Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Door

The door opened slowly.

Every instinct in my body told me to protect my family.

But I couldn’t move.

Because Caroline looked like she had seen a ghost.

A woman stepped out of the hidden room.

She was older.

Maybe in her late fifties.

Her face was pale.

Her clothes were dirty.

But the strangest thing was her eyes.

They looked exactly like Caroline’s.

“Who are you?”” I demanded.

The woman stared at me.

Then she looked at Emma.

“Ryan.””

I froze.

Nobody had introduced me.

“How do you know my name?””

The woman looked at Caroline.

“You never told him?””

Caroline stepped between us.

“Enough.””

The woman laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“You still protect them.””

“Don’t.””

“After everything they did?””

I looked at Caroline.

“Who is she?””

The woman answered.

“I’m Caroline’s mother.””

My wife closed her eyes.

“No.””

The woman looked at me.

“My name is Diane.””

I had heard that name before.

Once.

Years ago.

During one of Caroline’s nightmares.

She had woken up screaming.

I asked her who Diane was.

She said:

“Nobody.””

Now nobody was standing inside my daughter’s bedroom wall.

“You told me your parents were dead,” I said.

Caroline whispered:

“They should be.””

Diane’s face hardened.

“Your wife has been lying to you.””

I looked at Caroline.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

That hurt more than if she had said yes.

Diane stepped forward.

“Ryan, you need to know why Emma is here.””

Emma moved behind me.

Diane looked at her.

“She was never supposed to survive.””

My stomach turned.

“What are you saying?””

Caroline finally spoke.

“Mom wanted to erase everything.””

“Because your sister was going to expose us.””

I stared at Caroline.

“Expose what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Diane said:

“The truth about Lily.””

My daughter looked up.

“What about me?””

Caroline immediately grabbed her.

“Don’t listen.””

But I already knew.

There was something bigger.

Something my wife had been hiding.

Diane reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this years ago.””

She handed it to me.

The paper was old.

A medical document.

I read the first line.

Then I stopped.

Because the name on it was mine.

Ryan Carter.

I looked at Caroline.

“What is this?””

Her face collapsed.

“Ryan…”

The paper shook in my hands.

It wasn’t a birth certificate.

It wasn’t a medical record.

It was a DNA test.

And at the bottom was a result I never expected.

Emma wasn’t connected to me.

May you like

But Lily was.

And not the way I thought.
