The Girl Behind the Wall / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Daughter I Never Knew

I read the letter three times.

The words didn’t change.

Your daughter Lily was never supposed to be raised by Caroline.

I looked at my little girl.

She was sitting beside Emma, holding her hand.

My daughter.

The child I had raised.

The child I loved more than anything.

“Caroline.””

My wife couldn’t look at me.

“Tell me.””

She wiped her tears.

“Lily’s mother was Rachel.””

The room stopped.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“You’re saying Lily isn’t yours?””

Caroline shook her head.

“She’s yours.””

That was somehow worse.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Caroline whispered:

“You and Rachel had a daughter.””

My knees felt weak.

The memories came back like broken pieces.

A young woman.

A hospital.

A promise.

Then years of emptiness.

I had always believed those memories were dreams.

But they weren’t.

Someone had taken them from me.

“Why don’t I remember?””

Diane answered.

“Because my husband made sure you didn’t.””

I looked at her.

“Your husband?””

“My father.””

The room went silent.

Diane’s voice became softer.

“They found out Rachel was leaving. They knew she was taking Emma and Lily away.””

“Then what happened?””

Diane looked at Caroline.

“Caroline tried to save them.””

My wife cried.

“I was nineteen.””

“You were scared.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

She looked at me.

“When Rachel disappeared, I searched for years.””

“And Lily?””

“She was hidden.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Where?””

Caroline pointed toward the walls.

“In this house.””

I looked around.

The home where I had made breakfast.

Watched movies.

Celebrated birthdays.

There had been secrets everywhere.

Then Emma walked toward me.

She held something in her hand.

A small necklace.

“I was supposed to give this to you.””

I looked at it.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Rachel wore that necklace the last time I saw her.

“How do you have this?””

Emma looked at me sadly.

“Mommy Rachel said you would know.””

I took the necklace.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

Me.

Rachel.

And two babies.

One was Emma.

The other was Lily.

I felt tears fall before I even realized I was crying.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Caroline whispered:

“Don’t answer.””

But I already knew.

Whoever was calling knew.

They knew I found the room.

They knew I found Emma.

I pressed accept.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Ryan.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Even though I hadn’t heard it in years.

The voice of the man everyone told me was dead.

My father-in-law.

Diane’s husband.

And his next words changed everything.

“You finally found the children.””

A pause.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“But you still haven’t found Rachel.””
