Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Door

I drove home faster than I ever had.

The entire way, one thought repeated.

Inside your house.

Not was.

Is.

Claire had recorded that message before she died.

Meaning she knew someone was still there.

Someone close.

Someone with access.

Someone who could hurt my daughters.

When I arrived, the house looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Christmas lights blinked along the roof.

Snow covered the driveway.

A stranger passing by would have thought it was perfect.

They would never know what happened inside.

I entered quietly.

The ballroom was empty.

The decorations were still there.

The abandoned champagne glasses remained on tables.

A frozen celebration.

I heard voices upstairs.

I moved toward them.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then I stopped.

Vanessa.

She was in my daughters’ room.

Holding a box.

I pushed the door open.

She turned.

“Ethan.””

“What are you doing?””

Her face changed.

“I was packing.””

“Why?””

She looked at the girls’ toys.

“I’m leaving.””

I laughed once.

“After everything?””

She flinched.

“I didn’t do everything.””

“You helped.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission surprised me.

She placed the box down.

“I helped.””

I waited.

She looked exhausted.

“I thought Claire was trying to take everything away.””

“Everything?””

“You.””

I stared.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She told me she had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Grant was stealing.””

I frowned.

“Then why help him?””

“Because he lied.””

Her voice cracked.

“He told me Claire was going to leave me with nothing. He told me you would hate me if you knew.””

I shook my head.

“You hurt my daughters.””

She cried.

“I know.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t.””

She covered her face.

“I know what I did.””

The room went quiet.

Then she reached into the box.

And pulled out a notebook.

“I found this after Claire died.””

I took it.

“What is it?””

“Her journal.””

My hands froze.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because Grant told me not to.””

I opened the notebook.

The first pages were normal.

Shopping lists.

Notes about the girls.

Memories.

Then the final entries changed.

Claire had written about fear.

About watching people around her.

About realizing the danger wasn’t outside the family.

It was inside.

One line made my heart stop.

Grant is not acting alone.

I kept reading.

The next page was torn.

Again.

Someone had removed the most important part.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who tore this?””

She whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Then the lights went out.

The whole house went dark.

Vanessa gasped.

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

I grabbed her arm.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

She looked terrified.

“I know that sound.””

“What sound?””

She whispered:

“The basement.””

My blood froze.

The basement.

The place nobody entered.

The place Claire had always kept locked.

I moved downstairs.

The basement door was open.

Slowly swinging.

Inside was darkness.

Then I heard it.

A child crying.

My heart stopped.

I ran down.

But the room was empty.

Except for one thing.

A small recording device sitting on the floor.

I picked it up.

Pressed play.

Claire’s voice filled the basement.

“If you found this…”

She sounded scared.

“Then I failed to protect you.””

A pause.

“But there is something you need to know about your daughters.””

The recording stopped.

A second later, a new voice played.

Not Claire.

Someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone standing behind me.

“You really should have listened to her.””

I turned.

And saw Rachel.

May you like

My attorney.

Holding the missing journal pages.
