Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Adoption
I didn’t show Maya the message.
Not immediately.
That was my first mistake.
Because I was repeating the same pattern everyone else had created.
Holding information back.
Choosing when someone was ready.
Deciding what they could survive.
But in that moment, standing in a graduation courtyard surrounded by strangers, I didn’t know how to drop another piece of broken glass into Maya’s hands.
Victor pulled me aside.
“Who sent that?””
I showed him the screen.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know this number?””
I whispered.
“Victor.””
He looked away.
That was the moment my stomach dropped.
“You do know.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Renee, not here.””
“Not here?””
My voice shook.
“We have spent years saying we were protecting her. But everyone knew something except Maya.””
He looked toward Maya.
She was still talking with Claire and Ethan.
Still searching for answers.
Still unaware there was another secret waiting.
“I was going to tell her.””
“When?””
Victor didn’t answer.
“After college?””
Silence.
“After she got married?””
Silence.
“After she had kids?””
He closed his eyes.
And I knew.
He never had a plan.
He only had another delay.
“Who sent this?”” I asked.
Victor swallowed.
“Someone who knows what happened.””
“Who?””
Before he could answer, Maya walked back.
Her eyes were red.
But her expression was different.
Stronger.
“I want to know everything.””
Victor straightened.
“Maya—”
“No.””
She looked at him.
“No more.””
The firmness in her voice reminded me of the little girl who once stood in front of a teacher and defended a classmate being bullied.
She had always been brave.
We just never gave her the truth to be brave about.
“What does that message mean?”” she asked.
My heart stopped.
She had seen it.
I looked at my phone.
“How?””
“You left it unlocked.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
No more secrets.
Not today.
Victor stepped forward.
“Maya, there are things you need to understand.””
She laughed softly.
“That sentence is becoming my least favorite sentence.””
Claire looked between us.
“What message?””
Nobody answered.
Maya looked at Ethan.
“Did you know?””
Ethan’s face changed.
That was enough.
“You knew too?””
“Maya—”
“Everyone knew.””
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone knew my life except me.””
I reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
Not angrily.
Just hurt.
That hurt worse.
Victor sat down.
For the first time, he looked like a man preparing to confess.
“When your biological parents separated, there were legal issues.””
Maya listened.
“Your mother wanted you safe.””
“Safe from what?””
Victor looked at Ethan.
Ethan looked down.
Then Victor said:
“From your father.””
The courtyard disappeared.
Maya stared.
“What?””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“That’s not the whole truth.””
Victor continued.
“You were seven years old. Your mother believed Ethan was unstable.””
Maya looked at Ethan.
“Is that true?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Victor’s voice became firmer.
“She had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Nobody answered.
Maya’s eyes moved between them.
“Show me.””
Victor hesitated.
“Maya.””
“Show me.””
He finally opened his phone.
He searched for something.
Then handed it to her.
I watched Maya read.
Her expression changed.
At first, confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then pain.
“What is this?””
Victor didn’t answer.
She looked up.
“These are police reports.””
“Yes.””
“Against him?””
“Yes.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Maya, listen to me.””
She backed away.
“No.””
“Maya.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You all made me believe you protected me from sadness.””
She looked at the documents.
“But you were protecting me from the truth.””
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
She laughed.
“You disappeared.””
“I was trying to fix things.””
“You left.””
“I thought I had no choice.””
Maya turned away.
I saw her trying not to cry.
The same way I had done earlier.
The same way we both had learned.
Hide the pain.
Keep standing.
Claire walked closer.
“Maya, there’s something else.””
Maya looked at her.
“What?””
Claire hesitated.
And I knew before she spoke.
Another secret.
“There was a reason Victor was able to adopt you so quickly.””
Maya frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Claire looked at Victor.
He looked devastated.
“Maya…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Say it.””
Victor’s voice was barely audible.
“Your adoption wasn’t supposed to happen.””
Everyone went silent.
Maya stared.
“What?””
Victor looked at me.
Then at her.
“I wasn’t the first person chosen.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you saying?””
He looked down.
“Someone else was supposed to adopt you.””
Maya whispered:
“Who?””
Victor’s phone suddenly rang.
Again.
He looked at the screen.
This time, he didn’t hide it.
The name was visible.
A name Maya had never heard before.
A name that made Claire cover her mouth.
A name that made Ethan take a step back.
Maya looked at the phone.
“Who is that?””
Victor didn’t answer.
May you like
Because whoever was calling…
was the person who knew the entire truth about Maya’s adoption.
