Chapter 8: The Paper That Changed Everything

Nobody moved.

Nia stared at the metal box.

“My birth certificate?””

Marcus nodded.

“Why would my birth certificate be in there?””

He looked at Evelyn.

She was crying silently.

Nia turned toward her.

“Mom?””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“Please.””

“Please what?””

“Let me explain.””

“Explain why my birth certificate is hidden in an attic?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

He nodded once.

She sat on an old wooden chair.

“You were born during the worst year of our lives.””

Nia's voice trembled.

“Who is my father?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Marcus answered.

“I am.””

Nia stared at him.

“Then why is my birth certificate hidden?””

“Because the original was altered.””

Tasha frowned.

“Altered how?””

Marcus opened the metal box.

Inside were documents sealed in plastic.

He removed the first one.

An old birth certificate.

Nia took it.

Her eyes scanned the page.

Mother: Evelyn Williams.

Father:

She stopped.

The father's name was not Marcus.

It was blank.

Nia's heart pounded.

“What?””

Marcus whispered, “There was no father's name on the first certificate.””

Nia looked up.

“Then why did you say you're my father?””

“Because I am.””

“Biologically?””

“Yes.””

“Then why wasn't your name there?””

“Because we couldn't put it there.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because the man hunting us would have found you.””

Nia's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Your father's attorney.””

Tasha shook her head.

“Wait. The attorney who helped Marcus disappear?””

“Yes.””

“What was his name?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Evelyn whispered it.

“Samuel Reed.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Nia knew the name.

She had seen it once on an old Christmas card.

A man her mother said was “a family friend.””

“You knew him.””

“Yes.””

“And he helped Dad disappear.””

“Yes.””

“What happened to him?””

Marcus looked toward the attic door.

“He betrayed me.””

Nia stared.

“How?””

“He took the original financial records.””

Tasha said, “And sold them?””

Marcus nodded.

“To Darius's father.””

Nia's stomach twisted.

“So the man who helped you disappear was working with the man who tried to kill you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you trust him?””

“I didn't know.””

Nia looked down at the birth certificate.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Samuel had access to your records.””

“What records?””

“Everything.””

Her school.

Your medical files.

Your Social Security records.

Your address.

Your photographs.

Nia's face hardened.

“You're telling me someone has been tracking me since childhood?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not someone.””

“Who?””

“Samuel.””

A floorboard creaked downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Tasha whispered, “We're not alone.””

Marcus motioned for them to stay quiet.

Footsteps moved through the hallway.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Nia gripped the birth certificate.

The attic door began to close.

Marcus reached it first.

He pulled it open.

Nobody stood outside.

Tasha looked over the railing.

“Kitchen.””

A shadow moved below.

Malik whispered, “It's Darius.””

Nia's stomach dropped.

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

“Nia—”

“I am done hiding.””

She moved down the stairs.

Darius stood in the kitchen.

His black shirt was still tucked in.

His face was bruised.

His eyes were fixed on the papers in Nia's hand.

“You found it.””

Nia stopped.

“What?””

“The certificate.””

Darius smiled.

“I knew you'd open the box.””

“How?””

“Because you're just like your father.””

Marcus appeared behind Nia.

Darius's smile disappeared.

“Dad.””

Marcus stared at him.

“You're not my son.””

Darius's face twisted.

“Don't say that.””

“You chose this.””

“You abandoned everyone.””

“I disappeared to protect Nia.””

“You disappeared because you were afraid.””

Marcus stepped forward.

Darius backed away.

“You don't get to come back after twenty years and pretend you're a hero.””

Nia interrupted.

“Who is Samuel Reed?””

Darius went silent.

That was enough.

Nia walked closer.

“Who is he?””

Darius looked at her.

“He's the reason your father stayed dead.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

Darius laughed.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Your father wasn't hiding from us.””

Darius pointed at Marcus.

“He was hiding from Samuel.””

Nia frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Samuel had something your father wanted.””

“What?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Darius's eyes moved to the birth certificate.

“Your real birth records.””

Nia felt sick.

“My records?””

“Your mother had a baby before she married Marcus.””

Evelyn appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

“Stop.””

Darius turned toward her.

“You should've told her.””

Nia looked at her mother.

“Is that true?””

Evelyn was shaking.

“Yes.””

Nia's world went silent.

“Who was the baby?””

Evelyn cried.

“You.””

Tasha stepped forward.

“Mom…”

“I was young,” Evelyn said.

“Your father and I weren't married yet.””

Nia stared.

“But you said Marcus was my father.””

“He is.””

“Then why did Darius say I was someone else's child?””

Darius smiled.

“Because your mother doesn't know the whole story.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Darius ignored him.

“Ask your father where he met Samuel.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

“Where?””

Marcus said nothing.

“Where?””

“At the hospital.””

Nia's chest tightened.

“What hospital?””

“The one where you were born.””

“And Samuel was there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because he was your mother's attorney.””

Nia stared at him.

“Why would an attorney be at my birth?””

Evelyn started crying harder.

Marcus looked at her.

Then finally said:

“Because your mother had been threatened before you were born.””

“By whom?””

Marcus's answer was barely audible.

“Darius's father.””

Darius laughed.

“You still don't get it.””

Nia turned toward him.

“Then explain it.””

Darius stepped closer.

“Your father wasn't the target.””

He pointed at Nia.

“You were.””

Silence.

Nia couldn't breathe.

Darius continued.

“Your mother had something they wanted.””

“What?””

“A ledger.””

“What ledger?””

“The one that proves where the stolen money went.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

He nodded.

“Your father hid it.””

“Where?””

Marcus looked at the metal box.

“It isn't in there.””

Darius smiled.

“No.””

He pulled out his phone.

“It never was.””

A photograph appeared on his screen.

It showed the inside of Nia's childhood bedroom.

A tiny wooden toy chest sat beneath the window.

Nia recognized it immediately.

She had kept that chest until she was eighteen.

Then it vanished.

“Where did you get that?””

Darius smiled.

“Samuel.””

Nia's blood ran cold.

“Where is he?””

Darius lowered the phone.

“You've met him.””

“No, I haven't.””

“Yes, you have.””

Darius leaned closer.

“Every time you've seen him, you thought he was someone else.””

Nia's heart raced.

“Who?””

Darius smiled.

“Your mother's pastor.””

Evelyn screamed.

“No!””

At that exact moment, headlights flooded the living room windows.

A car door slammed outside.

Then another.

Marcus moved toward the front door.

Darius backed away.

Tasha whispered, “Who is here?””

Darius looked at Nia.

“Ask him yourself.””

The front door opened.

An older Black man in a dark suit stepped inside.

Nia recognized him.

She had seen him at family funerals.

At birthdays.

At church.

Her mother's pastor.

He looked directly at Marcus.

Then at Nia.

May you like

And smiled.

“It's been a long time, sweetheart.””
