Chapter 7: The Truth Claire Left Behind
The doctor’s name was Dr. Adrian Bell.
The man who had treated Claire during the final months of her life.
The man who had sat beside me and told me there was nothing anyone could have done.
The man who held my shoulder at her funeral.
The man I thanked for trying to save my wife.
Now his name was circled in red.
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Lena watched me carefully.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He saved her.””
Lena looked down.
“Did he?””
The question hurt more than the answer.
I drove straight to the hospital.
Not because I expected him to confess.
Because I needed to see his face.
People could lie with words.
They couldn’t always lie with their eyes.
Dr. Bell was in his office when I arrived.
He looked surprised.
“Ethan?””
I closed the door behind me.
“We need to talk.””
He smiled politely.
“Of course.””
I placed the guest list on his desk.
The smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You know why I’m here.””
He leaned back.
“I assume you’ve had a difficult night.””
“Claire knew.””
His expression changed.
“Knew what?””
“That you were involved.””
He stared at me.
Then slowly stood.
“Ethan, grief can make people search for answers where there are none.””
I hated that sentence.
Everyone who betrayed me used the same trick.
Make me sound unstable.
Make me sound emotional.
Make me question myself.
I placed the flash drive on his desk.
“Claire left a recording.””
His face went completely still.
That was enough.
“You know what’s on it.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
He walked toward the window.
“Claire was sick.””
I followed him.
“Stop saying that.””
He turned.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Because it’s your excuse.””
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he sighed.
“She found out.””
“About you?””
“About everyone.””
My heart sank.
“Everyone?””
Dr. Bell sat down.
“She wasn’t supposed to know about the financial transfers.””
“You stole from us.””
“No.””
He looked angry.
“Grant stole.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Grant manipulated everyone.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says someone else did it.””
“Because everyone had a role.””
The room felt smaller.
I stared at him.
“Tell me the truth.””
He looked at the flash drive.
Then said quietly:
“Claire wasn’t killed because she discovered the money.””
My stomach turned.
“Then why?””
He looked directly at me.
“Because she discovered what they planned to do to your daughters.””
Everything went cold.
I stepped closer.
“What?””
Dr. Bell swallowed.
“Claire found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Custody documents.””
The word hit me.
“No.””
“She realized Vanessa and Grant were preparing to remove you from control of the estate.””
I stared.
“They wanted my daughters?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked away.
“Because of Claire’s inheritance.””
I felt sick.
My daughters weren’t people to them.
They were obstacles.
Assets.
A future payout.
I picked up the flash drive.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His silence answered before he did.
“Because they threatened my family.””
I stared.
“You helped them.””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“And I’ve hated myself every day since.””
The confession didn’t make me forgive him.
It made me understand how deep the betrayal went.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an excuse.
But my daughters still sat hungry in that room.
I left the office with one question.
Who actually killed Claire?
Before I reached my car, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time I answered.
A recording played.
Claire’s voice.
“Ethan.””
I stopped walking.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
My eyes filled.
She continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then they know you found the truth.””
A pause.
Then Claire whispered:
“But there is one person I never told you about.””
I held my breath.
“The person who started all of this…”
The recording crackled.
May you like
Then her final words came through.
“The person is inside your house right now.””
