don't know.””
“Mom.””
“I didn't know the details.””
“But you still helped.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her mother looked at her.
“Because I thought if the house was protected, you would always have a place to go.””
Nia's eyes filled.
“You should have told me.””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
Her mother couldn't answer.
Nia pushed back from the table.
“So what happened?””
Her mother swallowed.
“After you married him, Denise stopped answering my calls.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
“Then how did the house stay protected?””
“It didn't.””
Nia's chest tightened.
Her mother reached into a drawer and pulled out an old envelope.
“I received this three years ago.””
She placed it on the table.
Nia opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a legal document.
Her eyes moved down the page.
A transfer.
A signature.
Then another.
Nia's heart pounded.
“Whose signature is this?””
Her mother didn't answer.
Tasha leaned over the table.
“That's Denise's.””
Nia looked closer.
“No.””
Her mother whispered, “Look at the second signature.””
Nia's eyes moved down.
The second signature was unmistakable.
She knew it.
She had seen it thousands of times.
It belonged to Darius.
But beneath his signature was a date.
Three years ago.
And beside it was a handwritten note.
*Transfer approved upon confirmation of marriage dissolution.*
Nia frowned.
“What does this mean?””
Her mother looked terrified.
“It means Denise didn't transfer the house to Darius.””
Nia stared.
“Then who?””
Her mother's lips parted.
Before she could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Tasha stood.
“Are you expecting anyone?””
Their mother shook her head.
Another knock.
Nia looked at the clock.
8:47 p.m.
Nobody spoke.
Tasha moved toward the door.
“Don't,” Nia said.
Tasha stopped.
The knocking came again.
Then a woman's voice.
“Nia?””
Nia's blood ran cold.
She knew that voice.
Denise.
Tasha whispered, “How did she get here?””
Nia didn't answer.
Their mother stood abruptly.
“Don't open that door.””
Denise knocked again.
“Nia, I know you're in there.””
Nia looked at her mother.
“Why is she afraid of you?””
Their mother stared at the door.
“I told you I was trying to protect you.””
“What aren't you telling me?””
Denise's voice came through the door.
“I know what your mother did.””
Nia froze.
Denise continued.
“And if you don't come outside, Darius is going to find out too.””
Tasha grabbed Nia's arm.
“Don't go.””
Nia looked at the legal document on the table.
Then at her mother.
“Tell me the truth.””
Her mother began to cry.
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, there's no going back.””
Nia walked toward the door.
“There already isn't.””
Her hand closed around the doorknob.
Behind her, her mother whispered the one sentence Nia would spend the rest of the night trying to understand.
“Denise isn't the person who owns that house.””
Nia slowly turned.
“Then who is?””
May you like
Her mother looked directly at her.
And said a name Nia had not heard in more than twenty years.
