Chapter 9: Claire’s Final Message
I couldn’t speak.
Rachel stood at the basement entrance.
The woman who had helped me uncover everything.
The woman who had guided me through the lies.
The woman who now held the missing pieces of Claire’s journal.
“Rachel.””
She looked devastated.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Just tired.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I stared at the pages in her hand.
“How long?””
She closed her eyes.
“Since before Claire died.””
The words felt impossible.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
Rachel walked down the stairs.
“I know.””
She placed the pages on the table.
“But this time it’s true.””
I picked them up.
Claire’s handwriting covered the paper.
Ethan,
If Rachel gives you this, it means she finally decided you were ready.
I looked at Rachel.
“Ready for what?””
She didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
The truth is, I wasn’t just investigating Grant.
I was investigating Rachel.
My hands stopped.
I looked up.
“What?””
Rachel looked away.
“I was the one Claire contacted first.””
The room went silent.
“She suspected everyone.””
“Why you?””
“Because I handled the legal documents.””
She swallowed.
“She needed someone outside the family.””
I looked back at the pages.
Claire continued:
Rachel was not involved in the theft. But she made a mistake. A dangerous one.
I looked at Rachel.
“What mistake?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
The basement felt colder.
“Who?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Claire’s doctor.””
I froze.
“Dr. Bell?””
“Yes.””
“But he said—”
“He lied.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“He changed Claire’s medical records.””
The world tilted.
“What?””
“He made it appear Claire was mentally unstable.””
My jaw tightened.
“So they could say she was confused.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the pages again.
Claire’s final entry was short.
But it destroyed me.
If they convince Ethan I was sick, they will take the girls.
I closed my eyes.
The entire plan became clear.
The lies.
The recordings.
The manipulation.
They weren’t trying to hurt my family.
They were trying to erase Claire.
Rachel touched the table.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Claire knew she was in danger.””
I whispered:
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she leave?””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Because she was afraid they would follow her.””
My eyes burned.
“She stayed for the girls.””
Rachel nodded.
“She hid evidence everywhere.””
I looked at the recording device.
“Why this basement?””
“Because nobody knew about it.””
A noise suddenly came from upstairs.
A crash.
Rachel looked toward the stairs.
“What was that?””
I didn’t answer.
I ran.
We reached the first floor.
The front door was open.
Cold air rushed inside.
And standing in the snow outside was Grant.
But he wasn’t alone.
Beside him was Dr. Bell.
Grant smiled.
“You finally figured it out.””
I stared at them.
Two men who had destroyed my family.
Dr. Bell looked at Rachel.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She needs to hear this.””
Grant laughed.
“Who?””
Rachel pointed behind me.
I turned.
Vanessa stood there.
Holding her phone.
Recording everything.
Grant’s smile disappeared.
Because he realized something.
For the first time, everyone was telling the truth.
May you like
And then Vanessa said the words nobody expected.
“I know who killed Claire.””
