Chapter 4: The Truth My Wife Buried

I didn’t sleep that night.

Nobody did.

We moved to the living room while Diane sat silently across from us.

Emma stayed close to Lily.

Like they had been sisters for years.

Finally, I looked at Caroline.

“Tell me everything.””

She cried.

Not the kind of crying people do when they’re caught.

The kind people do when they’ve been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“When I met you, I already knew about Emma.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“My sister disappeared before we met.””

“Your sister?””

Caroline nodded.

“Her name was Rachel.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Diane spoke.

“Rachel was Emma’s mother.””

I looked at Emma.

The little girl was staring at the floor.

“She was trying to escape my family,” Caroline continued.

“Why?””

“Because my parents were dangerous.””

The room went quiet.

Caroline explained everything.

Her parents had controlled their family for years.

They controlled money.

Secrets.

People.

When Rachel discovered what they had done, she tried to expose them.

Then she vanished.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

Caroline looked at Emma.

“Because I thought I was too late.””

Diane interrupted.

“She wasn’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Diane’s voice cracked.

“Rachel left evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Diane pointed toward the hidden room.

“There.””

We followed her through the passage.

Behind the locked door was a small room.

Not a bedroom.

A storage room.

Boxes covered the floor.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

A life hidden behind drywall.

I opened one box.

Inside were dozens of pictures.

My wife.

Her sister.

Their parents.

And one more person.

Me.

I dropped the photograph.

“What is this?””

Caroline looked.

Her face turned white.

“That’s impossible.””

The picture showed me standing beside Rachel.

Years before I met Caroline.

I didn’t remember.

I didn’t recognize the place.

But the man in the picture was me.

Diane whispered:

“Rachel knew you before Caroline did.””

My heart raced.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Caroline.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“Not until recently.””

“Recently?””

She looked away.

“I found the pictures six months ago.””

My anger exploded.

“Six months?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You lied to me!””

My voice made Lily jump.

I immediately softened.

But the damage was done.

Then Emma spoke.

“She said you forgot.””

I turned.

“Who?””

Emma touched the photograph.

“Mommy Rachel.””

The room went silent.

“She said you forgot because they made you forget.””

I felt the world shift.

“What does that mean?””

Before Emma answered, Diane grabbed another folder.

Inside was a letter.

She handed it to me.

The handwriting looked familiar.

I read the first sentence.

“Ryan, if you are reading this, it means Caroline finally trusted you enough to show you the truth.””

My hands trembled.

The letter was signed.

Rachel.

May you like

And the final line made my blood run cold.

“Your daughter Lily was never supposed to be raised by Caroline.””
